It had almost been 2 weeks since the world ended, and if anyone had told (Y/N) that the end of the world would include human-eating monsters, she would have valued her sleeping time more dearly.
She groggily sat up from her make shift bed, stretching her arms as she let out a grunt at the sound of her back popping.
She had only gotten a few hours of sleep in, which was normal in this new, horrible world they’re living in. Though, she dearly wished she was in her own, comfy bed with her big fluffy blankets and soft pillows.
If not, anything would be better than the hard ground.
She sighed, slowly getting up and making her way towards a large figure who had taken a seat a good distance from the apartment gate.
Wook had an intense look on his face as he stared outside, eyes scanning for some sort of movement that would catch his attention. However, it was soon broken as he took notice of the young girl making his way.
“Hey.” He whispered, making (Y/N) give him a tired smile as she grabbed her fire axe, a weapon she stole from the fire emergency box.
Wook had scooted over, making the (H/C) girl take a seat next to him.
(Y/N) had let out a loud yawn, attempting to mask it with her hand. Wook looked at her from the corner of his eyes, an eyebrow raised.
“Are you going to be okay being by yourself?” He asked, gesturing to her obvious exhaustion.
(Y/N) playfully rolled her eyes. “Yes Wook, I’ll be fine.” She reassured, getting her self more situated. “I just need more time to wake up.”
“Whatever you say.” The man mumbled, finally getting up from his spot. “Remember, after your time is up you need to wake up Hyun.” He reminded, causing (Y/N) to hum and nod her head.
As Wook walked away to his own bed, (Y/N) had propped up her arm onto her knee, holding her head in the palm of her hand as her mind began to wander. Which ultimately led to Hyun, a very lanky and sad-looking boy she had actually befriended before the apocalypse.
If you looked at the two side by side, you never would have thought such a well-built, athletic high school girl would be friends with such a shy, quiet boy. Both looked like the personifications of your typical jock and emo, which had a lot of people questioning their relationship towards each other.
Despite their different appearances and opposite interests, they were best friends. Nothing could separate them, and this apocalypse only seemed to strengthen their relationship.
1 year before the apocalypse.
Hyun was beginning to run out of hiding spaces. It seems like no matter where he went, he was always being harassed, which soon escalated to bullying by that damn psychopath.
It almost seemed like he had eyes all over the school. Even in the most ridiculous places to hide, he was never truly safe from the abuse. Which led him here, to the school’s track. Finding a spot behind the bleachers, he managed to escape a few close calls during lunch and after school hours. There, he waited until it was time for class or his mother was finally able to pick him and his sister up.
Though, despite the circumstances, there WAS a positive side to hiding under the bleachers.
She was a girl in his grade, but not just any girl, a very popular one.
She was nice, and not just the “fake” nice that most people use to put on a front, but she was genuinely nice. She never looked at people with judgement like most people do, and she was never concerned with popularity in the first place. Her good looks and her talent at sports and athletic activities just so happened to make her popular.
Hyun had only ever talked to her a few times before his bullying had started, but there was something about her that made her stand out from the other girls.
He felt a bit creepy just watching her from afar, but he couldn’t help it. He longed to talk to her again, but didn’t want to risk seeing the look of disgust or uncomfortableness on her face once he approached her. So, he opted to just observing. Silently cheering her on as she ran past her other opponents on the track, or even pulling off a flawless jump as she vaulted herself through the air.
He watched in awe as she lifted up her best friend onto her shoulders in a moment of pure happiness, making the action look easy as her teammates cheered loudly.
A wide smile etched onto her face as she looked at her friend proudly due to their win. Despite not being part of the celebration, Hyun felt close enough to be part of it, causing his own lips to stretch into a small smile.
“Looks like we found him boys.”
Hyun’s blood ran cold, not daring to turn around and face what is awaiting for him. He was finally found, and now he would have to continue running until he found the next hiding spot to hide away in.
“What’s wrong? Aren’t you going to turn around, asshole?” The voice sneered, causing Hyun to tense.
