Chest Waves

Some breaths we take, are minute swishes, rising and falling like ocean swells on a calm day until they become gasping crackles whistling from your chest shaking snow from the paned glass. You flip to breathe, then flip again thumping your chest to fluff like a pillow. You straighten your back wait for the silence to break pulling in a breath of air hoping the clanking sound is just your teeth chattering.

more shadow than self

losing my place to exhaustion,

this year

november owns the woods

somnolence flirts

with every piquant tree,

the morning knoll enchants

and sure

it is of no consequence

that i linger

i miss reading your words,

from the ether of gentle pause

i sense your absence

your movement

my energy detects an empty ache

a vacant sigh,

i miss knowing

your delphic little life

was consumed with passions,

that your struggles

organic like mine

swayed pendulous,

you were vulnerable

you were lucid

you endured

Your perseverance – when every ounce of you wants to give up, somehow you keep moving forward. Your feet forgot how to take a step, your body how to sit upright, and yet you walk – you walk when there is no earth beneath your feet, no tendons, no sinew in your legs, when your bones go hollow and brittle, you walk, you walk, you walk. It rains on the parades, on the celebration days; it rains when there is so much to do in the sun, but as the water dams up in this hollow land, you place your feet upon the water and somehow, you walk.
