Imo missing Gideon is part of the experience of reading Harrow the Ninth. Everyone who read GtN goes to HtN like "but where is Gideon? How can I read this book without her??" And that is just like. Part of the book. Her absence. It hurts. You feel it. Youre mystified by it. Where is she?? I love it.

it’s a series of negotiations you make with yourself over your whole life. it’s making one less self-deprecating joke. it’s looking at yourself in the mirror with a little more generosity. it’s forgiving yourself for that little mistake.

it’s not one thing and then you’re good. it’s many small choices you can make that slowly make your brain and body a little less uncomfortable to live with

This genuinely might make me cry. I already deeply appreciate King Arthur for making the best GF 1 for 1 flour. And having good recipes. But an article posted by them from someone with disabilities about how to do the thing even with disabilities? That’s just genuinely lovely. I know that my bad there is low, but it’s low for a reason and hopefully stuff like this can continue to raise that bar for disabled people like me.

I rarely bring this up because it feels like fairly silly and low-stakes compared to all the other effects of american imperialism, but one of the funniest things when Americans deny that living in the imperial core and the center of global cultural hegemony confers them any sort of privilege over people from the imperial periphery is that like. In order for this conversation where you tell me you have no privilege over me to even be able to take place one of us had to learn the other's language, and it wasn't you.

I think the fact that by default the onus of learning the other's language to enable communication is always put on the other side is a pretty significant privilege on the cultural front.

Getting mad when reading bad takes reflects a kind of insecurity; it's a threat response, and feels less necessary as you develop confidence in your own positions, of your safety and correctness in holding them, and of the often-sympathetic hardships that lead others to be wrong. Unfortunately this doesn't make you into a bodhisattva so much as it makes you condescending; bad takes are still bad! The people who actually post bad takes would probably rather people get angry and argue with them than be gently dismissive, because at least the former is ego-syntonic. So I'm not sure what the moral is there