“What are you even looking at you fucking weirdo?” Another insulted, shoving him away from his spot and peering through the seats.
There, the group of boys watched as (Y/N) smiled and waved at her teammates, jogging over to a fountain as she filled up her water bottle. The boys watched her figure with intense gazes, finally understanding what Hyun was looking at.
“Damn, I guess all losers are just big perverts huh?” The ring leader joked, joining his friends to watch the view. He hummed in approval, glancing at Hyun. “Gotta hand it to ya though, you got good taste.”
Hyun looked down, avoiding his gaze as he shook his head. “It’s not like that...” He muttered, a frugal attempt at sounding unbothered.
“Oh really? Well let’s see here...” his bully began, walking towards Hyun. “We’ve been looking for you this entire time, here you are; hiding under the bleachers like a pussy and staring at (L/N) like she’s a damn pornstar. What, have you been jerking yourself off too while you were hiding?” he finished, roughly pushing Hyun to the ground.
Upon impact, Hyun quickly shielded himself as he prepared for the worse. Once he had, touched the ground, the abuse had started.
Punches, kicks, the names, anything that these boys could do to harm and humiliate him, they did it all to see him suffer. He wished the ground could swallow him whole, and relieve him from the pain he endures just for his family’s own happiness.
“OW!!” A boy bowled in pain, a (F/C) water bottle falling to the floor beside him.
Turning around, the boys were met with furious (E/C) eyes. Their gaze so heated, they would have combusted just from the fire that was held within them. “THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING!?” The girl yelled in anger, causing Hyun to open his eyes.
Hyun was shocked to see that it was not just any girl, but (Y/N) (L/N). His eyes widened as he watched her run towards them, roughly push them away, and kneel right in front of him. Eyes filled with worry as she steadily helped him to her feet, taking great care not to handle him so roughly.
Quickly, she turned to glare at the boys. “What is your problem!? Leave him alone! Hasn’t he had enough of your crap?” She argued, causing the group of boys to look shocked themselves, before looking at their ring leader, almost in fear of what will happen next.
Though, he showed no emotion, just a smirk as he got closer to (Y/N). “Listen sweetheart, I don’t want to hurt that pretty little face of yours.” He began, “Forget this ever happened, and MAYBE I’ll let you off with a w-“
Before he could finish, (Y/N) had pulled back her arm, and punched him hard in the jaw. The moment her fist had made contact with his jaw, a loud, sickening crack could be heard as the boy was sent to the ground. He cried out, holding his jaw in pain as he looked at the (H/C) girl with wide, shocked eyes.
“You crazy bitch!” He slurred, “I think you broke my jaw!”
“Good.” She answered, glaring coldly at the ring leader before quickly setting her gaze on the rest of the boys, who flinched at the intense look in her eyes.
“I know how to break your arms in three different ways, fuck off and leave or I shove your arm so far up your ass you’ll be coughing up finger nails.” She threatened, but when the boys could only stare at her in shock, she had let out an exasperated sigh. Quickly getting into a proper fighting stance, the boys jumped from the sudden action, dragging their ring leader as he attempted to curse (Y/N) with his broken jaw.
(Y/N) didn’t like to fight, or even become violent for that matter, but in this moment she couldn’t help the small tug at the corner of her lips as it formed into a smirk. She turned around, her gaze making Hyun flinch as he looked down, avoiding her eye.
“Sure had THOSE guys running scared, didn’t I?” (Y/N) joked, only for Hyun to remain silent. (Y/N) had let out an awkward chuckle, unsure how to continue the conversation. Nervously fidgeting with her hand, she audibly winced and looked at her knuckles, the skin now split and beginning to bruise.
“...You shouldn’t have helped...” Hyun muttered, motioning towards her hurt hand. (Y/N) had rolled her eyes, pointing at every other bruise, scrape, and cut that was created on Hyun’s body. “I think I’ll live with a few cuts, you look like shit.” She commented, causing the boy to look down once more.
