I often think about how Hawke has to push limits that the people who revere him never see. They celebrate, even crown him, not knowing they'd brand him murderer & maleficar for what he's done. I haven't finished much lately, but this lovely, terrible man has my heart.

i guess i implicitly answered my own question there but, yeah, it seems very possible to me that branka sort of sees hespith as the thing that is going to save her from whatever she finds so miserable and intolerable about being married to oghren and orzammar society more generally. and branka's been made a paragon and people worship her for being a paragon but, while that's flattering, while she likes the power over others it gives her, none of this actually feels meaningful and emotionally fulfilling to branka - she think the orzammar sociopolitical rat race is a snooze. and having this affair with oghren's cousin, seeing her own dissatisfaction and desperation for escape mirrored in hespith (who likewise sees branka as the thing that's going to save her from the orzammar heteronormative arranged marriage grinder) is satisfying for a while. but then hespith is happy and branka still isn't. and they go into the Deep Roads and somewhere down in the underworld is something, is an anvil, that feels like maybe it will bring branka the meaning and satisfaction her life is missing. and because she's ruthless, she's fully willing to sacrifice everything else she's tried up to that point (including hespith) on the altar of trying to get it.

I really am tempted to write a Doctor Who fanfiction called Janitor What where the main premise is (while being a pretty major plot hole himself) another timelord who was friends with The Doctor and The Master when they were young on Gallifrey. Only, instead of running in fear or being driven completely mad when forced to stare into The Untempered Schism, he is compelled to clean time and is captive to this illusion that time doesn't have to be so wibbly or wobbly at all. He sort of works as the timelord who actually does his job. Only issue is that his two best friends have gone absolutely off their rockers and he spends most of his time cleaning up their messes. In other words, The Janitor is who patches up plotholes. How did Pete Tyler know to catch Rose in Doomsday? The Janitor. What ever happened to The Valeyard? The Janitor. How are there no Reapers before or after Father's Day? You can thank The Janitor because that's his daleks baby. And The Janitor always shows up in this shipping crate that says Fragile on the side and he's got a tool belt of bullshit like an Ultraviolet Spanner, a Gammaray Hammer, or the Sub-o-matic plunger. Of course, the even better gimmick of it all is when he lands and is asked who the hell he is. I mean it is the very last place one expects to have hired a janitor. Which always prompts a mind boggled, "Janitor? What?"
