Ram Yadav and Shyam Yadav: Twin Success - News Paper Coverage
Ram Yadav and Shyam Yadav: Twin Success
Ram and Shyam Yadav have just realized their dreams—they have passed the Joint Entrance Exam for IIT with flying colours. Theirs is a story of grit and determination, not only on their part but also of their family which has sacrificed a lot to enable the two 18-year-old twins gain entrance into the prestigious institution.
Ram stands 267 in the ranking list in the OBC category and 2206 in the common merit list. His brother Shyam comes in at 1816 in the OBC category and 10,332 in the common merit list.
Hailing from a poor family with a sole bread-winner, their father Mr Rama Shankar Yadav is a humble school bus-driver earning a salary of just Rs. 9,500/- per month on which he had to look after three other siblings as well. The family of seven still lives in a 320 sq.ft. tenement in Bhiwandi. The success of the young Yadav twins is a clear testament of how hard work and determination can help one surmount any hardship.
Ram and Shyam were both helped in their dream by FIITJEE which gave them a 100 per cent scholarship, enabling them to pursue their studies.
They used to spend around three hours daily travelling from their one-room tenement in Bhiwandi to FIITJEE in Thane where they used to immerse themselves in study for 8-hours daily. Their time in FIITJEE would begin at around 11 am and end at 9 pm in the night.
The boys were immensely hardworking and diligent that the FIITJEE staff took a hand in helping them forge ahead in their careers. The family, being poor, could afford the fees for only one child--Ram. But impressed by their diligence, the teachers at FIITJEE decided to contribute the entire fee for the other boy—Shyam—as well.
Now after passing the IIT entrance exam with distinction, both the twins want to pursue studies in space research. They have overcome the handicap of not possessing a computer or laptop by accessing the Internet through their mobiles.
Their interests are also extraordinary—they are interested in reading autobiographies of great personalities and scientists. They watch television, but not the usual soaps others of their age do. One will find them engrossed in the Discovery or National Geography channels. They also play a lot of chess, which, they say, keeps their brain agile and sharp. Both the twins have represented their school in chess at the taluka level.
The family is one of those rare ones which, despite their economic struggles, is putting education first for its children. One of their brothers is doing his final year in mechanical engineering and their only sister is studying in Class XII.
All Ramashankar Yadav, a bus driver, knows is that his twin sons have cleared an exam. What he cannot comprehend is that the exam in question is the JEE-Advanced and how his sons have now embarked on a path which may see the family’s fortunes undergo a sea change. “My parents only know that we have passed the exam but they don’t understand the importance of the same. For my brother and me, this is our first step towards attaining our goals. We both want to become researchers,” said Ram Yadav (18). While Ram has secured the 267 rank in the OBC category, his brother Shyam has got rank 1,816 in the same category. Born and brought up in a small slum in Bhiwandi, their father’s only aim was to earn enough to make sure his family is fed. With his monthly salary of Rs 8,000, he somehow also managed to fund the basic education of his four sons over the years. Ram and Shyam managed to score well in the Std X and XII board exams without the help of any coaching, but cracking the JEE was going to be a different ball game. “We were informed about a class where they would teach us for free if we passed their aptitude test. We both scored very well and immediately got full scholarships,” said Shyam. Both boys trained at FIITJEE. The problem for the twins, however, hasn’t ended with passing the exam. While it is certain that the brothers will get through to one of the IITs, paying the hefty fees will be a Herculean task for their father. “We both want to pursue engineering, but, eventually, we want to do research in particle physics and space. At this point, we have no idea how we will be able to raise the funds for our education,” said Ram, who loves to read autobiographies of great innovators. The boys are now focusing on choosing the right field of engineering before choosing the institute. “My boys are very hardworking and have always done well in studies. But we are at a juncture where I don’t know how to help them with their future plans. Hopefully, things will fall in place,” said their father. All the Very Best for your JEE - Main, 2014

FIITJEE Mumbai Centre Wishes all the Class XII Students the Best of Luck for the Board Exams.
