the phasmid in disco elysium has to be in the 99.99th percentile of effectiveness for characters that, when i actually interacted with them first, changed my perception of the entire world a piece of media had built up. like DE, pre-phasmid, has some wondrous magical realism kind of elements that appear more as you progress (the existence of the pale and its whole deal, harry’s skills allowing him insight he should not have, etc) that juxtapose some of the more gritty and real aspects (we’re investigating a murder here. and an extremely politically and emotionally charged one at that) but i just feel like the phasmid’s appearance really solidifies that yes, this game does feature serious topics and interactions that are desperate and sad and violent, but oh my god we have to keep going. like oh my GOD we have to keep living so bad. there’s hope and here is wonder still undiscovered by the rest of the world. there’s more to see out there and while we have that we have to continue seeking it out. things can be strange and impossible and beautiful and so sad at the same time and i want to see it all. all bc this big fuck-off insect that looks like a clump of reeds told me to do it for the working class. nods. okay phasmid. okay

i think my favorite facet of hornet's personality that has been revealed to us over the course of silksong is that she is hypercompetitive and obsessed with games but insists on pretending like she is Far Too Serious And Busy For Mere Games... and then she immediately follows that up by being like. but of course. it is always worth my time to hone my skills for the coming trials.... i will participate. she'll take the last handful of rosaries off a doomed pilgrim and take the dice he used to gamble em away too. she's just that into it.

i think team cherry is above the gimmicky game design of adding a fishing minigame to silksong but i think if they had it still would have felt right because i can believe in a world where hornet would actually as a character want to spend her time fucking around fishing instead of trying to undoom the kingdom. whatever. not her first doomed kingdom she will get to it when she gets to it. she needs to catch a big swordfish so she can mount it in her bellhome. it would be enrichment for her.

yknow its interesting how something can impact one demographic in a completely different way than everyone else. in the exorcist when the demon starts speaking in greek, to most people its creepy. but if youre greek and you suddenly start hearing the demon speak perfect fucking greek its genuinely the biggest scare of the movie. you just do not expect to ever hear your language in american movies so it catches you so badly off guard, it feels like the movie is talking directly to you
