@fried-spider-legs
One thing I don't often see people talk about in Steven Universe.
In the series most of Stevens powers come from a need to protect those around him. His shield, his bubble, healing spit/tears, all designed, and come from the desire to, protect those around him. With the exception of his floating which comes from a sense of joy and happiness.
In Future his new powers stem from a subconscious need to protect himself, instead of a need to protect others. He's dealing with a lot and his powers are reacting in an explosive way to keep him safe. Super speed to escape a dangerous situation, explosive screams to throw the threat away from him, and panels, thicker and stronger than his shield and bubble, to shield him from the perceived threat.
Which then makes me wonder, since Pink on Homeworld was known for destructive "temper tantrums" how often she must've felt so unsafe, scared and unhappy that her powers reacted the way Stevens do in Future.
When she became Rose Quartz she felt confident, comfortable and more safe as Rose than as Pink. She had a strong desire to protect the Earth and the Crystal Gems, developing her powers into the ones we see most in the show.
was saying before that Witchers should be even more unsettling in their biology
honestly I should just start posting Gross Headcanons
The potions they take? Affect how they smell for hours if not days in some cases. Basically seeps out of their pores. And not all of them are pleasant. White honey is nice enough, just smells like honey. But cat? Smells like old socks. Golden oriole smells like a musty basement. Black blood smells like rotting flesh and old blood. Tawny owl smells like bird guano. You always know when a witcher's been working hard because they stink.
In the past they would accept kids as payment, either directly from people who had no other way of paying for their services, or through the Law of Surprise. Sometimes that meant literal infants, even just days-old newborns that they'd have to raise until they were old enough to be trained and eventually put through the Trial of the Grasses. Junior's gotta be fed somehow. Do you really think Witcher schools were full of wet nurses? Nah, there's a potion for that. Witcher milk is rumored to have all sorts of curative powers and to increase the baby's chance of surviving the grasses when they're older. Vesemir raised at least a few kids like this centuries ago. Don't bother him about it, he'll just smack you upside the head and tell you to mind your business.
Witchers have a resistance to nearly all diseases, which realistically means they are also resistant to food poisoning and can basically eat anything, including food that's gone off or is even rotting. It's nobody's preference but if they're hungry enough they'll literally kill a whole pack of ghouls and steal their carrion lunch. Who wants a bit of day-old horse carcass in the middle of August? How about a few roasted rats? Some fish just slightly past its prime? Whatever, pass the salt.
Oh, and they definitely have a tapetum lucidum to go with those cat-slit pupils, if you have a witcher staying over, don't freak out if you get up at 3am to go take a piss and see eyes glowing from across the room. They have excellent night vision. Don't see color so well as they did before the grasses, everything's a little washed out in broad daylight, but them's the breaks.
Their sense of smell isn't quite as good as a dog's, but it's a damn sight better than an unmutated human's. They can tell a lot about people. The young ones sometimes have to learn the hard way to not blurt out embarrassing shit about other people's health problems and menstrual cycles and early pregnancies.
Guess I gotta finish game freaks designs for them

continuing on from my first phm au post for dispatch. assorted thoughts about what alien chad would look like:
in this au, chad comes from a volcanic planet, meaning that is both much hotter (and full of magma) and have a lot of treacherous terrain.
basing his home planet on irl LP 791-18d, which is a known earth-sized exoplanet that is said to be potentially rocky and be heavily volcanic.
i don’t have a decided name for his home planet yet. (update: the planet name is crateris)
so, to adapt to this his skin is highly heat-resistant with thick, obsidian-like (or silica-like) armor to withstand the extreme heat.
chad does have thick “hair”, or something similar to hair or fur, but it is very different from human hair. being sort of similar to hair found on spiders. it is adapted to the heat and fire of the volcanic landscape, and acts as a specialized sensory organ that detects shifts in the air pressures or gasses. and it serves as additional UV protection.