Parents, Do You Want Your Child To Have Triumphant Success in Board Exams? Here are 10 Things To Do
It is the law of nature that hard work, meticulous planning and scientifically done brain work are always followed by a good result.
For us Success is a Science. FIITJEE has formulated it and proved it in the arena of IIT-JEE. It’s been a record – the fact that we’ve been breaking records consecutively now for the last 20 years. Not only do we believe in producing rank and achieving numbers, but also we systematically work for the sharpening of the brain of our students, with overall personality development in order that the student be successful in whichever field he/she chooses.
Board / Final examinations are fast approaching and many students have not been able to reap the full rewards of their hard efforts because of some very small reasons. We have been observing the same, over the years, and have a few suggestions to make. These suggestions / tips, subtle in nature, if followed, will ensure that your child is able to derive maximum benefit, from the efforts which he has put in over the year, in the form of a great and triumphant result.
10 things for the triumphant success of the students are as follows:
The food habits of your child need to be regulated. Encourage your ward to have hygienic home cooked food and to avoid junk food from outside. It will be very unfortunate for one to prepare for his/her goal for a whole year and not able to transform them into marks or results due to health reasons.
The sleeping habits of your child need to be regulated. He / she should have at least seven hours of peaceful sleep. Do not let him / her sleep during the time when his / her exam is scheduled to be held. For example if the exam is scheduled for 1pm to 4pm, do not let him / her sleep during this period. Encourage him /her to study / solve problems during this period as this will tune his / her biological clock and will ensure that he / she is able to be his / her brightest and sharpest at the time of exam.
Identify and organize a study area for him/her in your home. A place which has proper light and is also airy. Make sure that he/she has a comfortable sitting posture. It should, however, not be so comfortable so as to put him/her to sleep. Ask your ward to make a clear statement of his / her goal subject wise, put them on paper and display it in the study area. Also ask him / her to display important formulae / key points in the study area which will help him / her revise at a glance.
Suggest your ward to avoid talking to friends / peers who do not share the same goal / vision as your ward.
Encourage your ward to practice breathing exercises and stretching exercises at least for 15 – 20 minutes in the morning for better concentration.
Kindly discuss his / her daily activities periodically so that you can give him / her advice. Ask your ward to have his / her doubts cleared as early as possible from his / her teachers or confidant friends.
If your ward’s exam centre is not at his / her school, visit the exam centre once in advance to be aware of the location and also of the time taken to reach the centre. Leave home well in advance of the time taken to reach the exam centre on exam days.
Put a display showing a checklist of things he / she needs to carry for his / her exam to prevent your ward from forgetting something important at home and also to be sure and confident during the exam.
Encourage your ward not to talk / interact with friends immediately prior to the exam so that his / her focus is not lost.
Also encourage your ward not to start discussing the paper immediately after the exam. This should be done after all your papers end. This is basically to prevent the negatives from affecting your child. Suppose he/she does a paper which according to him/her went fine and immediately after the exam someone tells him/her that answers to some of the questions attempted are wrong, it’ll lead him/her to negatives thereby affecting his/her next paper.
We at FIITJEE have been committed to creating shining success stories. We’ve worked very hard in perfecting this “Science of Success”. Miracles do not happen overnight but are results of perseverance. Each child has boundless energy and potential. He/she needs the guidance and direction to focus his/her energy towards success. We stand with you at this hour and shall provide you with any and all possible assistance should you need it.
We Wish You All the Very Best for the Final Exams.

Important Guidance for all Aspirants (& their Parents) of JEE Advanced, JEE Main & XII Board
Every Year Lakhs of students appear in the JEE Main & JEE Advanced Exams to secure a seat in India's Most Prestigious Engineering Colleges especially the IITs & NITs. Almost all of these students take training from a training institute to crack these exams. The above two questions are the most vital ones that these students face while deciding to prepare for these exams.
