ON FEMINISM IN ELECTRONIC MUSIC SCENES People are increasingly aware of sexism in the music industry, and the different ways it manifests and the different levels on which it operates, and, despite the fact that club culture has its roots in inclusivity and equality, the world of dance music is also a perpetrator. Much has been written about the subject and the facts are clear and unarguable: nearly all club owners, DJs, promoters and producers are male, and there’s even a recent irritating recurrence of male producers creating work under female monikers, because, you know, female producers are a novelty. The long standing imbalance is one that’s reflected in most major industries, and the reasons for it don’t need rehashing here. But female DJs, promoters, club owners, producers DO exist. There is a male majority, yes, but not a complete monopoly. So where are they?
