Honouring those before. My practice is one of nature and old Tradition, using the folk magic of my native land, Ireland and the beliefs and workings of the Celts to help me find the path that feels most aligned to me.

Beyond the Hedge. I work and connect with beings of nature, from Plant Spirits to Aos Sí, Sacred animals to Ancestors. For we humans are part of and become even more intertwined with the land after we give up our mortal bodies.

The Fire and the Flame. I call in many of my Celtic Deities but the one that is most connected to my heart is that of Brighid. She is my patron Goddess and the one who inspires and protects me.

The Weaving of Fate. Part of my practice is divination. I use the cards, cast charms and scry to help guide myself on this path of life.

Balancing the elemental. As my practice is very nature and land-based. Working with the genius loci in all their elemental forms. Earth. Air. Water. Is very important within my craft.

Off the Path. When I am not practising my craft, I enjoy reading many books, mainly about fantasy worlds inspired by faeries, folktales and faerytales. I, too, enjoy crafting my own tales inspired by all that intrigues and excites me. I like to let my mind become free of thoughts by playing cosy video games, mainly ones that are story-driven or filled with cute and magical creatures. Gardening and helping to nurture seeds to new growth that benefits the local wildlife and me as well is another hobby that I enjoy. But the truth is that mundane is magical to me, so I never really feel that I am not being a "witch".

As this is my personal witchcraft blog, anything I write is a reflection of my personal practice and experiences. I am not trying to speak for other practitioners or their experiences. Just as snowflakes are all unique, our practices and paths can never be compared as exactly alike.

I like to think of myself as a kind person, but kindness does not imply weakeness so let it be know that I will not put up with rude or cruel behaviour towards me or another upon my blog or posts. Emma Kisiel holds a bachelor of fine arts with an emphasis in photography from the University of Colorado Denver. “At Rest” is a photographic series depicting roadkill on American highways and addressing our human fear of confronting death and viewing the dead. Kisiel’s images draw attention to the fact that, while man has a vast impact on animal and natural life, dominant American religions insist that animals do not have a place in Heaven and are, therefore, of little value in our society. To cause the viewer to feel struck by this truth, Kisiel photographs memorials she builds surrounding roadkill at the location at which its life was taken. “At Rest” expresses the sacredness to the bodies of animals accidentally hit by vehicles while crossing the road.

Protective Magic As an Act of Care

It isn't a common sentiment I've encountered, but over the years I've seen a handful of people say they don't bother with protection magic, wards, etc because they're "not scared". I've been thinking about this a bit lately because I've never viewed protective magic as something that stems from fear. For me, it's always been about care.

In some ways, it's like locking my door. I don't lock it because I'm scared someone is going to come through. I lock it because it means I don't need to worry because I know it's taken care of, and my home is protected. I value the peace inside my own. It's the same with preparing protective oils and herbs, maintaining wards, and every other little act of protective magic to make sure my house feels settled. The focus isn't on some looming threat that's hanging over me. It's on the belief that my home is a sacred place that deserves peace and protection.

To me, protective magic grows from affection, stewardship, and believing that the things you tend deserve a chance to thrive without unnecessary interference.

A house warming gift for my sister @itsbrigidbooks <3 <3 <3 We're collabing on a series of Kitchen Witches for the family with hers based off of St. Brigid/ Celtic Goddess Brigid., but she didn't know I was making one for her 😘😘

I'm trying to paint more to give myself a break from all the digital artwork I do all day with storyboarding, so this was a good challenge. Sketch was digital and then I printed it to do a graphite trace onto the wooden panel (from Michaels, sanded down the rough edges and used a transparent gesso first), but also did a digital color pass first to give me a clear path. Painted with acrylics and kept the sketch taped to the back to trace the small details back on later.

Further WIP stages. If anyone has secret tips on how to make acrylic paint smoother please let me know lol though that doesn't seem to really be the point of the medium BUT its all I feel comfortable with right now.

This weekend I'm finally building a three-bin composting structure, our current compost pile setup just isn't keeping up. In permaculture, composting is called "closing the loop". Making use of the garden outputs that would be left to rot for garden inputs. This is one of the magical circles enclosing a garden, life and death.

I am always enamored with how much making and maintaining a garden incorporates the most macabre and violent aspects of existence. Gardening is superficially represented with sunshine, the beauty of greenery, the glistening of tomatoes, springtime, youth, flowers.

But it is equally brutal and unforgiving, much of the time with the gardener acting as the reaper and the devil/transformer. Destroying swaths of innocent "weeds", mass murdering voles, slugs and snails with malice in our hearts. Pruning living limbs from tree and plant to shape them to our need.

The magic comes when you take all that carnage, put it into a pile, and transform death into life-giving substance, building the bridge for the next go-around.

Why does every damn spell jar have to be buried?

"Bury it outside your front door" I LIVE IN AN APARTMENT, I CAN'T DO THAT!

"Use a potted plant." I am not buying a potted plant that I know I will not be able to keep alive just to bury a spell jar.

I will reuse the jar + components after giving 'em a good smoke and water cleansing, or, if I can't/don't want to, just dispose of everything properly.

I think the practice of burying jars and other such objects is from a time way back when pollution and over-consumption wasn't as much of an issue as it is now. The modern witch (and everyone else too tbh) should be mindful of our ecological footprint

This is why I'm in favour of using old toilet-roll holders to create a sort of spell jar/sachet instead of glass, not that I do that kind of working much, but as long as it's all natural ingredients taken from nature, it'll all decompose instead of glass, which also can break under the ground and in a few years may come to the surface again and hurt an animal's paw if they walk over it so I would never use glass in anything I wish to bury.

Hi!!

I don't really do "prayers", so I wouldn't know what prayers you should do but as Beltaine is a fire festival honouring the fertility of the land, abundance of all you have and wish to have, as well as blocking any curses/malevolent spirits, you can use any of those to form a prayer for yourself.
