While you weren’t looking, these states tried to pass some truly garbage abortion laws

This week, legislators in the South seemed to be in a race to outdo each other to see who can pass the most restrictive, sneaky and downright unconstitutional anti-abortion legislation first. 

South Carolina got the ball rolling by trying to narrow the window of time in which a person can have an abortion and require any woman who is married and living with her husband to obtain his consent before terminating a pregnancy. Texas followed suit with a new bill that would require abortion providers to bury or cremate fetal remains. And in Alabama, a restrictive new law was struck down.

Directorial genius Ava DuVernay takes on mass incarceration in her new documentary, titled The 13th. In the film, DuVernay confronts the long standing history of mass incarceration and its effect on African Americans. Taking on issues like convict leasing and Jim Crow Laws, she explores some sensitive yet hard-hitting topics. “I got to confront, and had to deal with, the stereotypes I’ve held. A big one for me was the notion that our current national status of having the world’s highest incarceration rate was the doing of Republicans, the doing of conservatives. In analyzing, investigating, and pulling back the layers, you start to see that there’s been political maneuvering that’s crossed party lines in very disturbing ways,” she says.

An arrest warrant has been issued for journalist Amy Goodman, who filmed Dakota Access Pipeline protest.

Journalist Amy Goodman recently filmed the Dakota Access Pipeline company turning dogs on protesters; now, there’s a warrant out for her arrest in Morton County, North Dakota.

“This is an unacceptable violation of freedom of the press,” Goodman said in a statement, according to Democracy Now!, the publication for which she works. “I was doing my job by covering pipeline guards unleashing dogs and pepper spray on Native American protesters.” Goodman is being charged with one offense.

Members of the Islamic community in Fort Pierce, Florida, woke up to find that their local mosque had been set on fire overnight in the early hours of the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha, a four-day festival that started on Monday and signals the end of the pilgrimage to Mecca.

Omar Mateen, the gunman who killed 49 clubgoers at Pulse nightclub in June, worshipped at the Islamic Center of Fort Pierce before his death in June. Surveillance video revealed exactly how the fire was started.
