Chunji nodded at the girl’s hesistant word. “It’s understandable if you’re new. And thanks, I’ve had it for a while so it’s not new.” He spoke with a small shrug of his shoulders, not really one to gloat about his powers.

"Nice to meet you too Hayi-ssi. I’m guessing you’re very new to your power?" He asked quietly, looking at the girl with a cheerful skip as she walked next to him.

"i'm not really a stranger to my powers -- i'm just new to this whole mutant school thing, y'know?" she was simply too young. too young for this war waged on by the enemy. but who is the enemy? hayi could only hope that it was not them. still, her face contained the same gleeful expression as earlier. better off smiling than not, after all. stress was something she would rather not have. "how long have you been staying here?" it was a simple & innocent question; something so shallow and light, and for a moment, it seemed as if she had no troubles at all.

as soon as the unearthly vile stench coming from the lower floors reached his highly sensitive nostrils, the realization of the second round of game having begun dawned and his power was immediately activated in anticipation of the teacher’s official announcement. from the base of his right elbow, an elongated double-ended blade was slowly forming, transforming his whole forearm into a massive razor-sharp melee weapon.

the process was agonizing, of course, for his bone structure was altered and his fleshes were torn to produce the cutting instrument, but he was depending on the pain it caused to stabilize his mentality. as a child he’d received expensive treatment for his abnormal fear, and yet, as his gaze was fixed on the ground where the water was steadily raising, it seemed something long locked away was threatening to break out again. thus, a grimace was caused to distort his features.

a barely audible response was given, meant to reassure himself rather than answer her question. covering half of his twisted visage with a handkerchief he removed from his pocket as the rotten odor started to get overpowering, he observed the movements of the eerie creatures beneath the murky currents for a few seconds before killing one with an accurate thrust of his reconstructed ’ hand ‘.

turned out the organism was ( more or less ) a fish, attached to four metallic legs and various tubes, whose carcass he quickly discarded afterwards. it was safe to assume others were of the same kind.

cued a gesture for her to follow him as he made his way out of the classroom. a ‘ sidekick ‘ would come in useful in such a situation.

her power was nothing like his. well, except for the fact that both of their bodies would have to change for them to use their abilies, but other than that, there was no common point.

( ` she was icarus, who was so easily blinded by freedom & bronze wings, and it was painfully obvious that she would soon plummet to her death. the thought was natural. all it took was a deep breath, and soon, she felt a familiar pain at her lower back. she could feel the feathers pierce her skin, tearing out the flesh & skin that got in their way. she falls to the ground — the pain shot up, almost like a pair of scissors, and her back was soon open.

she wasn’t bleeding. in fact, blood didn’t even stain her shirt, nor her pristine wings the rested now on her back. last time she grew a pair of wings, they were weak and almost gray, with feathers that almost seemed to fall off. now, the wings were white & strong. )

      He once again looked at her with surprise. “Awesome? Cool?” he stuttered, and was currently stupefied by her response. He regained his composure before saying “It won’t be cool when it actually happens” he shakes his head at her with his lips pressed together with concern. He found her child like gestures amusing and said encouragingly “Being secretive is good, that means you won’t be found out easily”

     Once again, she surprised him again when Hayi tiptoed to push the corner of his lips into a smile with a compliment about smiling. It was getting more difficult for him to maintain his composure if she continued to do things suddenly. When she pulled back and released the corner of his lips, he started off “I…” he wanted to say that he smiled a lot, but when he thought about it, he didn’t really smile a lot. He either glared or spewed out foul words whenever the opportunity was given. He pinched her cheeks in return and immediately pulled back while mumbling another offense to cover up his lack of response “Small fry has chubby cheeks” before whistling. The offense was lame, but he didn’t care.

