Joan Baez performing It Ain't Me Babe in Stockholm, Sweden in 1966
hair by nikki nelms & photography by adrienne raquel
for the thesis i covered a lot of women’s engagement with the fairy tale. i read a lot of anne sexton, angela carter, i spent like two weeks reading everything i could find from catherynne m valente only to end up not using it.
but the one retelling that makes me cry every time without fail is the color master by aimee bender. the whole collection is worth it, but that story in particular you MUST read.

dont trace reference images. dont even LOOK at reference images. in fact, don't ever look at anything that exists in the world, in person or in photos or in videos, even when you're not drawing, because you will still be able to use the memories of what something looks like as a reference when you're drawing it later. yes that includes yourself. destroy all the mirrors in your house. don't look down at your hands or feet. don't look. close your eyes. close them tight. forget everything. it's okay, embrace the darkness. just forget.

the most important virtues for the young woman are as follows: time theft, selfishness, orgasms, irreverence to authority, sacrilegious behavior, a questioning mind, and eating regular meals.
Dame Joanna Lamond Lumley (b. 1946).
The photos was taken as part of the promotion of the British television series "The New Avengers", which aired in the late 1970s.
I love love love saying "I scavenged a working microwave in the boylands" but nobody ever knows the reference and it breaks my heart
like, the first time I ever saw this I laughed so hard I started choking on spit but it's just not the kind of thing you can share with the average person in your life. this world is so cruel
