in high school I started my first real relationship, but neither of us were vocally out. one of my friends was a sweet dude whose parents had been missionaries. back then, he was easily scandalized by gay shit, and had somehow not noticed that all of his friends at school were gay. it was pretty obvious to absolutely everyone else, but this poor kid… this poor kid had no idea.

shortly after we started dating, I was sitting with my partner during lunch. we were holding hands and I was gently stroking the back of their hand with my thumb. my oblivious friend came over to hang out and sat down across from us. he saw us holding hands, and so he… he… he thought it was just the hip the thing to do? the next thing we knew, he was holding my partner’s OTHER hand and stroking it with his thumb while we sat there stiffly, petrified by overwhelming social awkwardness.

I love him and he’s a good guy but I really, really, really, really want to know just what the fuck he thought was happening.
