He had to wonder what sort of world Lucina lived in if a sight of foliage was a rarity, if nonexistent at all. Brows knit together at the sheer imagery of such a thing. How cold and uninviting the lands must appear. War-torn and barren of life…
For the moment, Yuma had focused his attention primarily on his infantile plants. Briefly did he imagine a world where raising these seedlings from the ground up is an impossible feat.
Such depressing imagery left a sour taste on Yuma’s tongue.
"Eh?" He had spaced out for that moment, failing to properly take in Lucina’s initial statements. Still… a world devoid of greenery and life… "It ain’t lonely! Th’seedlin’s make good ‘nough company fer me.” A pause, and an agitated exhale. "If y’wanna help, then sure. I got a waterin’ can over there. Give these lil guys a lil sprinkle, yeah? Jus’ a lil, don’t fuckin’ drown ‘em.”
Lucina seemed taken aback for a moment - her blue eyes gazing at Yuma with very clear interest. The seedlings were company for him? There was a long pause before the female spoke softly. "Can you speak to plants? I have heard of people who have magical powers, but never someone who has spoken to plants."
While it might have seemed like a childish thing to say, Lucina came from a world where magic truly existed. Not that she planned to elaborate on it. "I won't 'drown' them." Standing, the female grabbed hold of the watering can before setting about watering the plants. As she promised, none of the plants were given too much water. Realizing that she'd lapsed into a somewhat awkward silence, Lucina glanced up Yuma once again.
"Isn't it counter-intuitive to do this at night? I was under the impression that plants needed sunlight to grow."

Rin’s early rising usually kicked off with a tide of vigorous laps at the crack of dawn courtesy of the indoor pool, his swim regimen being one of the scant remnants of normalcy he’d been able to retain in this place. A temporary vacuum where his mind was wiped clear of wondering if today would be his turn to wind up like so many student’s whose corpses he’d witnessed scattered about the grounds.
For no real discernible reason, other than perhaps a welcome switch of scenery and particularly inviting glow from the shoreline, Rin had opted to practice in the ocean that morning. Disregarding any warnings of sharks paroling the bay, even feigning ignorance upon seeing the occasional protruding fins slicing through the surface. By comparison to the school itself, bathing in shark infested waters didn’t feel quite so fatal anymore.
Hearing the concerned enquiry rise above the chorus of crashing waves just as he ‘d been prepping for another crawl, claret irises shifted to focus their attention onto the female. It was rare to see anyone out here at this time, which was usually how Rin preferred it.
"Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?" A crank of his neck.
"Did you need something?"
Was he absolutely mad? The ocean was full of sharks - or so she'd heard. Frowning to herself, the teen attempting to look as if she wasn't as worried as she felt. "I thought there were man-eating sharks in the ocean." Her words were muttered before Lucina's eyes widened. Sure, there were murders going on in the school. Sure, Lucina had seen more than a few deaths in her short time. Only now did it strike her that other students might not have felt the same way.
Did she need something? Maybe not. But he might have. "Listen!" Marching her way until half of her boots were submerged beneath the ocean waves, Lucina swallowed back her worry before preparing what she wanted to say. "You don't need to do something dangerous or something that may harm you! Even if things seem impossible, this isn't the way to solve it." Lucina was surprised at how her voice rang out in the fresh morning air. While she wasn't the best at giving speeches, surely this would stop him from harming himself.
That was what he was doing, correct?
Holding out her hand to Rin - despite their distance - Lucina fixed him with a soft gaze. "I'll help you through it, so you don't need to do this or handle your feelings alone." Silently, she waited for a reply as her heart pounded away in her ears. Surely he'd take up her offer. She'd been eloquent enough.
A protector? Well. That much, he isn’t sure of. After all, he can’t exactly call this setting something he’d expect a protector to show up in so freely. Wouldn’t they keep to the shadows for their own protection? It didn’t matter right now, at least. What mattered now was that this stranger is way too close to the one thing that keeps his mind off of frustrating territory right now.
"What does it look like?" It should be obvious, thought Yuma. Of course he’s growing plants. Painted by an off-white shine were a few stalks short a dozen of seedlings, hand-picked by Yuma himself, some by seeds and others young and still potted upon his discovery thereof, now long replanted into the earth. Still, the stranger seemed… ignorant of plant life.
"That means y’ain’t never seen a tree, then?" That leaves the question of ‘How do you even breathe air?’ For now he was allowed the luxury of seeing the stranger’s sky blues, their distance apart from one another leaving Yuma ignorant of the queer marking branded in the iris. "Jus’ try not ta’ step on th’little guys, yeah? They were sick when I got ‘em.” Working with tropical soil… is difficult.
