SACRIFICE / I WANT THINGS TO BE BEAUTIFUL
I think Erid did send more ships actually.
The problem is, Rocky only made it to Tau Ceti for 2 reasons.
1 - his workshop is surrounded by enough astrophage to block most radiation
2 - (in the book) Rocky had to trial and error the ship’s deceleration because the eridians had no idea about relativity
So yes. I do think the eridians sent other ships. But when the first ship failed, those new ones were likely redesigned. Meaning there was no astrophage protected area. And even if by some miracle they survived longer than the Blip-A’s crew, they probably overshot Tau Ceti by several light years bc they had no idea that time was moving differently for them.
The real question is how many ships they sent. How many times did they try? How many times after realizing none were coming back?
Who had to face that question? Was there an Eridian Eva Stratt, forced to face the trolley problem alone because it needed to be faced? When did the scales tip, when did feeding people to the stars become worse than waiting for the inevitable end? Did it ever? Did they send ships right up until Rocky and Grace arrived?
How many eridians made the choice Yao and Ilyukhina and Dubois did, knowing they were going to die, not ever going to come home, leaving on a mission that was almost certainly pointless - but they went anyways. Had to. Had to try.
nikki begging bear to kill her and all he does is ask whats so bad about being with him. one of the most nauseating scenes ive ever witnessed
if i think too hard about nikki’s experience in Obsession i feel physically ill. imagine one second you’re just walking up to your house after a night out, and then the next, you’re looking out of your own body, but you’re not longer in control. you’re a prisoner to a terrible, unnatural version of yourself that only exists because of a choice someone else made. when you scream, nobody listens. when you claw your way out for long enough to explain that this isn’t you, nobody listens. when you beg the man who trapped you in this situation to put and end to it, to set your free, he just. doesn’t. listen. and then when you do finally regain control, all your friends are dead, and you are covered in their blood. because of a choice someone else made
human sickness very leaky very disgust
first run of the xenonite suit (grace naively thought he was going to be able to play it cool)
when I say "you should kill him" and people look at me weird
i just know this two were the biggest menaces above the stratt vat
two days of stratt sketches
EVA STRATT & HER TEAM 💫 PROJECT HAIL MARY (2026)
You know, Martin and Annie can go on and on about how Totally Not Effected they are by their doomed situationship.
They can act like it's just sex.
But, I mean, they both found a Freak to match theirs, they found their person. That whole scene in Grace's class, they are so in scync with each other about priorities (their sex lives) and goals (the mission) and vibes (unfliter rays of social unbothered sunshine). They're both ao perfectly blaze, they're both smarty pants scientists willing to offer up their lives for humanity, no hesistation (well we'll never really know if they hesitated, but they never backed down once they were aboard)
Like that's some soulmate shit as much as Eva and Ryland and Grace and Rocky.
But my point is, they're only human and they can go on and on about being okay with it, but I think its more that they just really talk to eachother (I mean they're so blunt with Grace, I can only assume they're blunt with eachother) when they need to, and that they've talked about how tragic everything is and how sad they are sometimes, and how it doesn't change anything, and they're probably so happy to have some one who agrees, yes its tragic and we're not going to stop it, bur we can admit that be h9nest and be ourselves. Martin will still go, or maybe her. They aren't going to stop it, their love or the launch, but there's no way it doesnt bother them.
Annie says it herself "we know this only ends in death."
It was almost kind of the universe to take them togther. To spare them seperation.
can't believe that there's barley any fics about Grace and his muscles that man is toned to the bone and he works as a MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER he should not being having allat but he does
DuBois and Shapiro wanted that cookie so bad, to bad they're dead and that he's dense as a brick.
Because I’m actually so torn on this, should I make my Project Hail Mary everybody lives/nobody dies fic (Stratt POV, you get no other context)…
Ilyukhina/Stratt
Ilyukhina/Stratt, Dubois/Shapiro
Ilyukhina/Stratt/Shapiro (prev. Dubois/Shapiro)
Stratt/Ilyukhina, Ilyukhina/Shapiro, Shapiro/Dubois
Stratt/Ilyukhina/Shapiro and Shapiro/Dubois
Any of the above but Dubois/Shapiro get Grace as a little treat
Any of the above, plus Grace/Carl
Any of the above, plus Grace/Dimitri
Fuck it, they all dissolve into a codependent polycule of secret third thing
Other (at risk of my sanity, specify in replies)
(Bonus: cutiepies watching their wife sing)
friendships and different kind of relationships in the vat that i would have loved to see (and how i would perceive some of them):
ilyukhina and yao (i just know they had some of the best friendships going on)
carl and stratt (a lot is talked about carl and grace, but what about them?? i think they would be pretty good friends)
shapiro and ilyukhina (ilyukhina is a menace, just add annie no-filter shapiro to olesya innuendos ilyukhina and they would be so chaotic above the vat, i know they would bully grace when stratt is busy)
yao and stratt (i'm pretty sure they could also develop a really good friendship)
ilyukhina and grace (sorry but i'm a sucker for them being little sister-older brother coded)
dimitri and grace (this friendship is kind of canon in the book so, to see more of them, maybe even seeing dimitri and ilyukhina racing grace to drink, of course grace is out really quickly at ilyukhina's and dimitri's comparition)
lokken and stratt (lokken actually being everyone's mother figure on the vat sorry, i'm a sucker for parent figures, i have issues okay. i know my perception of lokken may have changed a little with the movie, but i really think that lokken and stratt would get along just fine, they both seem rough at first but after spending a while with them you get to the conclution they are both really nice people)
yao and grace (yao is a person i think grace would reach out looking for some guidance, in the movie yao is the only one grace approaches to say "thank you for what you are doing" and i think yao's words really stayed with him, so yeah i think their relationship, friendship, or however you want to call it or see it, would be really nice to see)
Finished this mini comic following the event of Knitted Comforts by @sandrahuuler in their Pressure Point Series + Plus some bonus doodles based on other works in the series
Extra doodles (Content Warning: Implied Sexual Content)
Hey so whatever you don't think about how Dubois and Sharpio probably knew (/thought because Rocky still probably would have shown up and offered fuel to get back to earth) they were never going to see each other again, whether through Dubois getting on the Hail Mary as planned or something happening to Dubois meaning Annie had to go instead. And then they ended up dying together when that facility exploded.
end of the world

It was the end of the world and they were going to die.
Well, it was only guaranteed one of them would- the other was left to fate, or the universe, or whatever you believed in.
Dubois and Shapiro believed in neither. They believed in science. And really, what else could they put their faith in? Science is what got them here, together.
They had met before, sure. Same fields of study, after all. They had just never been shoved on a boat together and given the same schedule.
Which is where they were now, by the way. A boat. Not sailing to their deaths, exactly, but something like it.
