Riding the Instagram Wave
Because sticking to one social media channel is absolutely no fun, we wanted to take a moment to let our Tumblr friends and fans know that we also have an Instagram account!
You can find us under 'fathomgames', and will be treated to all sorts of fun shenanigans. In addition to office shenanigans, desk toys, concept art, office views and other random awesomeness - we also feature fun videos from time to time.
For instance - if you'd like to see a video of Office Iron Man being disruptive during our work day, our Instagram account is the place that you want to be.
We hope to see you over there!
Sunny Days, Wiping the Clouds Away....
It's a GORGEOUS day here in Vancouver, and while we're all hard at work on some very exciting projects... we also know the importance of taking a little time out to enjoy these moments.
Just hanging around our office, enjoying the view...
HIRE THIS WOMAN: WRITER CHRISTIAN BERANEK
By Janelle Asselin
In the overwhelmingly male comic book industry, it has been a challenge for some editors and readers to see the ever growing number of talented women currently trying to make a name for themselves. With that in mind, ComicsAlliance offers Hire This Woman, a recurring feature designed for comics readers as well as editors and other professionals, where we shine the spotlight on a female comics pro on the ascendance. Some of these women will be at the very beginning of their careers, while others will be more experienced but not yet “household names.”
Christian Beranek has worked as a writer for years, including a stint at Disney creating comics. She wrote Dracula vs. King Arthur and is currently working on a number of projects including the webcomic Validation.

The Story of Comic Book Development
Thanks to our appearance at Fan Expo Vancouver in April, we've seen an exciting increase in the Sky Pirates of Neo Terra comics! We thought this would be the perfect time for us to share the comic art development process with our fans.
First up is the page and panel creation. All of our comics are drawn by the talented Camilla d’Errico. Illustration fans may find it interesting to know that Camilla has a very traditional process when it comes to concept work. Preferring the analogue route, she first sketches all comics out in pencil and then inks in her work using Bic pens. The difference in workflow compared to other digital processes helps to lend a unique look to the Sky Pirates world.
Next, we scan the pages as high resolution files and send them off to a colorist. We work with several colorists, which allows us to have more than one project in development at the same time. The colorists bring Camilla’s pages to vibrant life, and sometimes make minor adjustments to body shapes/feature placement. As you can see in the above image, colour can help to change the tone or mood of an image. For many, this is the most exciting part of the process!
Last (but not least) we see dialogue and thought bubbles added to the comics. Placement is important at this stage – you want to ensure no key artistic elements are obscured by text, but also make sure that the dialogue flow is obvious and clear enough for readers to follow. Without dialogue, our comics would simply be gorgeous artwork! And while the art can certainly stand on its own, being able to engross our fans in the rich history of the Sky Pirates universe is one of the main goals behind our comics.
Thanks for taking this journey with us! If you'd like to read the Sky Pirates web comics, you can do so here: http://bit.ly/1dptKje
Sky Pirates Concept Artwork: A Peek Behind the Curtain
Towards the end of 2013, we decided to dive into the world of Instagram and start an account for our studio. What we found there was an exciting, passionate community with a heavy focus on artwork. Our studio shenanigans go over quite well on instagram, but we noticed that fans really enjoyed it when we started to share 'behind the scenes' concept artwork for Sky Pirates of Neo Terra.
This interest has led us to sharing more intimate development moments with our fans, with the concept artwork now featuring heavily in content across all of our social channels - Instagram, Facebook and twitter.
Without a doubt, this interest can be directly linked to our talented employees. We are very lucky to work with Camilla d'Errico and have her on board as our lead artist. Her hard work in developing the world of Neo Terra, along with popular characters such as Billy, Suma, Ricket and Rena has resulted in a colourful universe that translates well in both comic and video game format.
The ability to pull back the curtain a bit, and publicly explore things such as the range of facial expressions in our characters has been a fun development. And the 'rough stuff' is a great companion to all of the finished artwork we also continue to share.
Stay tuned for even more exciting concept artwork as the world of Neo Terra expands, and we thank everyone that has followed us on this journey so far!
Be sure to keep your eyes peeled to our social channels for future news!
House of Picard
It started due to a request on Twitter a few months back: someone we followed fantasized about what a House of Cards x Star Trek spoof entitled 'House of Picard' would look like. We wanted to indulge the internet, and came up with this:
Fun fact: We did not tweet this in September, the September 28th release date was a nod to the original air date of Next Generation as per Wikipedia.
Eye See You: A Short Lunch Time Tale
Humans seem to be mentally hard-wired to see faces in things. We are certainly no different here in the Fathom office. Some of our employees decided to take things up a notch, and now we have a work culture that involves the fun and occasionally surprising placement of googly eyes in unlikely places.
Today, we noticed that our Community Manager's lunch as seen below:
STRONGLY resembles an oft-forgotten villain from the 1986 My Little Pony movie:
Nothing can stop the Smooze? Indeed.
We need to get one of these horns for Loki!
Survey Says: Everyone Loves Loki!
Hands down our most popular employee, Loki the Office dog has been stepping up his game as of late. We wanted to take a quick moment to honour Fathom's favourite furball, and share with you a few highlights from the past few months.
Looking back to 2013, he was probably the hardest partying employee during the holiday season. It always showed the next day, because the lazy guy was found lying about the office completely incapacitated.
(Too much holiday cheer, Loki?)
He's been known to guard our office with a stern face, ensuring that visitors are kept in line and not overstaying their welcome.
