After finishing the entire season of Insatiable, I made the huge mistake of going into the tag. So many people are hating this show without even having seen it. They are basing their opinions for a twelve hour season on a 90 second trailer that is barely indicative of the series. The revenge plot that’s played up so prominently in the trailer is a very small part of the show, it’s more an afterthought than an actual plot. The trailer also makes it look like she suddenly becomes more fashionable because she’s thin, which isn’t true. She dresses the same way she did before, until she is convinced to join a beauty pageant - which is where the revenge part comes in, because she believes if she wins everyone will love her and those that hated her before will be bitter and jealous - and gets new clothes and makeup from her coach. But she doesn’t always dress like that. She still wears T-shirts and jeans a lot of the time.
I think this series is very reminiscent of Heathers or Mean Girls. It has similar dark humor and many of the characters say things to people that no one should ever say to anyone. Although, I do think that this is more true of the second half of the season.
Also, the people claiming that they don’t like the fact that her life is magically better because she’s skinny, clearly didn’t watch anything beyond that trailer. Her life is miserable. She’s still living with body issues and self esteem problems. She can’t bring herself to wear a bathing suit in front of all the pretty popular girls in school because she still feels insecure inside. The show constantly says that being skinny doesn’t make your life better. In fact it kinda made her life worse in my opinion. This girl has some serious issues. She’s a mess.
Look, I won’t deny there are problems with this series. It’s new and it’s finding its voice. It takes time. The second half of the season is definitely better than the first, once they really let go and everything goes batshit crazy. I think it becomes a completely different and better show around episode 7. The first half of the season seems tame once you get this far. If you don’t like the show after having seen at least one episode, that’s fine. But don’t say you don’t like it or make claims based off of 90 seconds of footage.