      “Nah, I don’t want perfect cookies, that’s boring. I want unique cookies” he gave her a childish grin, “Yea, I’m okay” he replied simply and found her sudden change in tone more… mature? He wasn’t sure and watched her as she fixed her collar. He didn’t quite understand what Hayi was trying to do, but he didn’t bother to question her. When they reached the center of the maze, Woobin found that the center of the maze was beautifully decorated. It was like a hidden palace. Woobin was slightly mesmerized by the place when Hayi came into view and went for the swings. Woobin walked over to her as she motioned him to go over. He shrugged the backpack off his shoulder and proffered it to her so that she could get out her treats. The thumbs up from Hayi seemed slightly old-fashioned to Woobin, but he didn’t care and gave her a warm smile at her encouraging gesture. “Well, I could have used wind to fly over to the center” he shrugged. He didn’t use it for some reason, not only because it wouldn’t be fun, but he also wanted to stay with her a little longer. To Woobin, the reason for staying with her is because he found her amusing, nothing more.

        "At least you won't die when you use your powers." Hayi didn't want to talk about her limits -- she hated limits. Abhorred them, even, but you can't really get rid of them.

       "You what?" His unfinished sentence picked at her mind, and interest was her enemy once more. He really should smile more often, she thinks, but smiles were more valuable when rare. Woobin suddenly reached out to pinch her cheeks, and she glares at him, and if she were a cat, she would've hissed and clawed at his face.

        Woobin should be thankful that she wasn't.

        "Damn right I have chubby cheeks." She pushes them with both of her hands, "They make me cuter!" She puts two fists of either sides of her face, and she moves them -- "Bbuing, bbuing!"

        Woah. That must've felt embarrassing. And stupid. "That was awful. Sorry." She takes her small bag and opens the flap, loosening the binds, and she takes the pack of cookies out, putting it on the space beside her. It was then when she realizes how beautiful the place really was -- the garden was wonderfully trimmed, flowers of all kinds adorning the bushes. There were roses, and she was drawn to them, like a moth to a flame.

        "Well, flying wouldn't have been that much exciting, yeah?" Her feet found the ground, and she walks towards the flowers, right hand reaching for the blossoms. Soon enough, her hand finds the smooth stalk, and she pulls it, and -- "ouch!"

        A small thorn buried itself under the white skin of her palm, and she blows on it carefully, walking dejectedly to the bench where the cookies lay. "Gotta be more careful next time."

it’s cute, sura has probably thought of that a lot already but she still has to say it. her plump, innocent self is causing her heart to swell in absolute delight. even the fear hormones that are tempting her is endearing. 

sura can hear pedophile coming from the girl, well that’s a bit too far. but nonetheless it makes sura smile to herself in sick amusement. hold on, doesn’t she want to be the catcher in the rye? the one who is the saviour of innocence against the evils of maturity?

oh but then lets not all forget that sura is all a little bit more twisted in her ways. 

oh my was sura really that scary? sick actions for sick people. she still laughs, the little girl was exciting her. “a lot of stuff triggers aggression.” sura replies, her smirk off but her arms folded and her height towering over the little girl. 

"who do you think i am?" sura asks, she knows the answers, her fear hormones are dripping the petty and awfully amusing answers but she wants to hear what the girl had to say. "be honest, i want to know." 

sura is surprised that the little girl doesn’t even know her.

eyes full of dark amusement pierced through hayi’s line of vision, and hayi stares back. it was a grave mistake, she figures, and the other girl’s lips curve upward.

"do i trigger aggression?" asking was yet another fault; it raised curiosity — raised interest, and hayi didn’t want people’s interest. stupid, stupid, stupid.

everyone has dumb moments, and hayi’s often decided to show up in the most inconvenient times.

"you…" hayi didn’t know for sure who this woman was — who this woman whose voice was laced with playful malice was. "you are fear." and maybe it was not her smartest answer, but it was close enough to home —

at least, hayi hopes so. and she gulps in anticipation.