this hair/fur is also able to catch volcanic ash and other debris (yeti crab style), and keep certain substances from directly touching the skin. so, his species makes a point to regularly clean themselves by preening and self-grooming (like birds and cats).
chad does have a long portion of “hair” around his head and neck, which he can tie up (his species did invent “hair ties” and it was a very important invention for them).
has a set of four "horns", one set along the sides of his head and one along the back of it. these horns are pretty dense due to immense accumulation of minerals within the body. act as heat radiators and sexual display.
he has a set of "arms" at the front, and another set of smaller arms. along with a pair of powerful legs. the front arms and the legs are primarily the ones used for mobility and transversing, while the smaller arms are used for holding and carrying.
both the arms and the legs have a form of climbing, grasping “four-fingered” appendages at the ends, like how human hands are used. allowing for full-body climbing and high-dexterity.
to aid in climbing and grasping (and defense), each “hand” has a set of thick, dexterous claws at the ends to help with climbing and navigating, and other things such as defense or hunting. but they don't really prevent from things like tool-using, or interacting with things like technology. the claws on the hands of the smaller set of arms are slightly smaller, while the ones on the front arms and back feet are slightly larger.
he may have a low center of gravity due to having to transverse harsh landscapes on his home planet, but that doesn't stop him from standing on his hind legs too. just depends on how fast he needs to go.
and he does have a tail to help with balancing. and he does openly wonder why robert doesn’t seem to have one and how he balances without one.
“why don’t you have a tail?” “oh my god chad, you can’t just ask someone why they don’t have a tail!”
and the tail is prehensile.
he also has body markings (or "tattoos") on certain parts of his body. which sort of resemble what if you carved things into live volcanic rock and there was bright fiery magma underneath. kind of like scarification.
in particular, he has a specific intricate markings along his left arm. these ones are reminders of his family back home. he looks at, and runs his hand over these markings often, so he can remember why he went on this mission in the first place. (but he is still very homesick)
his eyes are kind of unique in that they’re not the typical eyes that you see on creatures on earth, but are instead of set of several specialized eye slits”. that function kind of like pit organs on a snake.
each of the slits has a "protective lens" that keeps ash and other foreign material out.
the internal part of the slits are lined with specialized cells that help him see through thick volcanic smog and areas with no light or that are low-light.
and the "insides" of the eye slits glow a fiery amber color that is visible to robert.
robert: wait, i don't have a purple wire? i have a blue, a green, and a yellow. chad: {looking at the wires} that's weird. i have medium purple, light purple, and dark red. robert: you do??? chad: {thinks for a second before realizing what the disconnect is} ohhh. motherfucker. i forgot. my bad! i’m colorblind!
the thing above is mainly a joke, but i think that alien chad would very likely use a form of infrared vision to see and navigate his surroundings. so, he sees on a spectrum of purples, reds, and heat signatures rather than the typical color spectrum that humans see.
chad and his species actually evolved to be filter feeders, specifically feeding on aerial plankton found in their planet’s atmosphere as a result of the volcanic ash and dust (aeroplankton). basically, they had to be able to utilize the large amounts of volcanic ash around them, so they evolved to feed on the microscopic organisms/nutrient-rich debris present in the atmosphere.
however, his species also feeds on some larger animals that dwell on their planet. being opportunistic, and possibly making up for whatever nutrients that they can’t get from filter feeding by getting it from other animals.
so, they have an alternating system of switching between filter-feeding and hunting/feeding on non-microscopic prey. and many of those creatures have thick outer-layers to protect from the extreme heat and magma, so they have evolved to have both a strong jaw and very durable set of teeth that can bite through outer shells and thick skin (probably teeth that are as strong as their skin due to absorbing minerals from their food and environment).