Here is a quick summary of these two exams;
JEE Main:
On the basis of score in JEE Main and normalised score in Class XII or equivalent qualifying exam (60% & 40% weightage respectively), the Rank will be Awarded to the Students. It is this normalisation which has been at core of the controversy where Students with even 1% less marks have lost more than 3% or even 5% marks in the normalised score.
If you secure a final Rank in Top 25000 All India Rank then you have a bright chance of getting a seat in one of the NITs, IIITs & other Prestigious Engineering Colleges.
JEE Advanced:
For a Student to be eligible for JEE Advanced, one has to fullfil a dual qualification : (i) Be in the Top 20 percentile in Class XII Board Exam. (ii) Secure a Rank in Top 1.5 lac Students in JEE Main.
Even if a Student Tops JEE Advanced but is not in 20 percentile of his / her Class XII Board then he / she will not be eligible for selection.
As we can see this new selection process is very challenging & stressful for students as well as parents.
To overcome, without stress, challenges thrown by the new Selection Process based on assessment through 3 distinctly different exams i.e. XII Board, JEE Main & JEE Advanced, specialized preparation support in form of Coaching becomes essential.
A Student can have three acceptable scenarios to effectively prepare for JEE Advanced, JEE Main & for Class XII Board:
He / she should be studying in a School providing Excellent level of simultaneous or Integrated preparation for Class XII Board, JEE Main & JEE Advanced.
He / she should be studying in a Coaching Institute having a School Tie-up providing Excellent level of simultaneous or Integrated preparation for Class XII Board, JEE Main & JEE Advanced.
He / she should be studying in an Excellent School which not only ensures high marks in Class XII Board but also enables the Student to be in Top 20 percentile of the Board. In addition to this the Student should join a Coaching Institute which comprehensively prepares him / her not only for JEE Advanced but also brings a marked change in the preparation for JEE Main & Class XII Board.
Any other situation should be unacceptable to both Students & Parents. If any other situation is encountered then it is best for the Student to just focus on Class XII Board, get excellent score & prepare for JEE Advanced after Class XII.
Students & their Parents generally get confused in choosing the Right & Ideal Coaching Institute for the preparation for JEE Advanced, JEE Main & Class XII Boards.
Here are few very important points, one must be aware of and verify before choosing the Right Coaching Institute:
Ethics: You cannot be selectively Honest & Ethical and choose to be dishonest to others. For example - An Institute relying on poaching faculty from other institutes is a threat to your Child's Career.
Results: One must check & verify the Results in JEE Advanced & JEE Main(Recent & Past). It is very important to enquire & check not only a few Top Ranks but also Total Number of Selections and Ranks in Top 500, 1000, 2000, 3000 etc. Moreover, it is equally important to inquire about Class XII Board performance of it's Students. An excellent institute must also have excellent Results in KVPY & Olympiads and all Serious Students must get success in some good Competitive Exams. Join an institute with a strong history of Results at least for the last 5 Years.
Faculty: Good Faculty is the backbone of any Institute. Can an institute not capable to train its faculty train your Child Well? Highly unlikely ! It is your responsibility to find out whether the Institute does have a Large & Strong Pool of Full time Faculty Members or not. This is important in case a Faculty leaves the Institute midway so that Institute is capable of filling that vacancy with a Faculty of same Caliber & Expertise, eventually safeguarding your future.
Strong System to counter any change in Exam Pattern: Testing Pattern of IIT-JEE keeps on changing and you should make efforts to investigate whether the Institute does have an efficient & robust System to tackle unforeseen situations like these. If any change in the Exam Pattern happens midway then the Institute should have the inherent Strength, Character & Vision to counter such situation.
