So in my efforts to write fic about Alastor at his radio job in the 1920s I went looking for old radio station schedules, found that the schedules used to be published in newspapers, and went digging.
And I found the schedules, but here’s what else I found: the Indianapolis Times had an entire section dedicated to news about the radio. Just in the first two pages of the issue I got the above picture from: an article on new stations being created, a New Year’s look at all the technological developments made in the last year and the ones expected for the coming year, ads upon ads from companies selling radio receivers, a PSA asking the public to snitch on stations that aren’t broadcasting on the correct wavelength, an article about radio’s increasing popularity in Great Britain, an article about trying to send radio signals underground…
People were flipping their shit over radio. Shit was getting flipped left, right, and center. A whole section of the paper dedicated to the radio.
Which puts The Radio Demon’s influence in the ‘30s into some perspective, doesn’t it? He’s basically being declared god of the medium that people were saying things like this about:
“… the possibility of anything in connection with radio.”
They’re just like “oh yeah this technology is omnipotent and it belongs to that guy there.”
Alastor was riding the wave of radio-mania as it crested, died long before it began to crash, and got given radio superpowers when he died. It’s no wonder he acts like he’s all that and a bag of chips—and no wonder he sneers at the avatars of modern technology like Vox. What do jokers like him know? They weren’t on the radio in the 20s.
