Thandie Newton #blacklivesmatter (edited to add T-shirt link)
Hi. I’m Spike. I’ve been living in Austin since 1991. Things have changed a whole lot here since I arrived. Currently it’s estimated that 110 people per day are moving here. To be clear– I begrudge no individual their desire and right to live in this town. Like so many other people, I came from somewhere else, too. That said, I have been raising my volume rather exponentially to (try to) match the exponential bullshit that has come with too much change too fast. I’m hardly alone. It’s pretty impossible these days to have a conversation that doesn’t involve the hellish traffic situation and the explosive real estate market. The utter disregard for planning and infrastructure demonstrated by the greedy powers that be is the very definition of disheartening. The corporate tax breaks are disgusting, a disgustingness that is magnified by the growing tax burden of those of us just trying to survive.Â
To wit– yesterday TCAD released their latest appraisals. My little East Side house– at least according to those assessor assholes– jumped $40,000 in value in the past year. I know I know– what a great FWP to have, to be sitting on a house that is suddenly, by my standards, worth a fucking fortune. But here’s the thing: like so many old Austinites, I am not driven by a desire to be wealthy. I came here on a whim and I stayed here because I found so many like-minded, huge-hearted, taco-fanatical badasses. This city existed far more on love than cash for a very long time.
People tell me to quit my bitching, change happens, be glad for what I have. You know what I say to that? Fuck You. Oops. Did I say that out loud? Yes yes, I know change happens. I’m not an idiot. But the change happening now is so hinged on greed, such a desire by financial fat cats who couldn’t care less about displacing those of us who truly consider this place home, not just some weekend adult playground. They are goose-slaying assholes who do not understand the golden eggs they so desire will no longer exist once they push out all those who made Austin such a desirable place just by being who they are.
I am being squeezed out of my home. It might take another five years or ten but the day is coming when I will be FORCED to sell. I have no idea where I’ll go. I will be so sad to leave this place that has been so good to me. But unless something changes radically– and it won’t– I’ll eventually turn over the keys to my beloved place to someone who thinks paying $6,000 a year in taxes is nothing. I know that wherever I wind up, I’ll be fine. It’ll take some adjusting, but I’ll figure it out. I am sad that my son, who grew up in this town, will never be able to afford to own even a tiny home here. And thinking about all this sad change, I decided to start yet another blog. I’m going to unroll it over the next few weeks. I’m going to take you on a tour of My Austin and show you all the places I’ve lived in my 24 years as an Austinite. I’m going to tell you (to the best of my memory) the rent I paid “back then.” And I’m going to show you what these places are currently valued at in this insane market.Â
I’m still in the thinking stages of this project. I was going to announce it later but in light of TCAD’s Big Bullshit Reveal yesterday, I decided to let you all know now what’s up. I’m thinking I will probably just do a set number of posts– one or two about each place I lived. But if it turns out interest merits more than that, perhaps I’ll invite y’all to send in your pictures and stories.
I know that this little blog is not going to undo the insanity. I know I’m spitting in the wind. But what I want people to know is that this housing thing is about way more than money. We aren’t just losing our houses. We are losing our personal histories, the places we celebrated our milestones, the neighborhoods where we raised our families. We are being robbed. No amount of money can make up for that loss and that grief. I’ll post my first housing story soon. Meanwhile, thank you for tuning in. Oh, and that picture up above? That’s me standing in front of 502 Park Blvd in Hyde Park. It’s not the house I lived in there– that house was demolished last year (which you can read about here). It was replaced with this motherfucking monstrosity that went for nearly a million bucks recently. See what I mean? FUCKING INSANE.Â
Meet Nicole
20 minute AMRAP
400m run
max pull ups
The bad: 6 rounds, 41 pullups. wow. low.
The not too bad: first round of pullups was 16. A PR, although it makes me wonder why I only did 5 on the first round of 'I AM'... hmm
AMRAP again
First, back squats 3-3-3-3-3
Last set was at 245. Failed (first rep not deep enough, second rep couldn't make it up). I believe this is where I failed last time - I should probably spend some time at 235 instead of jumping from 225 up to 245.
Then, a 12 minute AMRAP of:
3 HSPU
6 Power cleans (155/105)
9 box jumps (24/20)
4 rounds, plus the HSPU, Power cleans and 1 box jump.
Felt like I was moving slow, but I was happy overall. The cleans weren't terrible although they were definately slow. My form was poor in the middle until I tried to do more of a jump and less of a 'bend the arms' to rack the weight. HSPU were against an abmat... or actually short of an abmat. May be mental, but I feel like I lost some range of motion in that b/c I didn't get to work anything overhead for about 3 solid months this year. Just getting into that again and I like it.Â
Cindy - April Benchmark
20 minute AMRAP
5 pullups + 10 pushups + 15 squats
14 rounds + 5 pullups + 7 pushups
I've improved steadily in this (tested 6 and 3 months ago) even though the increases haven't been super dramatic. I'm a little bummed about that fact but happy that it's going in the right direction anyway. I noticed today that I was able to at least hang from the bar in order to get the 5 pullups for the majority of rounds even if I had to swing a little extra. I did drop from the bar for the last few rounds though. Maybe next time I'll finally get to 15.
a weakness
more specifically, one weakness out of many.
