"who’s your target audience?"
me and the five people in my head who get it
Val has never had a home. He had a house once, sure, and various little shelters, but never a home. Never someplace warm and safe and welcoming. Until Rosie. She is his home; his safe place; his everything. There is nothing in this or any other world that can tear them apart.
“I missed you too. I thought about you.”
Thoughts of Rosie were a lifeline on the very worst of those days; a breath of air when he was drowning in pain and blood. She clings to him now, as if he is the one who can guide her safely to shore; as if he doesn’t stumble as she guides them towards her bedroom.
He is a broken thing; battered and bruised and weeping blood from a wound on his side that refuses to mend itself. Fresh scars litter his tattooed skin, obscuring artwork and older scars like ink spilled across a page. There’s a certain hollowness to his cheeks that was never there before. Mind, body, soul; all utterly ruined.
But now all is well. He’s home.
The smile he gives her as he settles into bed is genuine enough to hurt.
There is no way sleep finds her tonight. She's going to be staring at him through all of the evening. It still feels like a hallucination. Everything feels unreal and she feels unmoored. The careful walls she built up to make sure she keeps going, and going, and going without crumbling are getting washed out from beneath her. She has mourned this life, and many others, but it feels like a second chance. She slips in beside him, and she finds there are too many thoughts in her head to settle on just one thing to ask at first. So, she wraps an arm around him again and pulls him close for the first time in years and she can feel herself tearing up. "I thought about you too," she says finally. "How did you get back?" And then a beat as she realizes that could be the very wrong question. "You don't have to tell me -- it can wait."
03. flinches at sudden movement from the other.
04. presses their back against the wall with eyes darting around the room.
Rosie stepped back, stock still as if caught in the sight lines of something dangerous. To her it was. His fear weighed heavy as an anchor on her chest, so she stood as recognizable as she could -- her shoulders back and straight, her head directed to the other side of the room like she was giving a stray dog its space.
She walked directly away from him, keeping their distance but also allowing her full sight of him even if her eyes could not see him fully. Maybe it was foolish, keeping her eyes off him, after all he had been trapped for far too long, how could she expect him to remember her?
"Val," she said, turning her back to him now, and then twisting so he could see her from the side. All she wanted him to know was that she trusted him not to attack while she was vulnerable, and show that even if she could see him she would not take away his support. "Val do you see me?" With a sudden surge of bravery she screwed her eyes shut and pushed her hand forward towards him in what she knew may be to quick a gesture, but she reconciled herself to that.
"Please, Val, I won't do anything. Promise."

Training Grounds & Bruised Pride
❛ You’re getting better… but not good enough to beat me. ❜
❛ That swing would’ve taken my head off if you weren’t distracted staring at me. ❜
❛ You call that a punch? Try again. Harder. ❜
❛ Careful—if you keep touching me like that, I’ll forget this is just training. ❜
❛ You’re supposed to disarm me, not pin me down. ❜
❛ If you wanted to get me on the ground, there are easier ways. ❜
❛ Oh, so now you’re blushing? Didn’t expect that from you. ❜
❛ Don’t hold back just because I’m close. Hit me. ❜
❛ You like this too much to call it practice. ❜
❛ You’re bleeding. …and you’re smiling about it? ❜
Clash & Proximity
❛ Stop moving—if you do, I’ll let you go. Maybe. ❜
❛ You’re enjoying this way more than you should. ❜
❛ I could feel your heartbeat when I had you pinned. ❜
❛ You’re supposed to block, not get distracted every time I breathe. ❜
❛ Funny how you only get serious when I get close. ❜
❛ Is this still a fight, or are we pretending it is? ❜
❛ If you wanted to touch me, you could’ve just asked. ❜
❛ That smirk’s going to get you in trouble. ❜
❛ You’re trembling. Adrenaline or something else? ❜
❛ You’ve got a death wish standing that close. Or maybe just a bad idea. ❜
Verbal Sparring & Tension
❛ What’s wrong—afraid I’ll beat you? Or that I won’t stop when I do? ❜
❛ Keep taunting me and I might forget to pull my punches. ❜
❛ You talk too much. Let’s see if I can change that. ❜
❛ Didn’t realize arrogance was one of your fighting styles. ❜
❛ Don’t act so calm—you’re shaking. I can feel it. ❜
❛ You like pushing me, don’t you? ❜
❛ Admit it—you only challenged me so you’d have an excuse to touch me. ❜
❛ I thought you were dangerous. Turns out you’re just distracting. ❜
❛ You keep saying this is training, but you keep looking at my mouth. ❜
❛ Try again. And stop pretending you don’t want to. ❜
Pinned & Breathless
❛ You should really get off me… unless you plan to stay there. ❜
❛ You gonna move, or are you enjoying the view? ❜
❛ You’re heavy. …Don’t you dare move. ❜
❛ Your hand’s still on me. Not that I mind. ❜
❛ Is this where you finally admit you like losing to me? ❜
❛ You can let go now. …anytime. ❜
❛ I said training, not straddling. ❜
❛ If anyone walks in right now, I’m blaming you. ❜
❛ Don’t look at me like that. You’ll make me forget we’re supposed to be fighting. ❜
❛ I thought this was about technique, not temptation. ❜
Aftermath & Smolder
❛ You’ve got blood on your lip. …Here, let me— ❜
❛ You hit harder than you should. I liked it. ❜
❛ I should hate how close that was. But I don’t. ❜
❛ You’re shaking. Here—catch your breath. ❜
❛ For someone who swears they don’t care, you sure looked worried when I fell. ❜
❛ You didn’t have to pull me that close. ❜
❛ I’ve fought a lot of people. None of them ever looked at me like that. ❜
❛ Are we still sparring, or… something else? ❜
❛ Tell me you didn’t feel that too. ❜
❛ Maybe next time, we skip the weapons. ❜

