Richie Tozier did all he did just for his friends.
So, this post made me think and, obviously someone surely had already pointed it out, but Richie is the only one that could have given zero fucks about the whole Pennywise thing.
And the reason is simple, and probably more important than it seems considering that it had happened in the book too.
The reason is that Richie is the only one that HAD CHOSEN to be one of Pennywise's target, because at the beginning HE WASN'T.
He is the only one that hadn't seen anything at all "Can only virgin see this stuff? Is that why I'm not seein' the shit?" but he purposely stayed with his friends because they were so frightened by this damn clown and he just decided "Okay, I believe you, let's kill"
And that's exactly what had happened after Bill showed him the album he was scared about in the book. He and Bill ha gone ARMED in the same spot Eddie had seen the leper, really fucking ready to shot the motherfucker.
From the start, the only thing that Richie wanted to do was stay near his friends, especially the one that was coping with the death of his little brother.
"He's not d-d-death, he's m-m-m-missing."
"Yeah, he's missing. Sorry, Bill"
He is just trying and be a good friend.
And so he finally see the frightening clown, and guess what? He was fucking frightened.
But, o no, if Bill wants to go INTO its house he needs to tag along with the others are you kidding, they are still friends after all. And so the whole group follow Bill and Richie and Eddie end up going inside with Bill.
And that's another interesting thing about Richie, about he deciding to be targeted: Pennywise never, ever attacked him first.
Richie never met Pennywise by accident, ever, he is the only one that HAD always done a first move, and not only at the first met. ALWAYS.
He was looking for It's house -> It showed up
He entered in fucking Neibolt -> It scared him with the poster
He was becoming fearless near Bill -> It lurked him in the clown room with Eddie's voice
He freaking jump on its back -> It threw it to the ground
He affirmed he was going to kill it on its face -> It attacked him
And the interations ended here. Richie wasn't part of Pennywise's plan, he.was.never.targeted.
Let's just face it, he was just a pain in IT'S ass. He did all by himself.
And you also know what this comport? That he never received the normal treatment It had used all along (aka Spowning Near You and "BUUU"). And you know who also didn't receive that behavior act? Ben and Bill. Because they all had purpose.
Ben wanted to solve the mystery, Bill wanted to save Georgie and Richie, well, Richie wanted to save his friends.
So he threw the whole thing on himself by his own choice.
And he know it. He know and was willing to help them with all of himself.
Until someone had got hurt.
And then he had become mad because BILL still wants to chase that motherfucker even if there's no possible way they could actually defeit it, because It's too strong.
But Bill wanted vegance, couldn't accept his brother assassination and just WANTED to be the cause of that demon's end.
And so they fight, because Richie doesn't want to die, doesn't want anyone to die, but Bill has a different purpose and the two can't coexist.
"Eddie was nearly killed! And...
But as soon as another of his friend is in danger, Richie immediately forget all his anger and go to chase the demon clown AGAIN.
And when Bill got trapped under Pennywise' hands, guess who's the one that started a literal villain mologue, telling Bill the LITTLE SHIT he is, and how is all his goddam fault if Richie had gone through Hell and back. And that now he HAD TO finish it.
Because Richie started all of this FOR BILL.
And when all ended, when Bill can finally accepts Georgie's death, Richie is the first one that go and hug him. Because that was the point all along: being a good friend and stay with them in hard times.
Richie Tozier was a normal goddam boy that just wanted to help his friends. He could have a normal life but decide otherwise, just for them. Because they were the thing that mattered for him from the start.
And you know what is the worst part?
In the end. Is the only one who had never, ever got a good thing in return for all he had done.
The only survivors that didn't get the happy ending they all deserved.
