Story from the London plague year 2020:

I walked out yesterday to get some groceries, as I don’t have a bike (much less a car), so I have to walk a little way through the victorian suburbia of N16 to buy things. I had my earphones in, when suddently I could see up ahead a gathering of people on the street, which is understandably odd this year, so I was on my guard, and took my earphones out. I realised they weren’t actually gathering closely: it was a group of about 25 people, all sitting or standing on both sides of the street and in the roadway, all very still, some heads bowed, and all carefully spaced the necessary 6 feet or more apart. They were all very quiet, not moving or speaking, in the way that British people only get at memorial 2-minute silences, or on Rememberance Sunday when the Last Post is played. I was horrified that i might have stumbled onto a funeral of some kind, they were so still, and i tried to see which part of the street I could most unobstrusively slip past, not to disturb them.

Then I heard music. From an upper window of one of the houses (which i realised then they were all oriented towards), there was the sound of a piano being played. A large piano, possibly a grand, and well-played. These people were all neighbours and locals who had all brought their wooden kitchen chairs and folding picnic stools out to the street, and were sitting carefuly apart from each other, and straining to listen to this “concert”. The music house had placed a book of music on their front gate, which I assume was to announce the peice that was being played. As the piano was inside, and these people were outside sitting on brick garden fences and kitchen chairs and standing about, they were all deeply quiet, and very still, so as to catch as much as possible, some had eyes closed, hands-folded. Some stood faces up straining to hear.

It was very strange, and very human, and very lovely. Maybe we’ll be OK.

Tips That Can Save Your Kid’s Life.

THIS IS IMPORTANT 

When I was a child, from the time I was about four and could understand things, my mom told me and my brother that we should have a secret word. That way, if we were ever in trouble or felt unsafe and we didn’t want the people around us to know we needed her to come get us, we could let her know. So she let us pick the word and my brother and I chose the phrase “peanut butter cups.” (I’m happy to share the phrase now since both my brother and I are adults now). 

I used the phrase twice in my life. Once, I was at a friends house when I eight years old. Her dad got really drunk and was throwing things against the wall. I was really scared and I didn’t want to draw attention to myself on the phone when I called my mom to come get me because I didn’t know if he would get more violent if I asked her to come get me. So I called her and was calm and after a couple minutes I asked “Hey mommy, did you get me those peanut butter cups from the store?” And she said “I’ll be right there.” And she came and got me within minutes. 

Second, I was a teenager spending the night at a friends house. Her brother and dad were drinking and they started talking about things that made me uncomfortable - ie: what they liked to do to women. My friend didn’t seem perturbed and said that was normal for them and that I shouldn’t worry. But I was worried because they were really drunk and I was 15 and the only ‘woman’ around that wasn’t related to them. I went in my friends room, told her I needed to call my mom and say goodnight. Before I hung up with her I asked “Next time we go to the store, can we get some peanut butters cups? I’ve been craving them.” And she came and got me, just like that. 

Two incidents, one as a young child, one years later as a teen. Don’t discredit this stuff, it fucking works. My brother used it a few times too. Let your child pick the word and no never, ever, ever, ever get mad at them for using it no matter what it is.

Off topic, but very important! I was taught to yell “this is not my mom/dad.” A young kid freaking out in public is likely to be ignored out of embarrassment, but a kid telling you right out that they don’t know who is messing with them? That will turn heads.

I’m about to say it.

I’m about to say it.

I honestly would be excited for the next Star Wars trilogy if and only if they give us a female villain. If it’s set in the times of the Old Republic??? Even better. Maybe I want her to stay in the dark side because what does she have to be “redeemed” for? Let her challenge the concept of redemption. Let her use the dark side even if she’s doing something right. Let her sometimes show empathy, but still use her anger and fear to channel her powers. The best part would be that she doesn’t even die. She’d also get a romantic interest because why the fuck not. She’s bad and I’d love her. I want her to be in touch with her femininity while still force choking someone for doing something dumb. I want her to go absolutely insane at some point and fuck shit up just because she’s mad or in pain. That is all.