high lonesome taken from the 1950 film.
give me my rifle.
it’s funny how haunted and deathly that thing can look when you know what’s inside.
you’re not fit to go running around loose. you’ll get yourself hurt feeling this way.
better come with me. see how things look from the house.
you can’t tell what a kid like this is liable to do.
consider the lilies of the field, how they grow.
what was your theory, shooting out that window?
this is healing all right.
you better get your hands up.
i ain’t gonna wait on you hand and foot.
bring the lamp closer.
(name), honey, won’t you just listen to me?
boy. you’re gonna do odd jobs around the place on foot.
it’s almost morning. i can see a little streak of mustard in the east.
you ready to talk?
those strangers followed me.
you got a right to your own.
you ain’t gonna get through in the teeth of winter.
the boy has the right to speak.
maybe that answers your question.
yeah, it’s funny. but it’s a mean kind of funny if you’re in my place.
the scarecrow’s been wearing it.
well, this road has a bad name.
stand still, will you?
help the boy.
why, this kid’s crazy.
everybody’s always giving both barrels around here. trouble is our home.
i didn’t know where i was at first when i come to.
there’s something hanging on this kid’s shirttail like grim death to a tax lien.
ain’t there no way to get rid of you?
for heaven’s sakes, come in here.
it’s the strangest thing. it’s gone now. for a minute there, i never felt in worse danger in my life.
keep your eyes peeled now.
there are two strangers there, watching the house.
who did that to you?
then shut up and sit down.
you’ve eaten the barbecue. let’s dance.
now go to your room. i have all the contention i can stomach without a lot of sass spread on it.
it just so happens that i’ve got my guitar right back here.
look for yourself.
stay in the light, no matter what.
you’ll be interested.
oh, that’s what makes you so jumpy maybe.
from now on, he’ll never be without friends. or without a home.
hey, sonny. hat’s for town.
if you shoot before i tell you, i’ll kill you in the same half second.
draw back a bit, son.
but i’ve got to stop and try this one more thing.
why you cantankerous old mosshorn.
cut one more hunk of that poor excuse for bread.
you can’t hold me here.
you’re leaving your horse.
i believe you but nobody else will.
we get worse around here every day.
[ first kiss ]
She is twenty something and they are stuffed in whatever janitorial supply closet surrounded by the strong scent of bleach and every other cleaning supply under the sun. Their breathing is sharp, labored, and purposely suppressed in the hope they do not draw more attention. It is a tight space, made tighter by her shield around them, her hand gripping his wrist to keep the connection of it.
Rosie cannot see much but the dark outline of his horns at the top of her vision and the edges of his body limned in the softest purple glow from her shield. If their pursuers find them they will not be going without a fight. It is an effort to keep it up after the skirmish before. Her head hurts with the concentration, she is fairly sure that her nose is bleeding.
All the same, she looks up and grins at him through the dark, squeezes his wrist like she can assure him that she knows what she is doing.
And, suddenly, she is sixteen again and they are both in a closet at Jesse Bill's house. It's darker there, nearly black, but she still has his wrist in her hand, and still looks up at him with a grin like she knows anything. The dark is permission, a secret keeper. She tugs at his wrist and surges forward through the distance and is thankful to find his lips meet hers halfway.
It took them nearly five minutes to get there, but when the door is pulled open it's been a good two and they are barely vertical with the way she has to pull him down to meet her. She is flushed and winded when the door opens on them, spilling a sickly white light into their small sanctuary, her hand still wrapped around his wrist.
She is twenty-something when the fluorescents nearly blind them as the door swings violently open and she bares her teeth like a thing gone feral, but she holds to him the same as always.