(None shall pass... unless they have treats)
On Valentines Day he stepped it up a notch and put us all to shame with his smooth talking, dapper bow-tie wearing ways. The ladies couldn't resist, nor could anyone else!
(Seriously, who could ever resist that face?)
We're starting to wonder if all this popularity has gone to Loki's head, because the guy has started stealing people's phones, taking selfies and posting the photos to our social channels.
(We may have created a monster. A cute, fuzzy monster.)
Ultimately, it's well known that we are all quite fond of the guy and our fans seem to be as well! You can count on there being more Loki posts in the future as we continue to chronicle his daily office shenanigans!
Fathom's Fancy Dress Friday
Once a month, the Fathom team encourages a 'Fancy Dress Friday.' Most people know that jeans, graphic tees and hoodies are the day to day norm in game dev. So every now and then we like to mix it up a bit. Here are some highlights from a few recent Fancy Fridays! Even Loki the office dog gets in on the action now and then!

We didn't get a chance to see this while we were at Fan Expo, but we would have certainly been damn excited if we'd happened across it! AMAZING.
Fantastic Fun at Fan Expo Vancouver!
This past weekend, Fathom Interactive went to Fan Expo Vancouver to share our artwork and comics with the world. We were also there to have fun - and have fun we did.
The costumes were mind bogglingly awesome, and the fans - the fans were delightful! Thank you to everyone that stopped by our booth to grab free buttons, buy prints and comics and say hello. It was fantastic to see so many happy faces!
We hope you all had as much fun as we did! If you missed out on seeing us, don't fret - there is a chance we may be at Fan Expo Toronto as well!
Delivery Express - Now in Development
Fast food, fast rides, accidental heroes, twisted-looking villains and a grungy, post-apocalyptic world come together in Delivery Express: An Apocalypse Tale. This title features art of the very talented Sergi Brosa, and is currently in the early stages of development.
We are very excited to share some of this amazing concept art with the world! More information coming soon.
You can find Sergi on Tumblr over at artofbrosa for more amazing work!
Our Office Has Character!
What has been seen in this office cannot be unseen. Even the walls are blown away by the rad games we're producing. It turns out that Googly eyes are an important part of the developer tool-kit.
Sky Pirates of Neo Terra to Launch on Game Boy
We are very excited to announce that we will be releasing Sky Pirates of Neo Terra for the original Game Boy.
We were so excited about this project, we contacted Nintendo Power Magazine to let them know about the games release. We were thrilled to secure an official quote from them to use on the Sky Pirates box art.
Even Niero Gonzalez, the founder of destructoid weighed. "Finally, a new game to play on my original Game Boy! I don't know if it will be any good though," he stated excitedly.
Very Excited about my first ECCC, we are bringing the kids and are surprising someone with a ticket and a ride to come with. Are there any tips or suggestions you can give this newbie?
Hi! Ahhh, so excited you’re attending ECCC for the first time! We hope, no we know, you’ll have a great time! We covered a lot of what to expect with a previous post, so here are some tips!
Cash. Bring cash. While some exhibitors will have credit card machines or Square, there’s no guarantee how those will work during busy times at the con. So bring lots of cash! Especially if you want to get something from an independent artist, or something from Artist Alley, or a celebrity photo or autograph. We have ATMs on site, but why stand in line and pay ATM fees when you can just bring cash from your own bank?
Snacks. There are places to grab food in the convention center, but when you get hungry at lunch time, so do thousands of other people, so you’re going to be in line for a while. It sucks, and unfortunately there’s nothing we can do to increase the amount of food available for sale at the con. So bring snacks! That way if you’re in line for a panel or to meet someone awesome, you can snack and not get cranky because your body has run out of energy!
Water. There are water fountains interspersed randomly throughout the building, so bring a bottle to refill! Or bring multiple plastic bottles you can dispose of once you’ve finished them. You don’t want to get dehydrated, it’ll make you feel prematurely tired.
Shoes. One of our convention directors gave us the tip of bringing a different pair of shoes to wear for each day of the con. Because any shoe, no matter how comfortable, will make your feet hurt by the end of a long day walking around on concrete. If you bring different shoes, your feet will get a bit of a break!
Breaks. Take breaks! Get out of the building, walk around outside, sit down somewhere quiet, then go back in to the con. Or take time out to visit a panel, that will give you some time to sit, and listen to an interesting discussion. Little mental health breaks will help you make the most of your day!
Green. Employees of the Washington State Convention Center wear dark green blazers, and know everything about the building. If you see people walking around with bright green t-shirts, those are the Minions (trained volunteers) for Emerald City Comicon. So if you need help, if your kids get lost, if you have a question, ask someone in green!
For the kids, you should know there’s a kids area that they can hang out in (with your supervision), but that’s not the limit of what they can do! One of the best things for artists is when they meet a little fan who shows them a drawing of a superhero they did, or a story they wrote. We’ve seen many kids who carry around a sketchbook or autograph book and ask all the artists (and writers!) they can for a sketch. It’s a fun and inspiring thing for the kids and the creators, and most artists won’t charge, so it’s free!
Research. In the week before the convention, start looking at our website to get an idea of what you want to do, when it is, where in the building it is. When you arrive at ECCC you’ll get a program guide, which will have most of the same information. If you plan ahead, hopefully you won’t have regrets about something you missed during the con.
Okay that was just eight tips, we could probably think of more, but that’s a good place to start. Let us know if you have more questions. :)
Awesome tips for Emerald City Comicon, straight from the con folks themselves! See everyone soon <3
