S9E17 - Buck & Theo
Amazing photograph taken in the fraction of a second where the target doesn’t even know he’s being tackled yet. Idiot.
thought of this immediately and was delighted to discover it’s the same op

dust to dust
9-1-1 (TV) | Buck/Eddie | Chapter 13 | 8,279
4995 South Bedford Street is the only house with lights on. Eddie watches it for hours, searching for any sign of movement. He looks down at the note again. Buck's scribble of "When you're ready" stares back at him. He peels the key off the letter, closing his fist around it until it digs into his hand. Is he ready? It's been eighty years since he last saw Buck. So much has happened in that time.
Eddie sighs and walks to the yellow house. He stands in front of the door, listening. His heart starts pounding at the voices. His hand shakes as he puts the key in the lock and turns it. The door opens and Eddie expects the voices to stop but they don't, so Eddie follows them.

thought of buck tentatively reaching out to margaret and philip for them to meet theo because the only times they've wanted to connect with their kids is through maddie's pregnancies, and they do come, but when they see him philip inhales sharply and goes 'oh, he looks just like--' and buck knows he wasn't about to say his name. and the two of them keep tearing up looking at theo and at some point margaret excuses herself and philip gives buck an apologetic look before following and he just hears '-- it's just so hard' from the hallway and feels a little tug on his pant leg and looks down to see theo watching him, and he forces a smile on his face and takes theo away before he can feel even an ounce of what buck does.
and the two of them are polite afterwards but they keep making little comments about how lucky buck is (as if it's lucky that theo lost his parents. as if it's lucky that buck had to see two friends die in front of him), how he needs to treasure theo (in a tone of voice like they don't think buck has ever known how to treasure anything properly in his life). in every single word, every interaction, buck can feel it unspoken in the air: it's not fair. it's not fair that you have him. it's not fair that you get--
they can't ever quite look directly at theo. they look at buck even less. buck doesn't protest when they both cut the trip short early. he scoops theo up after the door closes behind them, presses his face into his hair.
'they seemed sad,' theo comments, a little curious, a little empathetic. plenty of people have talked about how much theo reminds them of buck. buck has told plenty of people about how much theo reminds him of connor and kameron. his parents saw none of this.
buck rocks theo a little in his arms. 'they are,' he agrees. 'but not because of you, bud.'
theo nods, like he trusts buck's word implicitly. 'okay,' he says. then: 'are they coming over again?'
'do you want them to?'
a little hum, then a woosh as theo flies his toy plane through the air. he doesn't like toy cars yet. his parents brought him a set of car figurines, then looked at buck accusingly when theo had burst into tears when he saw them, as if buck hadn't told them about the accident already.
'nuh-uh,' theo says, and the easy way he says it makes buck smile, despite everything.
'okay,' buck says. 'then i don't think so, spider-man. because we're a package deal, right? united front.'
and he doesn't. neither of them mention another visit again.
OH OH ALSO the maddie of it all. buck later has dinner with maddie and they watch theo and jee play while buck tells her about all of it and after a pause she's like: 'you know-- sometimes, jee reminds me of daniel.'
and buck looks at her and maddie shrugs and smiles and goes 'daniel was-- you looked alike, yeah, but you two had very different personalities.' she looks over at their kids for a moment, and then: 'they both have that little scrunched-up serious look, when they're trying to decide on something. it's uncanny.'
buck listens to her, and goes: 'oh, i didn't know.'
and maddie says: 'yeah, because jee is her own person. i never wanted to make her feel like anything less. it just-- it surprised me, at first, when mom and dad played with her so much, and never commented on how she also picked out all the red skittles from a bag first.'
the two of them sit with that for a bit, and then maddie sighs. 'sometimes i think-- they loved daniel, they really did. but it's been three decades, and i wonder if they still love him, or just the space he left behind.'
buck looks at the way jee is playing with theo, solemnly teaching him how to play with her barbies, and wonders if there had been a world where daniel played with him with that same little-kid seriousness, the kind that maddie never really could give him, because she'd been so much older than him.
'hey,' he says, nudging her in the side. 'you still love him. that means something.'
'you think?'
'yeah,' and she puts her head on his shoulder, and he wraps his arm around her, and they both see their kids playing together -- all the bits of them that were made from others, yes, but themselves, too. jee and theo, grinning in the evening light, so, so loved.
the bad thing about having unhealthy habits due to mental illness, is when you DO do something healthy style you can't brag about about it because then people will then know you've been doing it yucky style all along. Like you can't brag you changed your sheets or brushed your teeth because then ppl will be like oh did you not brush your teeth regularly before? Thats yucky disgusting! So you just gotta keep it to yourself. And be proud alone, I suppose.
So what do you want? I don't know.