ACQUAINTANCES
❛ I swear I’ve seen you before, probably in a dream, or a mugshot. ❜
❛ Is this the part where we shake hands or just nod awkwardly? ❜
❛ You’re not as scary as people said. Yet. ❜
❛ We’ve met before, right? ❜
❛ I will forget your name in five minutes but I will never forget your aura. ❜
❛ Sorry, I don’t think I caught your name last time. ❜
❛ You seem familiar. Do I know you from somewhere? ❜
❛ Sorry, I’m terrible with names. I’ll probably call you “Hey you” forever. ❜
❛ So are we strangers, or is this the part where we overshare? ❜
❛ If we end up on a group project together, I’m not doing the PowerPoint. ❜
❛ So… what do you do? ❜
❛ I’ve heard about you, but this is our first time talking. ❜
❛ I don’t know much about you, honestly. ❜
❛ Wow, you talk. I thought you were just a background extra. ❜
❛ How do you already look like you’re over this conversation? ❜
❛ Don’t take this the wrong way, but I can’t tell if we’d get along or kill each other. ❜
❛ It’s weird finally putting a face to the name. ❜
❛ If you had to pick one Pokémon that describes your vibe, which one is it? ❜
❛ Do you come here often? ❜
❛ Oh cool, another NPC come to give me a side quest. ❜
❛ You look like you have main character energy but, like, season one when everything’s still a mess. ❜
❛ Small world, huh? ❜
❛ Sorry if I seem awkward, I’m not great with strangers. ❜
❛ You look like you know what you’re doing. ❜
❛ Wait, is this the start of a rom-com or a crime documentary? ❜
❛ You seem like someone who knows where the snacks are. ❜
❛ I have no idea who you are but I respect your vibe. ❜
❛ Are you new around here? ❜
❛ It’s nice to finally meet in person. ❜
❛ We don’t really know each other yet, but… I think we could get along. ❜
❛ Well, that was an interesting first impression. ❜
❛ Do you mind if I sit here? ❜
❛ I feel like I should know more about you than I do. ❜
❛ So… do we pretend we don’t know each other, or do we pretend we do? ❜
❛ Wait, are you the person I thought was a coat rack last week? ❜
❛ Oh, you’re taller than I imagined in my head. ❜
❛ You don’t look like a serial killer. That’s a good start. ❜

❛ You always make the day a little better. ❜
❛ That was fun, we should do it again sometime. ❜
❛ Want to grab something to eat? My treat. ❜
❛ You’re so easy to talk to. ❜
❛ Honestly, I didn’t expect us to get along this well. ❜
❛ Why do we always end up in weird situations together? ❜
❛ If we had a sitcom, it’d be canceled after one episode. ❜
❛ I don’t know if we’re friends or just two people who roast each other a lot. ❜
❛ You make me laugh so much it’s suspicious. ❜
❛ I can’t believe we just spent three hours talking about nothing. ❜
❛ It’s been a while! I missed this. ❜
❛ You always know how to cheer me up. ❜

❛ Let’s do something spontaneous. ❜
❛ Don’t worry, I already told everyone we’re a package deal. ❜
❛ You know I’d never let anyone else see me like this, right? ❜