Overall Development: IITs have been voicing concerns about such Coaching Institutes that prepare Students much like terrorist are trained, as such Students have performed badly during their undergraduate studies. Recruitment history at IITs proves that such Students are not able to bag good jobs. In fact one IIT-JEE Topper who was trained at an institute at Kota had failed to complete even his B.Tech. A good Coaching Institute will always Strengthen & Improve the Fundamentals and IQ level of a Student. Remember, having High IQ and Strong Fundamentals are must for you to solve different types of tricky & complex problems of any Exam & is equally important to get success in any Career Stream at any stage of life.
Student - Teacher Ratio: Ideal Student to Teacher ratio is indispensable for your success. Too many Students in a class will make it unmanageable for the Faculty to give personalized attention to each and every Student. Hence you should zero in on an Institute which maintains a healthy Student to Teacher ratio thereby increasing your chances to clear your doubts and problems, then and there, rather than postponing it.Never join an institute having classes in a group of more than 50 Students.
We believe the above points help you to make a right decision for a life changing one.
Now, over to you. What other points do you think should be considered by aspirants and parents while choosing a training institute? Tell your views in the comments.
Fortunate 40 - A Social Initiative by FIITJEE to Help the Economically Deprived
Since its inception in 1992, FIITJEE has always supported meritorious and deserving students to succeed in their career goals. Students joining FIITJEE’s training programs have excelled not only in JEE Advanced (erstwhile IIT-JEE) but also in JEE Main (erstwhile AIEEE) & other Engineering Entrance Examinations / SAT / Olympiads / NTSE & KVPY. FIITJEE’s emphasis on making the students imbibe the fundamental concepts of Science & Maths and on sharpening their analytical skills and parallel thinking processes has ensured that the students have also performed excellently in their school studies & Board Exams. The prime objective of FIITJEE has been to provide students with a platform where they are able to access the collective knowledge of experts that can help them in achieving their goal. It has been our endeavour at FIITJEE to make this pool of knowledge accessible to as many students as possible, purely based on their capabilities & potential and not on their financial ability. In consonance with this belief FIITJEE has supported financially weak students with scholarships & grants. Though the number of seats in IITs are limited but any student preparing for IIT-JEE at FIITJEE reaps benefits beyond IIT-JEE. FIITJEE takes pride in improving attitude, creativity, analytical skills & IQ of all its students. This change helps each of our students in giving his/her best performance in all vistas of academic pursuits and career thereafter. Taking the initiative of helping the economically underprivileged to a larger level, in the year 2008, FIITJEE constituted FORTUNATE 40 – A program to provide world-class training to serious students from financially weaker backgrounds to achieve their goal of success & Top Ranks in IIT-JEE and Other Competitive Exams. The program will financially support capable students soon going to class IX & class XI and whose total parental income is less than Rs. 10,000/- per month. FIITJEE will support these meritorious students in their preparation for achieving their dream goal, by awarding 100% scholarships for FIITJEE program & 100% waivers on hostel charges. For Integrated School Program, the school fee will be charged from the student (at some locations scholarship on school fee may also be awarded). The FORTUNATE 40 batch for each program, at each location, will have a maximum of 40 students only. Students will have to appear for a selection test on Sunday 9th February, 2014. There is no registration fee for the selection test. Selected students will be notified and admitted to the program with 100% scholarships. The final discretion of award of scholarship in each case will remain with FIITJEE and this decision will be final and binding on the candidate.

Solution for QoTD on 02/06/2013
Equal volumes of two solutions of HCl are mixed. One solution has pH = 1 while the other has pH = 5. What will the pH of the solution obtained be?
Solution:
Let the volume of the solutions mixed = “V” mL
So, the volume of the final solution obtained after mixing = “2V” mL
For solution with pH = 1,
Concentration of H+ = 10-1 M
Moles of H+ = 10-1 V
For solution with pH = 5,
Concentration of H+ = 10-5M
Moles of H+ = 10-5 V
For the Final Solution,
Total moles of H+ in the final solution = (10-1 V) + (10-5 V) ≈ 10-1 V
Concentration of H+ in the final solution = (10-1 V) / 2V = 0.05 M
pH of the final solution = -log 0.05 = 1.3
