The Fuller Anglo-Saxon Brooch, late 9th Century CE, The British Museum, London

This large Anglo-Saxon silver brooch is of extraordinary craftsmanship and perhaps belonged to a high-ranking churchman, or even a nobleman from the court of King Alfred the Great (871-899 CE). The central part is decorated with five figures representing each of the human senses. Sight is in the centre with large bulging eyes, and he is surrounded by Touch, Taste, Smell and Hearing, who can all be identified by their actions.

Yes, tumblr ads are weird and unsettling but I don’t think they’ll ever top this one.

“Disappear for 3 month” is insane. Like? Stay in the house! Let people wonder if you’re dead!!! Has there been a murder or an accident? Did she get plastic surgery that didn’t settle right? Is there a weird secret pregnancy going on? No one will know!

“Keep it private until it’s [sic] done” kinda sounds… not threatening, but just strange. Is there a dirty secret here??? What needs to be hidden so badly?

Weight loss ads on the internet are garbage, of course, but this one is just extra odd. It looks like a poster you’d see in a church with a Bible verse on it. Or the cover of a romance thriller knocking off Colleen Hoover. Visually, this is aimed at the kind of people who are into Colleen Hoover and/or vaguely uplifting motivational posters. IDK about the berries though. Is that what we are eating? Just some berries on a stick??

Disappear for three months. Don’t tell anyone you’re doing a weird and probably dangerous scam diet. Re-appear smaller and more frail. People will compliment you on weight loss but also maybe wonder if you’re seriously ill. Or maybe you *did* have a baby but you gave it away.

Diet culture is such bullshit. The marketing tactics don’t even make sense anymore (not that they ever did.) There’s an implication that if you’re 180 lbs you aren’t even fit to be out in society. Hide your hideous body until you’ve lost weight.

Came across this art installation, Liza Lou's Kitchen, at the Whitney Museum of American Art, NYC. It's a kitchen made of tiny glass beads, that artist Liza Lou did, taking 5 yrs. to complete, from 1991 - 1996.