chad: what’s this? {holding a jawbreaker} robert: it’s a jawbreaker. it’s a kind of candy that we make on earth. it’s supposed to be really hard to break. hence the name. chad: oh. … {curious} {pops it into his mouth and starts to bite and chew it up like it’s a piece of gum} robert: {bewildered by the sight} chad: {still casually chewing it up} it’s really not that hard. are human jaws just weak?
as for how they talk and breathe, they don’t need to open their mouths to speak. and they don’t have noses on their faces. instead, they have a set of larger “gill-like” slits on the sides of their neck. these are used both to breathe and to “speak”.
and chad does wear clothes, both for aesthetics reasons and his own personal comfort. specifically thickened clothing lined with silicon/heat-resistant material. (he does think that he's more fashionable than robert too)
and he's extra stylish, so he also has several piercings that are made from a material found on his planet, which is very similar to tungsten.
Since Markiplier is the husband of an Atiny and has sung Ateez during one of his videos before, I'm just gonna drop this here and say:
This man made a whole-ass movie based on an indie horror game, brought in the original creator of the game to assist in script writing, brought in the original video game soundtrack composer to create the movie score, funded the project by himself, brought in his own crew he's worked with on all his previous large-scale filming projects, and built a goddamn render farm in his own bathroom because he edited the entire movie by himself and needed custom cooling after his AC blew up.
On top of that, he also halted production while the SAG-AFTRA strike was going on to show support, turned down a role in 'Five Nights at Freddy's' so he could keep working on this project, and broke the world record for most fake blood ever used on a movie set, beating out 'Evil Dead' which used 190,000 liters - and he even got so much of it into his eye that it got him sent to the hospital during the shooting of this first teaser:
And now, as someone who's been a fan of this guy for over a decade, I can tell you he really, really doesn't know how to half-ass shit, which is why I know this movie will be fucking incredible, and now that tickets are finally on sale with the release of the final trailer, I better be seeing them selling out like crazy so we can get international screenings, because I DIDN'T WAIT TWO WHOLE FUCKING YEARS FOR THIS, JUST SO I CAN'T WATCH IT IN A GODDAMN THEATER!
I also think choosing the line "I just wanna live... is that so wrong? Why doesn't anybody else want that?" is a really gut-wrenching way to end a horror movie trailer and says a lot about where this movie's focus will lie - fear, isolation, a desperate need for survival, and honestly, that's the direction I was really hoping this would go in.
Shout out to the TWO set medics on Iron Lung
After seeing what that man put himself though I bet they had only one and partway through filming they were like "yeah this guy is a hazard, can we get another in here?"
woooo flambae family headcanon time! i wanted to figure these out for a future fic where rob meets the whole fam and i gotta say, it was so much fun!
dynamics wise, flambae is very close and loving with all his sisters in their own unique ways. he’s especially protective of fariba, and has been incredibly supportive of her self-discovery journey. they were each other’s first person to come out to :”) they were old enough at the time of living with their biological father to remember everything he’s done and they’ve bonded over that shared trauma. atifa is the fun sister, and it’s prone to get VERY loud and chaotic when she gets together with zahir. she lives in seattle with her wife, so they only ever meet up for parties and holidays. they’re like two peas in a pod. adhara is the one physically closest to zahir, and naturally bridged the gap between him and her daughter. zahir feels terrible for not being there for her at her hardest (pregnancy + birth + mishal’s first couple years) due to being in so much trouble with the law. he’s trying to make up for it by being the best uncle in the universe, even if his skin crawls over all the mecha man paraphenalia in her bedroom. he's also very close with his parents, even if they don't get to see each other as often as before. they've retired to san francisco and are very content 🙂↕️ they don't blame zahir for the unsavory things he's done and understand his upbringing was complicated and far from the best.
Back in the God AU. Was thinking about the Z-Team’s first festival. At the moment, the gods only have the one celebration since their people are still figuring out what’s sacred to their gods (like places, animals, colors, etc.)
