Harry Potter Fic Rec

Title: The Pensive Project

Pairings: Drarry, Seamus Finnigan/Daphne Greengrass

Summary: Of the 116 Hogwarts students who took part in the final battle, only five are officially invited to the Ministry's first annual memorial. For everyone else, there's the Pensieve Project.

Comments: The reason I like this fic is because it focuses on Draco. It's not explicitly AU, but you can tell that this Hogwarts is a more united one than cannon. It shows how Draco has changed a year after the battle. There's a lot of Slytherin/Gryffindor friendship. Neville and Draco are bros. It's funny and at the same time thoughtful. Definitely worth a read.

Ouran High Host Club Fic Rec

Title: In the Circle of Elemental Arms

Pairings: None

Warnings: Fantastic Violence, Attempted Rape Scene, Sex Dream

Summary: Magic runs strong in the students of Ouran, even in one klutzy scholarship student

Comments: This is an amazingly well built world. It's populated by elementals who can control one of the seven elements (Earth, Wind, Water, Fire, Lightning, Light, and Dark), and normals. Ouran is one of the best schools that teaches young elementals. It loosely follows the story of the anime, focusing a lot more on Haruhi as a person (showing how she grows as the story moves on) and a mystery that relates to the world of elementals. The other characters are fleshed out beautifully as well. The friendship between these seven is strong, and it's an all around amazing fic.

Title: We Were The Potters

Comments: THE MOST SOUL CRUSHING, HEART BREAKING HARRY POTTER FIC I’VE EVER READ. Its written beautifully and read painfully and it really opens your eyes to how Rowling’s last sentence “All was well” never happens in real life. I thought I might as well ring in my introduction to this blog with the fic that makes me cry every time I read it.

Title: From Where I Stand, You're In My Sky

Pairings: Merlin/Arthur {past Merlin/Will, slight Arthur/Superman; it almost makes sense in context}

Length: 17k

Summary: AU. Arthur looks away from the terrified, accusing dark eyes of the man on the newspaper, and turns his attention to his breakfast.

Comments: I read this AU last night before going to bed at like two in the morning and there were superheroes and I don't know whether it was the late night or my soft spot for Merlin superhero AUs but I fell in love with this. Its written from Arthur's perspective and you literally FEEL his character god. I can't get over how well they've written Arthur's emotions. The ending felt a bit abrupt but I can understand why they ended it there instead of making it "and then nothing bad ever happened and everyone lived happily ever after the end".

Title: Living With Danger

Summary: AU, first in the main Dangerverse series, now complete. Lone wolf. Dream-seer. Bright child. Scarred child. Singer. Prisoner. Dancer child. Dragon child. Eight semi-ordinary people. One extraordinary family, and how they became one. Pre-Hogwarts story.

Comments: So I know that this is one of the most well known fics in the Harry Potter fandom (it is basically the equivalent to The Student Prince or Cold Body, Warm Heart) but there are several people who haven't discovered the joy of Dangerverse yet, and that is a tragedy. Imagine what would happen if Hermione Granger had an older sister who was 20 years older than she was. This older sister just happens to live down the street from one Harry Potter, and just happens to run into one Remus Lupin in the park. together they decide that Harry's living situation is shit, and with the help of a friend, break Harry out of number 4, Sirius out of Azkaban, and go on the run. Anne is a spectacular writer, and you'll probably end up reading the series by the week's end. Year seven of Dangerverse, Surpassing Danger, is currently a WIP. 10/10 recommendation, but you need to be invested because these fics are loooonnnngggg.

Title: Things Never Go Well (Until They Do)

Summary: Captain Kirk is abducted by slavers during a diplomatic, First Contact celebration. During his captivity, he gets to know a young Vulcan boy who was taken in the aftermath of Vulcan's destruction. Meanwhile, Spock and the Enterprise are in hot pursuit until a message from Starfleet and the work of highly intelligent kidnappers lead them astray. Kirk will do anything to protect the boy. Spock will do anything to recover his bondmate. But this is Captain Kirk... and for some reason, the universe just wants to kick him in the face one more time. (No rape, no non-con; just your average BAMF!Spock and protective!Kirk - will be a series)

My comments: The first fic in a really cute series. This fic isn’t really a kid!fic but the rest of the series is. There is some angst and hurt/comfort but ultimately there is a happy ending.

LOTR Fic Rec

Title: A SCA Girl in Middle-Earth

Pairings: Boromir/OFC, Aragorn/Arwen, OC/OC (one-sided) 

Summary: You know those stories where people from the 21st Century fall into Middle-Earth and can instantly understand the language, seamlessly fit into strange cultures and communities who aren't even slightly suspicious about mysterious strangers during wartime, and are generally loving it?

Not This Time.

Dropped into a save-the-world quest with a Mary-Sue, a friend and a random annoying stranger, THIS girl would generally love to get back to plumbing, daily hot showers, a lack of things trying to kill her, and reading material in ENGLISH, please.

My Comments: A brilliantly written, half satire, half parody story, for those of us who can't stand a Mary Sue. It's a self insert, but an awesome one. It's a work in progress, but if you like it, check out the author's "Very Different Cliches" series, which follow a similar premise

Les Mis Rec

Title: You Should Have Told Me

Summary: Modern AU - Grantaire is a writer under a pen name and Enjolras has discovered his new favourite author. They meet through a series of debates on the train in the mornings.

My Comments: This is cuter than the average E/R fic, but contains the usual elements: Grantaire is a self-deprecating little shit and Enjorlas is full of righteous anger. Also Enjorlas needs his morning debate like normal people need a cup of coffee or a cigarette break. I find the Courf/Jehan subplot to be a little unnecessary, but the story as a whole is awesome.

Summary: Once upon a time there was a prince of an island kingdom that was of age and had to marry to ascend to the throne, but none of the suitors, neither prince nor princess, made his heart leap. There was only one man who did that and he was no royal. Prince Jim hoped for a miracle but knew there would be none to allow him to marry the healer that had stolen his heart.

Comments: A little fluffy, a little angsty, but ultimately quite funny. Fairy tale AU.

Merlin Rec

Title: A Modern Manservant

Summary: A modern magical comedy very loosely based on Ugly Betty. Publishing king Uther Pendragon has had enough of his playboy son seducing every female assistant he has ever had so he hires Merlin, a man he is sure Arthur will never sleep with. Merlin would be more insulted by this fact if he wasn’t so busy trying to juggle his duties, save Arthur's skin from ruthless fashionistas and keep his magic a secret at the same time. Expect appearances by oil-lathered knights, the occasional mad druid, a perverted Will and a mental caretaker who lives in the basement and keeps harping on about coins and destiny.

Comments: You don't need to have watched Ugly Betty to read this fic! Arthur starts off as a massive arse, like even moreso than usual, and you spend most of the fic feeling very sorry for poor Merlin who has to put up with a lot of crap. Brilliantly written, very funny, and bit of a slow burn, because these two take forever to realize that they're in love.

Title: I Appear to Have Conjured the Spirit of a Banker

Summary: While getting a little bit tipsy with Freya, Merlin performs a spell to discover the identity of his one true love. He is a bit disappointed. Sure, Arthur is gorgeous, but he is also difficult, grumpy, apparently taken, by a woman at that, and he's not easily impressed by magic tricks. (Title is a quote from Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.)

Comments: Merlin is sweet, Arthur is an arse, and Freya is a bit creepy. Also they have a bearded dragon named Kilgarrah. It's an overall sweet and funny fic.
