Our latest Great Directors series will celebrate the work of Belgian auteur Chantal Akerman. A boundary-pushing innovator who often blended narrative, documentary, and experimental forms, Akerman emerged in the generation that followed the French New Wave with her epic portrait of everyday womanhood, JEAN DIELMAN, 23, QUAI DU COMMERCE, 1080 BRUXELLES (pictured). Over the next 40 years, Akerman made dozens of pieces, many of which explored the relationship of women to the institutions of society by diving into the mundane and relishing in subtleties.
