Amputation - a vision that keeps looming large in my head... Flo was born with a hypoplastic right leg. She is now 4, and the fact that she is different from other children, that she cannot run and play like them is becoming harder and harder for her to bear each day. The leg is half the length of
Siepomaga donations are possible from yesterday. Rotationplasty treatment at Paley Institute is our only hope. Please help!
Good luck to Flo!
Many thanks <3 :)
Iban update
Updating the Donations page with a new iban number for PLN donations.
Last Friday Flo made her first steps. And not so few. She seems to be encouraged by other kids' presence in the kindergarten. She's afraid of them, but keeps copying them. She was not so interested in walking at home last weekend, but hey, it's weekend. ;) Yesterday she walked half an hour in the kindergarten and even more later at home. There's no movie, because one cannot catch up with her. ;)
Prosthesis
As for a little update, Flower got her first prosthesis and keeps exercising day by day. For now, mostly by trying to stand by the table, playing and listening to music. There are rare and mostly short moments when she does not put her elbows on the table and stands on her own. Last time she even pointed at the prosthesis to get it and looking quite happy, she swinged a little on her hips (I showed her how she can try to balance on both legs and she tried this without my help! :) ). The prosthesis is too heavy for her short, weak leg. For now.
She needs time. She will do it someday. ;)
Flo’s first birthday. Well, it was a month ago, but I forgot to post it in English. Shame on me! Flo traveling on her little planet has gone a first full circle around the Sun. You already know that way, but for her, every step was something new. Something to envy a little, in a way you can feel envious of someone’s discovering your favourite book, reading it for the first time. With all its surprises and wonders. First autumn. First snowflakes on her little nose. First flowers (also the eaten ones). First sight of the beach, collecting first seashells. Playgrounds and museums. First words and songs. Dance. Even parties at her little friends. ;) First fighting over the toys. Little bruises. Sent messages... :/ and emptied cat feeding bowls. Flo. A little star from the Perseid meteor shower, that made my dream come true.
Moving on...
As for a little update. Flo keeps crawling close to the speed of light (and yeah, her mass grows), she can also stand on her left leg or left knee + right leg.
We are still looking for a doctor who could make proper document for the national fund to return the cost of prosthesis. They just keep refusing.
Today the Vigo company took the form of Flo’s leg to prepare the prosthesis. We are about to receive it in September. And we have a new x-ray scan from the Dega Hospital in Poznan. Not much news, isn’t it? ;) And that’s good. :P We will know more only with the MRI when Flo turns 2.
Meanwhile, I had to buy her some first shoes. <3 :) And it’s her birthday in 5 days. :D
Still waiting for the first step
Well, our last visit at the clinic was a bit disappointing. The doctor said it is too early and he did not advice giving Flo an ortho-prosthesis without her undergoing a foot surgery. There are many people who have such prosthesis, but in his opinion the prosthesis is too heavy for the child to walk.
When asked, he also said he would not straighten the stiff knee, leaving her walking on the bended one. We signed for an USG he needs in September. It seems more and more odd, and the conflict of interests of different doctors shows even more with every visit now. To one of them the most important thing is an usg, to the second one - mri, and to the third it is the x-ray scan.
We won’t have the foot surgery done this year. First: we were warned not to interfere in this way if we choose dr Paley’s treatment. Moreover, our local doctor did not follow his idea (of surgery) with any further plan, as to what to do with the leg after putting it in the prosthesis. I asked if he plans doing something later on, like straightening the knee, or bone lengthening, or maybe amputating (which we would not accept, but we want to know his opinion). Or what impact can the foot surgery have on the leg’s functionality later, in case the rotationplasty would be necessary (with the rotated foot making for a knee). He have not answered any of this.
Both doctors from Poznan and Florida, Shadi and Paley, say that she can use prosthesis without foot surgery for now. We signed for a consultation in Vigo Gdynia, but now we are looking for someone who would prepare documents for the national fund. Surprisingly, not as easy as we thought it is. :(
“I can stand! But I can’t stand waiting for my leg. Seeing a doctor in 4 days, he may have some news on the orthosis. I need one, now, I have so many places to go! :) Thumbs up! Love. Flo”
Hardly a 9-month young, and the right leg takes its first full steps. Only the left one still crawls on its knee. Hah. You thought it would be the other way around, didn’t you? ;) Got ya!
