> I went too late at the market and am trying to get home. I'm innocent!
You really never intended to be out this late. You had gotten caught up gossiping with the nice old ladies at the market, and now you were not only out after dark, but you had to acknowledge a truth you'd been desperately avoiding- your sense of direction was absolute rubbish.
You'd lost the path almost immediately - though in your defense, it was rather poorly marked and hard to follow when well lit, so in the dark, it may as well not exist at all. Still, having made this trek so many times during the day should have given you some kind of muscle memory, at least, right? You certainly hoped so, as the scenery looked almost identical in every direction.
Your steps slowed as you wracked your brain for anything useful. A few anecdotes about the woods came to mind, but before you could decipher whether they were useful or would lead you into even more danger, a desperate howl rent the air and sent you running -
But running where?
Towards the nearby mountain - I can hide in the cave system until daybreak!
Into a dense grove of trees - they'd have a hard time maneuvering here, right?
Forward, in a blind panic! Who has time to think now?!
