Claire Danes on Temple Grandin

"I went through a period in my mid- to late-20s when I was transitioning out of that ingenue period, which I was very grateful to be doing. But I was playing a lot of roles where I was defined by my love for some guy, and that got really tedious. I mean, I love love and falling in love, but it can get pretty flat real fast. Then I did Temple Grandin, which was such a blessing because it was so antithetical to any ingenue role. I felt stretched, inspired and robust. Then there was just nothing again, and that was almost harder. I really didn't have any tolerance for a limited kind of secondary role. I had to wait for Carrie onHomeland. She was the first character who could match Temple's dynamism. It was the first time I was scared into action, and that felt great."

Smitten by Youth

Earlier this year, I was introduced to Youth Lagoon by my friend Daniel. I have since been smitten by their ability to produce dreamy yet uplifting music. This song, 17, is one of my favorites off their first album. Have a listen and see what you think.

P.S. The song really kicks off at 2:20, does it give you chills too? This is why I love music.

A while ago I discovered ROMA, a short film by David Altobelli, and it's safe to say that I've been smitten by it for months. It's time I share this gem on my blog. 

My favorite things about this film:

1) The music and images tell the story so well that I forget that there is an absence of words. Body language > spoken word

2) It illustrates the difficulty of being young and in love, something I think a lot of people can relate to; heartache is a pretty widespread issue.

3) It's set in Rome, only one of the most romantic cities in the world, no big deal.

4) It makes me want to be in love as much as it makes me not want to be in love.

6) I can't stop replaying it.

I have a lot of talented and creative friends (yes, I'm bragging) and recently my friend, Riun Garner, released an EP with his new band Snowbeast! I was stoked about the album so much that I was itching to write a review. I hope this post has lead at least one more person into discovering this awesome new Vancouver band.

A Race of Taboo Topics

A couple weeks ago I checked out a staging of David Mamet's play Race. It was interesting/slightly uncomfortable to see taboo topics such as: sexuality, race and gender tackled in such a direct manner.

I got the chance to see Dan Mangan play at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Friday. Lets just say this review is a happy one. I came into the concert knowing only a couple songs and left knowing and loving many more.

Dan came across as both a talented artist and a genuine person.

Richard Linklater Answers All of Your "Before Midnight" Questions

Vulture: Do you think we have trouble staying with the person we're supposed to be with?

Richard Linklater: In real life? No, I don’t think so.

Vulture: But isn’t that part of the theme at hand in these films?

Richard Linklater: It certainly was in the first two. But we end up tying that up, in a way. Certainly, whatever loose ends exist in the second film will fully be answered in the third.