5 rounds (!)
500m row
21 swings (16/24)
42 double unders (or 84 singles)
Really, I was kind of pleased with my double unders. I knew there was no sense in trying to do them all 'rx' so I sprinkled them in and I was able to hit more than a few. On the last two rounds I went with just singles and was able to knock those out easily.
I also notice that the little bit of concentrated effort I've put into kicking up into a handstand has helped. I'm not even attempting to do a walk yet, but I was able to come a lot closer to having my legs extended all the way up which is a vast improvement over last week. I only spent about 30 minute total on the movement over the weekend.
Randomness
Two seemingly unrelated workouts today, but I guess they always are.
Front Squat (3-3-3-3-3)
Because of time, and because my partner had never done these before, I only got to do 4 rounds. My last set was at 215 I think (maybe 205 - I forgot). Can't believe I don't remember. Oh well, felt like I had a little more in me.
4 rounds:
200m run + 25 pushups + 15 toes to bar
Finished 3 rounds, plus run, plus 4 pushups before our 10 minute cap. Felt ok, but still a shadow behind Craig.
Fran for the first time
I've never done Fran before. After today, I can say I've never 'finished' Fran.
I came in just around the 12 minute cap, but I had a few bad reps on the second round of pullups
I didn't expect to be that slow. Now sure that happened
Total, part 2
Deadlift. 315 was 'almost' easy... felt relatively smooth anyway. I jumped to 325 and didn't even budge it. I think I can do it, but I felt my form slipping and honestly, it's not worth it to me to figure out if that's my max.Â
Total, part 1
Back Squat and Press today.
Back squat was 255 - up 10 pounds from three months ago BUT down 10 pounds from about a year ago. Don't ask me, I don't know.
Press was down to 95. I'm not quite sure my wrist was to blame, but it kind of hurt and I didn't push it. Not sure what I'm capable of. I thought my previous PR was 120, but a glance at my sheet shows I hit 130 last time. Wow, I had no idea. It would be nice to get there again.
@ Central
Just one round today....
800m run
30 pullups
30 dumbell thrusters R arm (35/25)
30 dumbell thrusters L arm
30 pullups
800m run
18:00 flat. I might have gone a little short on the pullups. 29 and 28 to be exact. Lazy. Last 800 took me 4 minutes. wow. Glad I could do the pullups though; I haven't had those in a WOD since 'the mishap'. I AM only has 45 so I know I'm capable of them. I forced myself into sets of 3 at a minimum and I stuck with it. Probably slow, but felt ok. Just need to verify that I can handle 135# hang cleans before next Saturday's mayhem. If not, ZT said I could do 95 and I think I can handle that pretty easily already.
Christine
3 rounds: 500m row 12 bodyweight deadlifts 21 box jumps 12:15 @ 175. Did this last week at home. Took about 15 seconds more at 180#. Today I lost 15-30 seconds waiting for a rower (during which ZT had us hold a plank?). Today I did all the deadlifts without dropping the bar, although I did pause at the top once per round.
Hang Squat Cleans: 3-3-3-3-3 ended at 135. weight wasn't a problem. wrist was, but it was an imrpovement from not being able to do 115 last week.... either that or I've gotten better at compensating. 10 minute AMRAP 2 HSPU 4 Burpees 8 KB Swings (32/24) 7 rounds even. HSPU... I wasn't sure I'd be able to do them (against the wall down to a plate). I did it to a 45, but only a few were good to that depth. I had worked up to a 25# plate late last year. wrist did hurt, so in all I should probably be glad I was even able to kick into the handstand.
Christine @ home
12:34 @ 180
5 rounds 3x shuttle runs 15 wall balls (14/20) 21 hip extensions 10:06
Elizabeth
A 'classic' girl workout, mixing relatively heavy barbell movements with challenging gymnastics movements. The trick to the best times is a high strength / weight ratio ... something I think everyone gravitates towards once you follow the regimen. Some are just closer than others... the elite can finish this in 5 minutes. Not I. Not I. 21-15-9 full squat cleans (135/95) ring dips I did this RX in August and got cut at the 12 minute mark about halfway through. Today I really wanted to go RX, but the weight was too much to bear on the bar and on the rings. I tried 115, but I felt pain on the first rep so I dropped to 95 and used a band for the ring dips. I finished at 9:41, but still feel the effects on my wrist and still wish I could have tried it at 135. Some days I have to remind myself that this is. just. excercise.
