This weekend we started a new series on #Paleostream!
Pocket Prehistory is a project in which I draw small extinct critters as museum specimens, life sized, on post card formats.
I only do adults so don't expect a T. rex fetus or something ;)
We plan to sell these as postcards on Dinocon in Birmingham this year.

A swarm of molting Eryon attempt to fend off an invading fleet of Dollocaris.
Eryon is a decapod crustacean from Jurassic Europe, hailing from such areas as the good old Solnhofen. Dollocaris is also a crustacean, but it's a thylacocephalan, an odd group with enormous compound eyes and a litany of seemingly-raptorial limbs used to snab prey. Concerningly large, this animal could reach 30 cm/1 ft in length.
S. snuffleupagus, a newly described species of fish, is named after the beloved Sesame Street character, Mr. Snuffleupagus, to which it bear
SNUFFLEUPAGUS REAL
Fantastic article!! The guys looking for it were fish researchers who saw it one time, knew instantly it was an undescribed species, and then tried for nearly 20 years to find and document it!
It's a type of ghost pipefish, related to seahorses, and it floats around coral reefs looking like a piece of algae and hunting unsuspecting prey
They are, of course, named after Snuffleupagus from Sesame Street!
Later on it the project, they got citizen science involved, and people across the Pacific started reporting sightings of snuffy fish from all over!
Hooray for science and hooray for S. snuffleupagus !
Something different, a little beaver sculpture. This piece will be available this Friday, May 22nd at 8pm Eastern time.
they just look like this
too many of you are being far too cruel.
Brown dorcopsis (Dorcopsis muelleri) and white-striped dorcopsis (Dorcopsis hageni). Dorcopsis are cat-sized marsupials native to Western New Guinea, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, closely related to kangaroos and wallabies. Their tails are partially hairless and they look remarkably greyhound-like when seen from the side.
Repenomamus, stop eating baby Psittacosauruses!
Oh for god's sake dude.
When I was at the natural history museum, the fossil section had stickers on the glass to engage children - things like "Flap your arms like a pterodactyl" or "Measure your hand against the mosasaurus." However the first of these I encountered, which I found alarming and threatening without context, was a sticker reading "Struggle like you are stuck in a tar pit"
I feel like more bright colors, an exclamation mark, or a more whimsical font choice would've also helped here to indicate that it is a Fun Activity For Children. Instead it felt like getting instructed in my inevitable fate by a road sign