Forgoing any sense of appearing intimidating, Lucina slowly dropped to crouch at the edge of the area Yuma had prepared. Replacing her mask briefly, she lifted her hand and placed her fingertips against the dirt. "My sincerest apologies. It's been a few years since I've seen anyone farm at all." She must have looked the fool to him, sitting in that position and gazing at the plot of land in what seemed to be intense examination.
Lifting herself back up to stand, Lucina placed a hand on her hip. Well, there was no point in continuing to hide from someone who meant no harm. The mask was removed fully this time - revealing a feminine face. "I've seen trees. Most of them were dead, though. When I was a young child, I remember very distantly a variety of flowers and plant life. It's difficult to say what was real and what I read in books."
Turning her gaze to Yuma fully, Lucina allowed one brief, almost self-conscious smile to appear on her lips. "May I help? My experience is lacking, but it must be lonely tending to this place without someone else."
Now more than ever, Lucina is aware of just how dangerous this place can be. A murder has happened - one that escaped her notice until it had already played out. She can do nothing more than mutter to the victim that she'll find their killer and bring them peace somehow. This isn't something she can dwell on for long lest she begin to lose hope. Just as before, she vows to herself that tomorrow she will run faster. She will protect those on this island that cannot protect themselves. It is something she must do.
Tonight, Yuma was restless. It’s difficult to feel anywhere close to being at ease considering the environment of which he finds himself succumbing to. Though it is well into the summer, Yuma found himself seeking solace in raising plant life from the ground up. A plot of land— something small— had been picked out on day one, and little by little the vampire works to fertilize and make use of the land he’s provided for himself.
From the Rocketpunch Market, he had secured a hoe.
Carelessly it had been swung over his shoulders; Yuma presses onward up until a stranger’s voice had called for him. He responds with annoyance, a furrow of brows masked by dirty blonde strands coupled with moonlight’s subtle shine.
The stranger dons a mask— already he feels on edge. Considering the nature of this setting… Yuma sneers in response. “Lil bitches first. Who th’fuck are ya, callin’ fer me in th’dead o’ night like that, hah?” He has a hoe, and he isn’t afraid to use it.
Well, that wasn't exactly what this person had been expecting. Didn't he know who they looked like? "I am not a 'little bitch', to use your term. I am merely a protector." For a brief moment, it seemed as if he had a weapon. Sharp blue eyes flicked down to the item in his hands before realization was reflected in them. Was that a hoe?
A step was taking closer to the area that Yuma stood. What was this? "...You're growing something?" Strange. Ylisse had been barren for many years. Stopping at the edge of the plot so as not to destroy Yuma's work, a hand was lifted to pull down the mask only slightly - enough to reveal a pair of bright blue eyes. A strange marking rested in one, nearly marring it.
"It's been a long while since I've seen plants."
Thunder rumbled softly in the distance as Lucina stood in the doorway of the hotel - blue eyes examining the sky with increasing concern. A storm was approaching. A bad one by the looks of it. Already, she could see people rushing to return to their cabins before the sky burst open and drenched them all. Yet there was one person who stood on the beach - her eyes focused on the same sky that Lucina was watching. Someone who seemed to be looking out for trouble as well. Stepping from the protection of the hotel, Lucina crossed the distance between them and came to stand at the young woman's side. Folding her hands behind her back, she spoke softly so as not to startle the other. "Quite the storm heading our way, don't you think?"
The moon rose high in the sky. For the most part, a stillness had settled throughout the island long ago. It was peaceful in it's own way, but not nearly peaceful enough for the island's many inhabitants to be at ease. Yet for the all the currently-slumbering students, there was one slowly patrolling the various buildings. With a makeshift wooden sword hanging from their waist and a mask obscuring their features, he looked like he'd stepped from the legends of old. In fact, whoever this person was looked very similar to the legendary Hero-King himself. Marth. A hand was lifted to adjust the mask - moonlight glinting off the metal. At the same time, their attention seemed to be caught by someone a few yards ahead of them. "What are you doing out so late at night?" The voice was passable for both a male and a female. "Identify yourself."
Barely three days on the island and already Lucina could see how beaten down the people who lived here were. It made her feel helpless, more than being robbed of her sword and her powers. Each morning, Lucina awoke near dawn to begin her training regimen. Push-ups, sit-ups, various stretches, and then a long run on the beachfront - all taken before most students were even awake. As such, Lucina hadn't seen anyone during this morning routine. However, today was different. Halfway through her run, she came to a stop as she noticed someone in the water. Wasn't the ocean supposed to be dangerous? Stopping at the water's edge, the female cupped her hands around her mouth to extend the range of her voice before calling out to the stranger. "Hello! Are you alright?"
I fell in love with Lucina even though I don’t play the game
