DYK that's was the point of the game? It was invented by Eleanor Abbott for children hospitalized with polio. The disease would effect mobility among other things so Candyland focused instead on bright colors and engaging illustrations rather than complicated gameplay to encourage the imagination of bedbound children. [Text ID: 1. #so when I was in schooling for power plant work #my applied electrical theory instructor told us about this thing his crew had #called The Load Toad #who was a totemic frog statue that was long ago bought for the plant #and displayed over the switchboard for all the distributd loads (hence the name)

#apparently The Load Toad was a force everyone in the electrical division sincerely believed needed to be appeased #and the ritual for doing so involved the blood of a virgin (easy to get in a nuclear power plant tbh) and chicken bones #you'd burn the bones in a burning bowl after splashing them with the virginal sacrifice

#ANYWAYS apparently one time they got a new head who was either devout Methodist or Mormon I forget #and he made them stop like all of that with firing threats and criminal threats too #then every day for a month 4 loads would randomly inexplicably fail #at first he blamed the men for acting out the Toad's vengeance #but after babysitting down in the pit himself he could see that all the failures were borderline miraculous and impossible to anticipate

#so without admitting his wrong he just threw a kfc bucket full of bones into the breakroom and curtly said "just make it stop" #moral of the story I actually agree with this sentiment #prev [left arrow]

I love how Zohran Mamdani is wearing a suit everywhere. And if he has anything else he puts it ON TOP of the suit. A basketball jersey. A high-vis vest. All worn over the suit. He’s like the mayor character in a cartoon who’s always dressed as The Mayor. If I didn’t know who he was and he biked past me in NYC I’d be like holy shit was that the mayor

Not to bring the serious to a very fun post, but this reaction is exactly what Mamdani is working for with his image, because in a very real way the most effective way for him to be The Mayor is if he looks like The Mayor.

This is a man who is VIOLENTLY aware that when it comes to conservatives, he is a Muslim first, a Brown Man second, an Immigrant third, a Socialist fourth, and a human a very distant fifth, if considered at all. He was also a young adult during the Obama Years and will have seen Republicans rip Obama to shreds for wearing a tan suit instead of a dark one and use literally ANY excuse they could to try and degrade his image.

Despite the fact that a mayor who wears a T-shirt and jeans might "seem more approachable" in the eyes of the average American, Zohran Mamdani knows that someone with his profile fundamentally cannot get away with that the way his White colleagues can. He has instead put in the effort to look professional and BE approachable, because not only does it make it easier for him to reach and represent his constituents, it forces everyone, including both his opponents and establishment Democrats, to engage with the work he is doing instead of judging his image. The fact that he is always seen in a suit and is recognisably The Mayor is, while also something he has fun with, a deliberate choice to ensure he is as inarguably A Professional Politician To Be Taken Seriously. The added humour of e.g. the hi-vis is a bonus, only achievable because he works so hard to Look Like The Mayor.

Intelligent alien species based on bugs but specifically those moths that don’t have mouths and only live for a week after they pupate. This species’ whole conscious life is actually in the larval phase; larvae are the ones considered people, larvae are the ones with conscious and complex brains who build society, and each instar of the larva is treated as a different phase of life. Larvae become emotionally and socially and cognitively mature without ever becoming sexually mature. When they pupate, they metamorphose into something different and strange and close to mindless, with no mouth and no digestive system, whose only instincts are to mate and then quickly die. Metamorphosis is treated, functionally, like a person’s death, and the imago phase is a kind of proto-afterlife of majestic flight and the continuation of the species. Birth and death inextricably intertwined. Sex is not something people do during their lives, it’s a thing that is done as an imago after you’ve passed on from your life but before you return to the soil in death. Resultant eggs are collected by family members to raise. I think this would be fun.

Side note: polonium-210 is a very dangerous isotope, however it "does not pose a radiation hazard when kept outside the body", as the alpha particle it emits have very little penetration power and cannot pierce even the outer layers of dead skin. It has still killed countless people, though, not because of children's rings, but because of tobacco. Polonium latches onto and concentrates in tobacco leaves, leading to heavy smokers being exposed to more radiation than survivors of the Chernobyl disaster.

It's always wild to me seeing comments about different toxins like this on information about random things in the past, but it's never discussed when it comes to cigarettes.

some time ago i thrifted a decorative pillowcase specifically because it had cranes with pretty wings on it. the other day while going through my patterned fabrics i came across one that had these big flowers with a matching style -> paired the two fabrics to make this kind of drawn-looking cute little outfit. and because i don't like patterning, any time i make a cute little outfit i need to make an entire doll to sew & glue it on.