[` she nods seriously, her eyes lighting up. as a testimony to the steadily heating weather, her hair is wound up in a messy bun at the back of her head, and the idea of a cool soak sounds like heaven ] Let’s hurry and get changed. There’s still some time before dinner. [` before she heads back to her own room, she pauses in the doorway, turning back to the younger girl ] I’m leaving the cookies for you, but don’t eat them all at once, okay? [` she raises her brows pointedly, as if to drive her point home, and then a grin swiftly flashes across her face ] I’ll be right back in a while. Don’t forget your towel! [` and with that last bit of chirpy advice, she’s gone ]

( ` hayi’s surprise was obvious, but she did nothing, and her lazy position was unchanged ) what, are you serious? ( ` her question was answered by a shove of the cookie container and a tiny reminder of what to bring to the pool — ) what the.

( ` once mina was out the room, her hands scrambled to find her small bag, and she unzipped it open ) well that decision was quick. ( ` hayi was excited, though, as she’s never been to the pools before. she quickly found her swimwear, a simple onesie that had tight shorts for the bottom part — hayi laughs. how childish. ) i’m going to wait for mina. i’d look stupid in this.

( ` she packs the other things, including soap, shampoo, two towels, and extra clothes ; she eats another cookie, nibbling on its edges while waiting for her unnie. )

the mass of students crowding the stairways lead you to take refuge in a bathroom stall on the second floor, a position you refuse to give up even as the thrashing and screaming from beyond the door grows. you’re safe, you assume--they’ll never find you in here. but the sound of the door being broken down has you cringing--tense--as a growl reverberates through the entire restroom. your options are limited, what do you do? do you engage head on or do you risk injury and jump out of the window?

it was a matter of choice — something hayi has never had problems with before.

her heartbeat rivaled the sound of a hummingbird’s flapping wings. the loud bang of the door sends her nerves on fire, and she’s afraid, eyes filled with panic and surprise. 

and for the first time, she swears. “fuck,” her mind doesn’t work — possibilities run down the metaphorical drain. the pounding doesn’t stop, and she knew that the thin wall is already in pieces.

her legs were now on the closed seat of the toilet bowl, and she thanks the heavens for her light clothes —

the dark ink that was splattered in strokes by her shoulder blade was her given power, right?

she pushes the door open, startling the monster behind her, and she runs to the window, feet losing the ballet flats she chose to wear, but they find the ledge of said window, as hayi pushes herself outside —

"i’m gonna fucking die." her hands clutched the little gap, and she willed herself to grow wings (well, what the shit, how did this work, anyway?). 

a searing pain hit her spine, and it crawled upwards, leaving a trail of red in its wake. something glowed behind her, and she could feel feathers sprouting from her back, and she screams — it’s too much, she thinks, and she lets go.

the wings grew from her small back, and she could feel them, weird as it was, and the pain was gone — the shards from the window left a good number of cuts on her, both deep and not, but she survived. 

the constant flapping, however, was tiring, and the sight below was sickening — dead monsters and humans were everywhere, and she found her refuge in the middle of the maze.

the unclear heads and dull skies mark the beginning and end of a sunday. wasn't it supposed to be clear and happy? like a dream?

hayi could only say that this was far from a dream.

hopes and dreams could easily be crushed by a word. lives were hanging by a thin red thread, and they were all just tiny specks compared to the oblivion that awaits.

this was reality.

perfection is overrated, imperfection underrated. she is both, for she is human -- he is, too. and maybe we are all strong on the outside, but inside is a different story. pain and happiness mingle inside us, creating a unique combination that is only for one.

her eyes are downcast once he states a sentence, but her resolve barely cracks -- "i'll try. i really will."

expectations were something hayi avoided. promises were things she abhorred. but there were exceptions to every rule, and hayi was not truly a rule abider. "i know i can't fix people -- you can't," she says, admitting her mistake, "but i sure as hell will try to at least help."

the flicker of her hope wavers, but the thought of making the world a little better lights up the room, and her eyes are up again.
