Out to Sea || Delphi & Carli
Carli maneuvered her cart away from the beach and tucked it near a few large boulders, quickly covering it with some wood debris to disguise it as best she could. If anyone were to actively search, they’d probably see it, but Carli figured that would be the least of her problems if people were actually scouting from the boat. She lifted her head briefly over the rocks, scanning to assess the situation; people were climbing out of a small boat, walking inland… they didn’t seem to have any war paint on, but they were obviously Floukru. Kneeling back down, Carli ran a hand down to her leg, were she kept her fishing knife strapped. It was large and sharp, but she’d have to get way too close to inflict any damage with it. Damn it, moments like this Carli wished she’d taken after her brother and taken up archery. Still, better to be armed than to just wait and hide like a sitting duck.
Something stirred in Carli’s stomach at the sight of the larger boat, waiting just off the coast. Floukru. She hadn’t seen a boat like that in over a decade, and it stirred up so many memories that had long stayed dormant. The warm sea air, the tropical humidity… the colorful trees and flora. Like a dream just on the edge of her thoughts, Carli could almost feel it for a moment as she watched the ship rise and fall over the tides.
Staring at the sea, Carli noticed no more boats were coming towards the beach. She couldn’t see the crewmen anywhere nearby, meaning they were likely scouting the area. Carli had to make a decision. If she ran now, she might run into one of the men, at which point, there would be no leaving quietly. She could conceal herself better and hide, but Carli didn’t fancy sleeping on a beach all night. So, it seemed she had one alternative. Engage. These sailors didn’t know that she was alone. In fact, for all they knew she could be a scout sent before a huge army. Maybe she’d have that kind of intimidation on her side.
After taking a deep breath, Carli stood and hopped over the rock, walking towards the lone figure on the beach. She’d rather engage with someone who was also (currently) alone than risk running into one of the guys on shore. The wind was picking up, whipping Carli’s hair about and she patted it down, walking slowly and quietly down the beach to the woman. Her knife waited in her ready hand, though she kept it low.
“You can’t be here!” Carli shouted once she was close enough. She couldn’t risk losing too much ground between them, or she’d be at more of a disadvantage- she wouldn’t be able to run, like she fully intended to do. “You have to leave! Now!”
The moment Delphi set eyes upon a figure in the distant, her heart froze in her chest. Like the frigid lands she was currently visiting, ice began to spread through her body, casing her organs in ice. She had detached completely. Her mind refused to flash back to memories of the last time she had been caught on a beach like this. Her mind didn’t travel to days of being chained up and feeling the bite of a knife as patterns were carved into her back. Her mind blocked out all memories of ripped off fingernails, sewn lips, broken bones, anything that had to do with the memory at all. If anything, her mind shut down completely. The only thing left in Delphi was pure instinct. And instinct had her starting to stride toward the figure, drawing her swords in preparation. She wasn’t going back. As she neared the figure, she noted the age of the woman, and the expression on her face. Her words gave her room to pause.
Leave now? Where were the threats? The yells of hatred?
In all honesty, if the woman in front of her turned out to not be a warrior, she could just kill her now and be done with it. If she was a warrior, she knew she could hold her own against them due to her own warrior training. If she was a scout, kill her and then get the fuck back to Flougeda and deal with the fallout there. Her gaze flickered around the rocks and the distant trees searching for more figures but she couldn’t see any. But if she did kill her, then would come the task of finding her sailors and Delphi refused to leave them behind. What could she do? Play diplomacy?
Brow furrowing, she tensed but ended up sheathing one of her swords. Using her free hand, she lifted it in the air in a peaceful gesture. “Relax, Relax.” She soothed, voice calm and even. Keeping her expression open and honest, she fought the urge to do the exact opposite. Every nerve in her body was telling her just to kill the girl but she couldn’t risk the loss of her crew or even worse - the start of another war.
She sheathed her other sword, leaving her hands empty. It was a detestable feeling to be so exposed but the situation called for it. Depending on the goodwill of another person could go either way.
“I am not here for trouble, I promise you.” She jerked a thumb over her shoulder in the direction of her ship in the distance. “We are just trying to make it home and wait out the storm. We only came to shore for water.”