This isn’t Robert’s first festival. Astral had a big one in the central lands. He was more of a guard than a participant, occasionally giving insight into what would please Astral
But those festivals were orderly and traditional, more formal ceremony than wild celebrations. The Z-Team’s festival is not like that. Perhaps owing to having gods with domains in things such as performances, games, bonfires, and drugs—among others—this festival feels more about the people than the deity their worshiping
Not knowing how to feel about it, Robert tries keeping his distance as a guard again. The Z-Team don’t let him. In their mortal forms, they drag him around the city to participate in nearly every activity and eat all the delicious food and definitely drink more than he should
Feeling like he’s fought twelve titans on his own in the morning, Robert sets a new objective of separating the Z-Team’s festivals
I really like the headcanon that Robert made his own car from scratch, because it makes Flambae and Robert both car guys but in like. Opposite ways.
Flambae has his firebird, and I can just imagine he takes SUCH good care of it. Has one trusted mechanic who is allowed to work on it and NO ONE else. Only he can drive his car, and don’t even think about eating in it. The seats are custom, and he has special lights installed. When Phenomaman crushed it he MOURNED and raced it to the mechanic like his child was dying in his arm.
Robert drove his car into four walls last week and he’s looking to make it five. He knows every single inch of it back and forth, but if anyone else even tried to look under the hood they’d start crying in confusion. It’s specialized especially to him and is amazing in fuel efficiency and speed, but if you turn the key wrong it explodes.
And if they started dating ?? Flambae knows that objectively Robert is very skilled with mechanics. He is more than capable of fixing any car issue that pops up. He would trust him with his life, and soul, and heart. He loves him more than life itself.
Robert is NOT allowed within a hundred feet of his car with any kind of tool.
Mecha Man Foxtrot
("Foxtrot" is used in radio talk to represent the letter "F" but also "fire" - its said by attack pilots just before firing missiles/bullets to warn other pilots to avoid potential friendly fire.)
Semi sequel to this idea of wasian!Robert having a Korean grandma.
I do love AUs of Robert either having powers, or hiding a hybrid state. So as I was writing the idea about his Grandmother, I had a thought' "What if she was a hybrid or another non-human supernatural being?"
Like say, one that's been seen as the default "Villain" in Korean folklore for centuries?
The Kumiho/Gumiho/구미호 (literally "nine-tailed fox") is an extremely powerful fox spirit from Korean mythology. Although similar to the nine-tailed Japanese Kitsune or Chinese Huli Jing, it does not have as great of a reputation. If it appears in a story, it is almost always used as a villainous or tragic character. Some of the earliest depictions had the Gumiho be a manifestation of godly spirits, the black furred Gumiho being especially sacred. The influence of Buddhist and Confucian beliefs slowly warped the fox into a character representing malevolence or trickery.
It should be noted that "Gumiho" is only used for the nine-tailed variant of the spirit; any other are typically referred to as "yeowoo/여우" (fox spirit), "maegu/매구" (fox demon), or "hogwi/호귀" (fox ghost). Though the latter can become the former through either age, energy cultivation, or a pious lifestyle.
(Useful links for info; "video on the different asian fox spirits" + "wikipedia entry")
So what does that mean for the Robertson family?
Quite a bit.
Bobby Robertson still falls in love with a fiery Korean woman while stationed overseas, and the two marry and have a son. The only major difference being that Su-jin Robertson is a shapeshifting semi-immortal nine-tailed fox spirit that's passed her power onto her lineage.
Robbie, despite being born a fox spirit like his mother, hides this aspect of himself from the public. Using hats, clothes, and bindings to hide whatever "inhuman" part of himself comes loose. In his mind, to be a hero for the common person, he needs to "just" be human and nothing else.
However, there is one aspect of his supernatural heritage that Robbie utilised.
