I think one of the reasons the Rosa Diaz news is, for me, so exciting is because we now have a “safe” bisexual character on mainstream television.
Brooklyn Nine Nine is a half hour sitcom. That’s not to say that bad things don’t happen to the characters, because they do, and it’s not to say there isn’t a certain amount of dangerous elements, I mean, it’s about cops, for Christ’s sake. But major characters don’t die. And death is a standard trap for LGBT characters. There is a reason we all know what someone means when they say kill your gays.
Rosa’s not going to fall victim to that. Unless the show is taken in a vastly different direction from where it is right now, Rosa is not going to be killed senselessly.
Whenever I tune into Brooklyn Nine Nine, I’m not going to have to worry that she’s about to bite it for no good reason. I don’t have to keep it in the back of my mind that she might not make it through this episode by virtue of her sexuality.
tl;dr, Rosa Diaz is an honest to god safe bisexual character in a form of media, I’ve been crying a little since I found out, and that’s one of the reasons.
steph actually adressed this in an interview!
“I was really excited about it. I hadn’t really seen much of that representation in television that I personally watch. I know it’s out there, but often times it’s written in a specific way. “Let’s introduce a gay character and quickly kill them off,” so you have the ride of the complexity of this amazing character, but also [you do] not necessarily deal with them over the course of our entire show. Obviously, that’s probably not going to happen in this case [laughs], because Rosa is a core member of this ensemble. It’s not like she’s going to come out and then get hit by a car and get killed off. It’s really cool to me that our show is exploring something with almost the safety net underneath it, telling the audience, “Look, we’re not doing this so that we can explore a story and simply throw it away when it’s convenient for us. We are going to keep this person around because we love this person already.” It’s part of the family.”
Gentrification creates a stifling homogeneity in urban areas that makes it less suited for the everyday lives of the lower class and more suited towards the leisure and tourism of those with expendable income.
An old, decrepit laundromat gets replaced by an upscale bakery? And people are mad? It’s not that the poor hate organic vegan cupcakes, it’s that most of us don’t have a way to do laundry in our own home.
Run-down corner stores replaced by hand-made designer clothing boutiques? We don’t hate your eco-fabric shawl, but I can’t eat that for dinner after work like I could have a can of beans I grabbed from that corner store when I don’t have time to take the bus to the real grocery store after work.
What gentrification brings in and of itself is not typically bad, it’s that gentrification brings institutions of leisure and pleasure and makes it so that the poor have to go farther out of their way for basic necessities. It turns low-income living spaces into local tourist attractions. It can even create food deserts by putting restaurants, grocery stores, etc. in that the majority of the lower class cannot afford.
Imagine if someone totally renovated your house and turned it into a mini theme park - they took away your sleeping space, where you prepare food, where you clean yourself and get ready for your day, and replaced it with things that will please people who are visiting, who have their own homes they can go back to, who are here not for their entire life but just as a distraction from their otherwise mundane existence. It’s not that you hate theme parks, it’s not like you’ve never been to a theme park and vow to never visit one again. It’s just that you need to live! To survive! And the leisure of those who have more than you should not invalidate your existence.
The mashup you never thought would work

Do You Like Punching Nazis?
If so, you should be aware of some great Nazi-punching opportunities coming to communities near you. The Trump administration has announced plans to publish weekly lists of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants in sanctuary cities. This policy amounts to government weaponization of alt-right harassment techniques - a weekly list whose sole function is to give white supremacist mobs targets.
What this is going to mean, in practice, is that there are going to be families in your community who are going to become the targets of mob violence. They are literally going to need people to set up lawn chairs on their sidewalks at 3am and scare off Nazi lynch mobs.
So if you’re really into punching Nazis, figure out what local groups are organizing to protect people on these lists and get involved. Because there are an awful lot of Nazis to punch beyond Richard Spencer.
Signal boost for my American followers.
chris meloni out here about to kill every neo nazi with his bare hands
hey people #undocumentedunafraid (a hashtag being used on twitter) is obviously a honeypot by the feds/being used to build a database by ppl on /pol/ of undocumented aliens. stop posting in it. or everyone post in it and make the tag useless. just dont post in it if youre undocumented, obviously.
“White supremacist and human punching bag” I DIE
this years holocaust remembrance day is very important, given the current political climate. take today to remember the horrifying acts committed against jewish and romani people. take today to recognize the beginning of those same acts forming against PoC in america today. take today to resist those in power however you see fit, and after today, dont stop resisting. i am a jew still personally affected by the holocaust even 2 generations later. every jew is affected by the shoah, but there is a special pain to know what happened to your own family. or worse, not knowing what happened to the unknown people you see in old family photographs. we as a people will never be the same. remember the holocaust today. dont let this happen again.
non-jews are absolutely allowed/encouraged to reblog this
i also want to remind all the nonjews that holocaust rembrance day (today, jan 27) is NOT the same as yom hashoah (april 23), and that yom hashoah is a day SPECIFICALLY to remember the jewish dead, so when we’re grieving in april don’t try to tell us about the roma who died. we know. We remember them today. They have their own day, though i’m not sure when it is, and we have a right to mourn our dead, just as they have a right to mourn theirs.
WE NEED 3 SENATORS TO CHANGE THEIR VOTES TO PREVENT DeVos FROM BEING CONFIRMED!!!
The vote to confirm Betsy DeVos as Sec of Education was delayed. The hearing of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions will now be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 31, according to an advisory from the committee. And now to act (esp my ME, GA, NC and SC friends)! Betsy DeVos is up for confirmation as U.S. Education Secretary, and many, many educators have expressed strongly that she is not qualified to ensure quality education in this country.
Please consider calling one of the following Republican Senators (key in the confirmation vote) to express your opinion on the appointment. At least 3 of these need to be convinced in order to block DeVos’ nomination. Don’t email. Don’t tweet. Don’t complain on Facebook. Call them!
Then, PLEASE SHARE WIDELY:
If you live in one of the states represented below, PLEASE call YOUR Senator, If you don’t, pick one and call him/her:

Some artists and fans had expressed concern on social media about how the musical was being cast, although no long-term casting commitments were made.
THEY CANCELED THE WHOLE MUSICAL INSTEAD OF JUST HIRING ACTORS WHO WEREN’T WHITE
As much as racial diversity is a good thing, you’re not gonna find an entire cast of acting Egyptians in New York…
do you, um… do you understand how large and diverse new york is? between 2008-2012, there were 39,000+ egyptians living in new york, new jersey, and long island. that number has probably only increased. it’s not difficult for me to imagine that many of them are either working actors or aspiring actors. and that’s just egyptian immigrants. these roles could be played by people of egyptian descent. i don’t have a statistic for you on that one, but again, new york is densely populated and very diverse. i can’t imagine it would be that difficult to find egyptian actors, especially if you put out a casting call specifically for egyptians
Also there are tons of North African Jews for the Israelites lmao
I personally know off the top of my head enough multi-talented MENA Jews to fully cast a historically accurate Broadway show and you’re telling me that a massive theater company with a large budget and financial backing couldn’t pull something together with an open casting call in New York City?
Bullshit.
imagine being this isolated from the world.
This is one of many consequences of the whitewashing of cities like New York and LA in media, too. When shows and movies consistently portray these cities as containing 95-100% white people even in background shots (hey Fantastic Beasts, how’re you doing!), folks like @minus-three wind up genuinely convinced that that is what those cities look like.
And people don’t look things up before speaking so they end up looking dumb as hell. The demographics of major cities are easy to find.