(Y/N) sighed, looking at her own bleeding hand as she processed the situation. Suddenly, she looked up, and offered the friendliest smile she could to the boy. “Hey, why don’t I patch you up?” She asked, making the boy look at her in surprise, making her scoff. “Oh come on, you didn’t think I was just going to leave you like that, did you?” She asked, offering her her hand towards the boy.
Hyun only looked at her in shock, glancing between her and her hand. Hesitantly, he took it, (Y/N) easily pulling him to his feet.
She smiled at the boy, pointing a thumb at herself. “Just stick with me, and I’ll make sure no one hurts a hair on you.” She declared, causing heat to rise to Hyun’s face.
The girl he admired for the longest time, wanted to be around him. Not out of pity, or as some sort of joke, but out of pure kindness. She didn’t look at him with disgust or hatred, but with warmth and happiness.
In that moment, he knew he was safe.
(Y/N) had chuckled at the memory, too busy reminiscing to hear the faint shuffling of blankets behind her to notice a figure quietly approaching her. Soon, familiar arms wrapped around her strong frame, causing her to smile and stand up, turning around to face the culprit. Hyun had looked up at her tiredly, yawning as he squinted through his sleepy state.
Smiling tiredly, Hyun leaned up and pecked (Y/N)’s lips, causing the girl to smile more. “Hey...” she whispered, “What are you doing awake? You should sleep.” She told him, causing Hyun to shake his head and take a seat next to her. “I couldn’t sleep, so I might as well stay up until it’s my turn to take watch.” He answered.
(Y/N) looked at him with concern before sitting back down. “Are you having nightmares again?” She asked, causing Hyun to stay silent.
He didn’t bother looking at her. Instead, he looked down, his eyes gazing at the pinkish scars on his wrists. For a moment, he struggled to speak, having difficulty finding the words he wished to speak before finally meeting (Y/N)’s eyes.
“...Do you regret helping me?”
(Y/N) looked at him in shock, before her expression suddenly turned into one of sadness.
“What..?” She asked in disbelief, causing Hyun to exhale and shake his head. “Nevermind, forget what I said. It was stupid of me to ask.” He quickly dismissed, attempting to stand back up before (Y/N) quickly grabbed his hand, looking at him with sadness.
“Hyun, where is this all coming from?” She asked, watching the dark haired boy intently.
Hyun had stayed silent, hesitation evident on his pale features as he looked in thought. Slowly, he sat back down. Keeping his eyes trained on the ground.
“Everyone keeps saying I’m a monster… and they’re right.” He spoke up, still keeping his gaze down.
“W-What if… What if I’m not strong enough to stop myself from turning?” He asked, suddenly looking at her with terrified eyes. “What if I turn and then come after you? I-I could end up killing you! I wouldn’t be able to l-“
“Hyun, slow down!” (Y/N) piped up, causing Hyun’s rambling to come to a halt. He looked at her, dark brown eyes beginning to gloss over as she sighed.
(Y/N) placed both her hands on his cheeks, looking him in the eyes as she touched him with care.
“Hyun, I don’t care what you think. Deep down, I know you are strong enough to fight back. You’ve made it this far, I know you can do it.” She smiled, causing Hyun to look away, a blush painting his cheeks.
“But… I’m not like you… you’re one of our strongest fighters..” he said, his voice filled with self-hate.
(Y/N) frowned, making the boy look at her.
“Everything does not depend on brawn Hyun. You are so much more than what your body is made up of. I know you can survive this, not only because you’re smart, but because I believe in you.” She argued, pulling her hands away from his face.
Those words echoed through Hyun’s mind like a broken record. Those four words had ignited a fire within him, making his chest feel a great warmth.
He was never used to people praising him, not since his life went to hell.
He felt his eyes began to water, staring at (Y/N) in shock as a warm smile was brought upon her features.
Quickly, he engulfed her in a hug. Hiding his face within her shoulder as more tears began to spill. He felt her arms wrap around his body, holding him tight.
Just like that day, he knew he was safe.
