One thing I love about all for the game is that a lot of the characters are not described in depth. We get a small detail like renee's hair color, matt's liberty spikes, etc., but everything else is pretty vague

except for andrew, jean and jeremy

For those three we get constant details--how andrew's eyes look gold in the sun, jean's hair growing out and looking windswept, how jeremy's face lights up with every genuine smile. But we only get these because we are seeing them through the eyes of someone who loves them, from neil studying andrew constantly, and both jeremy and jean filing away every little detail in their minds. How they each take note of when injuries have healed, when the other is most at ease, what makes them tense, what makes them happy?? To be loved is to be known and all that

neil josten who mistakes sexual frustration as being straight up angry at andrew for reasons he can't decipher. he has no excuse to even be mad at andrew but he feels like he is and he's stewing and simmering and seconds from exploding. so wound up and just glaring at andrew all the time as andrew goes about his life in his usual unbothered fashion. and then andrew shuts down the goal one day fully expecting neil to be ecstatic, except neil essentially hits his limit and turns into a hissing spitting viper prattling on about nonsense like how andrew's eyelashes look in the sunlight and the way his nose is a little upturned at the end and how his arms are so stupidly fucking perfect and neil is furious about all of these things, obviously. meanwhile andrew, who spent quite a bit of time sexually frustrated and hating neil josten before he ever got to kiss him, has a sudden epiphany. because oh, would you look at that, the tables have turned... he does in fact suck neil's soul out through his dick until he's a puddle and plays with his hair while he naps and then neil wakes up and is like. oh. huh. i don't even what was i mad about.....

Why does no one talk about this???? Why does no talk about the fact that the only reason Neil loves exy, and loved it as a kid was because Mary encouraged it. Look, I get it, the little league games were training for his Edgar Allen audition. But if that was all it was, she wouldn’t clap and cheer in the stands. She wouldn’t have SMILED.

Idk, this little detail is so telling to me, but I don’t think I’ve seen anyone bring it up ever.

the beauty of andrew and neil's "what will you take?" / "what will you give me?" is that yes it's 'i won't ask for anything more than what you're willing to give', obviously that's a huge part of it, but equally so it's saying 'and what you do give, i will take.' give your back to me. put the weight of your trust on my shoulders and i will bear it. if you show me your worst parts, i won't flinch. i won't buckle. i won't run from you. it's both sides of that trust, coming from both of them. neil never touches andrew until he's given permission, and andrew never forces neil to give him any truths. neil learns about drake and the others, and he doesn't see andrew differently. andrew finds out about neil's father and his past and doesn't change his deal. between the two of them, it isn't just about giving but taking as well.

It only felt like it took forever. But I have finally finished The Golden Raven. And I feel like I’m going clinically insane. God it was so good and devastating. And I’m so anxious about what more she’ll do to us in the third book. And I so desperately need a few chapters at some point in Neil’s pov so I can know what the fuck is going on over there. God.