In Korean folklore, fox spirits are able to condense a great deal of power and knowledge into a small marble, not unlike a dragonball. They also can use this marble to steal the lifeforce of men by passing it into their mouths and back - kinda like kissing someone who's chewing gum. Needless to say, a few myths show the result of the human target ingesting the Kumiho's marble - giving them divine knowledge and power at the cost of a tainted soul. The human in question is either the hero of the story being preyed upon by the fox spirit, or her husband who she gives the marble to willingly.
In Robbie's case, he used his marble for something a little more... mechanical.
Robbie: "Hey, I can compress part of my life energy into a marble-sized orb. Wanna see if we can make a unique energy source out of it?" Elliot, confused: "Uh, ok. Sure!" Su-jin, elsewhere: "...I think my son just proposed to someone."
It's why the unique energy cell cannot be replicated. Robbie, in a literal sense, put his heart and soul into the Pulse. Sacrificed part of himself to be a hero.
Robert pops into existence completely on accident! Su-jin is just glaring at Robbie and Elliot for, in her mind, eloping and having a baby without consulting her first. Oh well, now she has a grandkit to spoil!
Robert's hold on his powers is a lot more shaky, since whatever his dad discouraged, his grandmother embraced. Should he hide what he is and be treated like an average human? Or does he embrace his mixed heritage and risk being discrimination?
This leads to an anxious "normie"-presenting man that occasionally turns into a half or full fox demon when he's overwhelmed, but presents as fully-human as a Hero.
Very few people know what Mecha Man truly is, besides his grandmother. Trackstar/Chase learned about Robert's hybrid form when the latter was a small child. The human boy crying for his parents, only to shift into a still-crying fox kit. The speedster quickly picked up a book on fox behaviour in order to better understand how the kid felt and expressed himself. Chase always humoured the little guy when he wanted to race him.
Another person who knows that Mecha Man isn't what he claims to be is someone who got a little too close during a fight...
Flambae had managed to breech the suit's cockpit, reaching his hand inside in hopes of tearing the pilot out like a oyster in it's shell. He then remembers feeling distinctly non-human teeth clamping on his right hand - severing two of the fingers.
The fire-starter was ignored when he claimed Mecha Man; "Was just a dog in a man's clothing". After all, he was just a villain talking smack.
But now this "Robert" guy has started working at SDN, and he seems to be putting on an act....
Robert begins to genuinely question how he feels about his identity after the destruction of the Mech Suit, and the loss of the Astral Pulse. Does he continue living as a "normal" human as he's had for the last 15 years? Or does he open his heart to instincts long since buried to people who might understand him better?
He might not have a choice really. His body did not take kindly to an explosion and a coma, in addition to a decade-and-a-half of using unsafe means of hiding his animal side. It's gotta come out somehow.
(*in the breakroom in Ep 2*) Sonar, echo-locating: "AAHH!" Robert, at vending machine: "AH!" (*fox ears and tails pop out on reflex*) Sonar, intrigued: "Whoa. Didn't expect that. I was just looking for my lunchbox." Robert, trying to hide his fox features like he's fixing his hair: "At least warn somebody when you're about to scream like that, okay?" Sonar: "My bad... Didn't know our new dispatcher was a hybrid." Robert (lie): "I have no idea what you're talking about." Sonar: "You literally have a tail dude." Robert, looks behind him: "Shit." Sonar, sly look: "So, are you like... one of those fox spirts that turns into big tittied anime women?" Robert, tiredly: "No. I'm the kind that eats human livers." Sonar, disappointed: "Oh well, nobody's perfect."
Yes, Sonar is very much into Robert in this AU. Him wanting to get together with his hot dispatcher and make a flying fox, if you know what I'm saying.
Flambae is into it too, despite being like 50% sure that the bitch-ass fox-man might be the guy who bit two of his fingers off.
No matter who Robert falls for though, they are not prepared for the "fox love scream" that they do when they see their life mate. XD
Wondering what yall think of this AU. It's one part "Robert having an identity crisis over his inherited role as Mecha Man and not being fully human" and another part "adorable fox moments". :3