Racing 4 Flo
Drivers of DTM 2015 league from simracing.pl voluntairly race under Flo’s motto.
Simracing.pl is a Polish group of people sharing a hobby of racing simulations in a number of leagues. This season Thomas Mikolcz proposed everyone can sign his car for Flo’s cause, “go 4 Flo" or "racing for Flo".
Go, Gentlemen!
Flo’s thanks to the knights and pirates!
Last Saturday we invited you to the Oliwa Park to see the kinghts and pirate companies fighting for Flo’s cause.
There were shining armors, and there were also uncanny pirate tricks, but everybody acted in a good and noble deed, having our graditude. :)
Thanks to Mrs Stanislawa Cempa and Mr Daniel Saulski, you can see a photo album here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.745771938873492.1073741832.699856340131719&type=3
We managed to collect over 500zł there for Flo’s treatment, thanks to the charitable Fundacja Dzieciom “Zdążyć z Pomocą” and many donators. Thanks againt to the Odn Inogici, Kompania Kaperska, Pirate Daniel from Motlawa, nice ladies from Warzywniak Art Gallery who also made it possible, Mrs Stanislawa Cempa and all the donators. You inspire. You rule. Arrr!
Three ways of treatment
Well, here we are. Having our first meeting with dr Paley behind us. The news are worse than we expected though.
The doctor said Flo’s knee is stiff, meaning he did not detect any movement ability. It is bent, but even if he surgically straightens it, it remains stiff, causing many difficulities with her mobility.
He mentioned three ways of treatment.
1. Reconstruction and lenghtening, which in his opinion is of little sense, because of little function of such leg. The leg will be weak and stiff. It will be difficult for Flo to walk (stairs), sit, fit in small places (cars, cinema seats etc). The point of having her own, but disfunctional leg, at the cost of years of pain, family separation, lots of money, wearing fixators, and financial dependency on the treatment for whole life, is to be discussed. There is an option of replacing the knee when she’s grown up. But she would have to replace such knee repeatedly (up to 20 years depending on her mobility and activity).
2. Prosthesis with foot amputation, without limb lenghtening. The prosthesis starts on the knee level, replacing her foot. Scary. Yes. But after one surgery she would lead a normal life, more or less, being able to play, run, go to school trips, buy herself cool things when growing up.
3. Prosthesis with rotationplasty. Meaning, she would use a 180 degree rotated foot as a knee joint. Prosthesis goes on the knee level, but the ankle is bending the “knee”. Weird? But in some cases, it’s the best choice. You do not remove anything after all. It is also done by a single surgery, getting back to life as soon as the rehabilitation is done.
What now? Well, nothing. We are waiting till she’s two, then we do the MRI and see more of what happens meanwhile. And only after we know it, do we see the doctor and make decisions. We are collecting money for the treatment, because no matter what the choice will be, the hip, knee and foot have to be treated. There is also an insignificant chance, that untill then, some changes in the knee occur, allowing it to move and bent. Dr Paley does not believe it, but he can not tell for extra sure that it won’t happen. It’s like a lottery: you can feel like a winner until you check the results. ;) So we must keep living on the victory, no matter how impossible it seems. And our victory is Flo herself.
Good thing is, that she can try to walk on an orthotics.
Well, we’re going out, to say goodbye to the Marseille. Its sun is fading.
Going to see dr Paley
With echoes of the swords and shooting hardly fading, Flo’s little ears filled with a hum of plane’s engines. On 12th of April we arrived safely at the Marseille airport, Provence, to see dr Dror Paley and talk about Flo’s treatment. Keep your fingers crossed so we can hear some good news. ;)
Knights fighting for Flo
Knights are not extinct species! :) They are just working and training in Odn Inogici ^^
If you’d like to see real knights, feel invited to Warzywniak Art Gallery in Gdansk Oliwa this Saturday. They are making a battle show for Flo M. (and there is much to see, since they are winners of many European tournaments). Visiting Warzywniak this Saturday you can also see some crafts, armory, plays for kids, hear a word on historical clothing and listen to stories of Oliwa’s history.
They say there is also a pirate invasion planned. Well, there’ll be only one pirate, but hey, everybody knows single pirates are the most trouble. <3
Event hours 2pm-6pm.
See you there. Arrr!
