I was going to rant about how the magic system fits into the larger cosmology and *then* explain how that results in that combo of words, but I decided that I'll just do that for another post. How the magic system works in this world (called the "First Cradle") is that it is a bunch of strings. The very formation of the world is born from whether all these strings are woven together, how tight the weave is, what shapes it makes, how the strings resonate with each other, what memories or principles are encoded within the strings, and so on. These strings stretch across a seven-dimensional space in order to hold up the three-dimensional world, and they manage to uphold 3 dimensions of space to near perfection, but things start to get rocky after that. If things stretch out into other dimensions, the structure of the world gets unstable, and the more dimensions a thing reaches into, the less the very fabric of their existence likes to stay together. There are a good few creatures that have at lest some thickness into a fourth dimension in order to better manipulate the strings to use magic (mostly dragons), but certain kinds of fairies have even more complicated of structure. A certain type of fairy has a plant form and avatar (humanoid or beastly) that appear to be completely independent. This is because these creatures have these parts of their bodies connected in higher dimensions, and different ones vary on how many dimensions they take up- the largest ones stretch through six different dimensions of space. Another note is that all fairies in this world have magic in their DNA, literally. The way their cells replicate is through not only physical DNA, but a connected, magical equivalent. These fairies are made to survive as much as possible and are nearly impossible to kill, except by a fatal flaw in their very design: their dimensionality. Reality is barely able to accommodate a 6-dimensional form. Other problems berate these higher-dimensional beings than just sticking together. The dimensions are also given names by how clustered they are with strings (to help visualize: if you go in a certain direction, there's gonna be a lot of strings), and these more clustered regions/dimensions *radiate*, magically. This radiation will, of course, cause damage to the magical integrity of these beings. These fairies not only struggle to even have their form because of how hard it is to assemble the strings in the right arrangement, they're also fragile due to extreme magic radiation. The main causes of death among these plant fairies are the risk of entanglement with their own strings, damage to their "magic DNA", or decay from the unstable and radiating environment.
I'm not sure if I explained it well enough; it's been a while since I thought about it much. If anyone has questions, wishes to add their own two cents, or wants to point out flawed logic, feel free. I may have misremembered some of my worldbuilding, so thinking about it would help resolidify the concepts. Plus, I might just steal some people's ideas.