❛ Thanks for always being there. ❜
❛ I don’t laugh like this with anyone else. ❜
❛ I feel like I can be myself with you. ❜

you have finally lost your senses.
this venture is impossible.
the only way to achieve the impossible is to believe it is possible.
that kind of thinking could ruin you.
the nightmare, again?
do you think i've gone around the bend?
you're mad. bonkers, off your head.
if you get frightened, you can always wake up.
doubt they'll notice if we never arrive.
who's to say what is proper?
to me, a corset is like a codfish.
i'm sorry. i'm tired, i didn't sleep well last night.
it's always the same, ever since i can remember.
don't most people have different dreams?
there. you're beautiful.
there. you're beautiful. now, can you manage a smile?
at last. we thought you'd never arrive.
[ name ] is waiting to dance with you.
i hope you don't think i've taken advantage of your misfortunes.
do you ever tire of quadrille?
i think you'll do best to keep your visions to yourself.
i was wondering what it would be like to fly.
[ name ], meet me under the gazebo in ten minutes.
but now you've brought it up, you have to tell me.
everyone went through so much effort to keep it a secret.
i don't know if i want to marry [ name ].
shall we take a leisurely stroll through the garden, just you & me?
what an odd thing to say.
i couldn't be more interested, but you'll have to excuse me.
i think i'm going mad.
i don't know. i'm confused, i need time to think.
me? but i'm not the one who's sneaking around.
i think i ... i need a moment.
i am not convinced.
how is that for gratitude?
who are you, if i might ask?
the question is, who are you?
what do you mean by that? i ought to know who i am.
wait, this is my dream. i'm going to wake up now & you'll all disappear.
that's odd. pinching usually does the trick.
did you steal them?
it looks like you ran afoul of something with wicked claws.
well, i'd better have a look.
i'll be fine as soon as i wake up.
what do you call yourself?
all i want to do is wake up from this dream.
i was obliged to kill time until your return.
we simply must commence with the slaying & such.
all this talk of blood & slaying has put me off my tea.
what happened that day was not my fault.
you ran out on them to save your own skin.
what's wrong with you, [ name ]? you used to be the life of the party.
would you like to join us? you're late for tea!
i'm not slaying anything. i don't slay, so put it out of your mind.
wait! you can't leave me here.
you're not the same as you were before.
you were much more ... muchier. you've lost your muchness.
it's not a pretty story.
that is not foretold.
i've been told what i must do & who i must be.
i'll decide where it goes from here.
i make the path.
i've come to you, hoping you would understand what it's like.
and who is this lovely creature?
you're too soft.
the trees seem sad... have you been speaking with them?
rest now. you've done well.
is it not better to be feared than loved?
i'm frightened, [ name ]. i don't like it in here, it's terribly crowded.
you're entirely bonkers. but i'll tell you a secret; all of the best people are.
that's better, you look like yourself again.
why is it you're always too small or too tall?
i don't take orders from big, clumsy, galumphing—
why haven't you mentioned this?
i believe this belongs to you.
i thought we'd settled this.
i suggest you keep a sword on hand.
it is far better to be feared than loved.
it's against my vows to harm any living creature.
here i am, still in one piece.
i would have regretted not seeing you again.
you know what tomorrow is, don't you?
still believe this is a dream, do you?
this has all come from my own mind.
i'm afraid you're just a figment of my imagination.
you would have to be half-mad to dream me up.
i'll miss you when i wake up.
you cannot live your life to please others. the choice must be yours.
when you step out to face that creature, you will step out alone.
nothing was ever accomplished with tears.
don't go. i need your help, i don't know what to do.
i can't help you if you don't even know who you are.
you're just as dim-witted as the first time you were here.
it wasn't a dream at all ... it was a memory.
the sword knows what it wants. all you have to do is hold onto it.
i know what you're doing. you think you can blink those pretty little eyes & i'll melt.
it is MY crown! i am the eldest!
sometimes i believe as many as six impossible things before breakfast.
so, my old foe, we meet on the battlefield once again.
you are banished. no one is to ever show you kindness.
majesty, i hope you bear me no ill will.
i do not owe you a kindness.
i'll be back again before you know it.
of course i will, how could i forget?
good lord ... are you alright?
i love you, but this is my life. i'll decide what to do with it.
i'll find something useful to do with my life.
shall we speak in my study?
perhaps you'd consider becoming an apprentice.
"You tore your stitches open, let me fix it." (any verse)
"It's okay, Val," she assures, her speech slightly slurred with exhaustion and a tinge of whatever poison managed to worm its way into her system.
He's partially right, one popped for sure, but it's a surface stitch and it's barely separating. She can get a steri-strip and it'll be as good as new. "Just get me the band aids, I don't want you playing nurse on it, it doesn't need any thread," she says, leaning heavily on him.
"Could maybe do with some water though, I need to flush the rest of this shit out. It burns."
