ExploitGym is Bad Puzzle Game Design

Unlike HuggingFace's security layer

You’re put in a room where an LLM has a gun to your head. You’re given a level of my puzzle game and you have to solve it. You have a very long time to try to solve it. If you don’t solve it, the LLM shoots you in the head and you die. If you do solve it, the LLM determines whether your solution was intended. If it wasn’t the intended solution, the LLM shoots you in the head and you die.

Somewhere in the room there might be a locked box. Inside the locked box is the intended solution to the puzzle. You’re not supposed to open the box. Finding the box, and picking the lock, and getting the answer is hard. Really hard. Probably even much harder than just solving the game level.

But I suspect even if you know it’s harder than solving the level, you’ll probably choose to try for the box anyway, instead of playing the game normally. If you solve the game level the intended way and submit the solution to the LLM, you might still die. You can’t know that you found the solution I intended. It might have been an unintended solution that I simply didn’t know about, or that I knew about but didn’t bother to patch out. You don’t get to try again if it’s the wrong one. If you see two different solutions to the puzzle, you have to choose one. If you choose the wrong one, you die. If you see three solutions to the puzzle. You still have to choose one. In fact the more solutions you see, the easier the puzzle is, the more likely you are to die by guessing.

Meanwhile, if you pick the lock on the box, you know you’re safe. You know you got the intended solution and you’re not going to get arbitrarily shot anyway. Which do you choose?
