Martín Berrote often even doesn’t change his clothes before the bedtime, because there’s a frequent necessity of leaving the monastery in the night. Because he already knows what happens after a late dinner with Andrés and his wife: the all have a good conversation, Andrés looks like the happiest man in the world - of course he does, the love of his life and his best friend are living by his side; when they finishe the bottle of fine vine, Andrés grabs the woman by her hand and with an fallible adorable smirk says “Well, we’re probably going to bed” and they both stand up and the last words Martín hears are “Have a lovely night” from the woman; Andrés doesn’t say anything else, just winks to him and Martín returns a fake smile with understanding; Martín uncorks another bottle, finishing a horrible end of the evening and having the darkest thoughts; he slowly walks to his room, trying not to hear the noise from Andrés’ room; but anyway four out of five times he hears the woman’s satisfactory moans, fragments of her loud phrases; three out of five times he hears the most painful sounds in the whole world - Andrés’ low groans; even if Martín tries to sleep in his bed, it’s impossible not to hear the process which the love of his life and his wife are busy with; even if he cuts his ears, the sounds imprinted in his cold heart forever; so there’s only one opportunity to Martín - always be prepared to leave the monastery soaked in sighs and moans he can’t stand and handle.
