My very late take on the good omens finale:
I watched it and kind of forgot about it because it was underwhelming and frankly disappointing. I know the there has been a lot of discourse and in all honesty I have't been reading or interacting with it at all so my points have probably already been made. I also am not in the fandom of Good Omens, but I really enjoyed the first two seasons, so I'm sure other people know the content of the show in a lot more detail than I do.
My problem with the finale is mainly the pacing, it's hard to wrap up a show that usually has an entire season to build on a plot and expand on the characters in only 90 minutes. It was also doing a lot more telling then showing when it came to character's motivations.
Crowley's care for humanity and free will was shown in earlier seasons, but only mentioned a lot in the finale without actually seeing it in practice. The only human characters being Jesus and the other guy (whose name I don't remember) and their interactions were isolated. If we got to see Crowley and Aziraphale's interactions with the human characters it would justify their motivations and make the plot more interesting, but with the shortened format, we had to rely on knowledge of previous seasons making the ending feel less earned.
Jesus should not have been a character, he mainly existed as comedic relief and died so his character arc felt kind of pointless. He acted as a plot device to move the plot forward while simultaneously taking the already limited time away from the characters we actually cared about. I do think having a human character would be nice, so again we can see Crowley and Aziraphale's motivations reflected in said character, but the execution was lackluster.
I personally really hated the way that Aziraphale and Crowley's relationship ended. What was interesting about their characters was their long and complex relationship over thousands of years. And while I enjoy the "they are in love in every universe" concept, I think that it doesn't work in this practice. Why can't they be happy in this universe?
Fan fiction often is created when fans are dissatisfied with the canon, and a lot of times is due to a lack of representation of queer identities. This way the characters we want to see together in the original media, at least get to be happy in fanon.
Seeing these two characters with a deep love for each other still only getting to be happy together in an alternate universe, was obviously disappointing. We don't know these versions of the characters at all and have no emotional connection to them.
Even in this alternate version, where all of what makes their relationship interesting is erased, we still never see the characters kiss. Meaning that the only time that these queer or at least queer presenting characters share a kiss on screen is when it isn't being reciprocated.
I had a lot of hope going into this finale so I was really upset with how it turned out. Good Omens was a show I felt that I didn't have to worry about their handling of its main ship. Which is why it hurt more than the other media I interact with, where I have grown to expect less.
So yeah, that was a let down.
