CAM: I was notified that we lost âTHE KING TIGER,â Mr. Reies Lopez Tijerina at the age of 88 years old this week (1/19/2015). I wanted to once again share the write up and photos I posted in of my 2012 attendance to view Mr. Tijerina speak as tribute to this tremendous advocate of human rights. REIES LOPEZ TIJERINA (1926-2015) REST IN PEACE.

REIES LOPEZ TIJERINA âTHE KING TIGERâ - March 29, 2012 @ California State University of Fullerton
CAM: On March 29th I was cordially invited by CSUF M.E.C.h.A to attend legend Reies Lopez Tijerina speak at California State University of Fullerton. My focus on this blog is The Chicano Art, but I wanted to share this great opportunity that I had to go see Mr. Tijerina speak and show you readers some of my images and thoughts of this great leader of social activisim for Mexican-American rights. At 85 years young you could still see the FIRE that breathes in Mr. Reies Lopez Tijerina as he told stories to an enamored crowd of CSUF students and faculty. Mr. Tijerina spoke to the crowd about a wide variety topics, from his humble upbringings to the not so âfriendlyâ relationship with the late Mr. Robert F. Kennedy. My favorite story he told was about the moments before he led an armed raid on the Rio Arriba County courthouse in Tierra Amarilla, New Mexico with his son and daughter at tow.
As you can see in a couple images above there was a limited edition print released of Mr. Reies Lopez Tijerina by Artist Armando Cepeda. If you are interested in purchasing a copy contact: [email protected] 12x18 offset edition 120 signed and numbered by A. Cepeda (Reies Lopez Tijerina signed copies exclusive to event)
via: CSUF M.E.C.h.A Reies LĂłpez Tijerina Founder, La Alianza Federal de Mercedes, and Civil Rights/Land Grant Activist Reies LĂłpez Tijerina was born on a mound of cotton sacks on Sept. 21, 1926, near Falls City, Texas, to a family of migrant workers. In his early life he served briefly as a minister with the Assemblies of God before founding a utopian community in Pinal County, AZ, in the early 1950s. He had risen from general obscurity as a roaming country preacher in the Southwest to international fame as one of the most daring revolutionary figures in United States history.
Tijerina created the Valley of Peace religious center in Southern Arizona in 1956. At about this time Tijerina learned of many families in the state of New Mexico who had been dispossessed of their ancestral lands. Tijerina had a mystic vision which he interpreted as a calling to move to New Mexico to help the Hispanos there reclaim legal jurisdiction over ancient land grants. He took up the cause of land-grant restoration in the 1960s and is best known as one of the earliest pioneers, and among the most influential social activists of the Mexican-American or Chicano Civil Rights Movement (although he best prefers the term Indo-Hispano). He is routinely identified as a warrior in the early social movements, along with CĂ©sar ChĂĄvez, the farm labor organizer in California; Colorado Chicano activist Rodolfo âCorkyâ Gonzales; and La Raza Unida Party co-founder JosĂ© Angel GutiĂ©rrez in Texas.
Reies LĂłpez Tijerina founded the Alianza Federal de Pueblos Libres (Federal Alliance of Land Grants) in New Mexico to reclaim Spanish and Mexican land grants held by Mexicans and Native Americans before the U.S.-Mexican War (nearly 100 million-acres). The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed after the U.S. victory over Mexico, guaranteed Mexican citizens the retention of their land grants. The Alianza hoped to reclaim ownership of land through the courts of New Mexico; however, it was determined in a court ruling that the United States Congress was the arbitrator on issues of land rights based on international treaties. Tijerina became famous when on June 5, 1967 he led an armed raid on the Rio Arriba County Courthouse in Tierra Amarilla, NM. This event brought the issue of land rights to national attention and became a stimulus for the Chicano movement. The raid climaxed in a 90-minute shoot-out at the court house of Tierra Amarilla when Alianzistas tried to make a citizenâs arrest of certain New Mexican officials. The incident turned New Mexico into a battleground and put Tijerina on the front pages of the worldâs newspapers.
In 1968, Tijerina unsuccessfully ran for governor of New Mexico with The Peopleâs Constitutional Party. He also collaborated closely with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on the Poor Peopleâs Campaign. Although Tijerina was found not guilty of the charges related to the courthouse raid, he eventually was convicted of charges stemming from the occupation of the amphitheater. He was jailed repeatedly and between June of 1969 and July of 1971 was held at in a federal penitentiary which led to the eventual dissolution of the Alianza, given the conditions of parole which included he could not speak about or lead any organization that addressed land grant issues.
They Called Me âKing Tigerâ: My Struggle for the Land and Our Rights is Reies LĂłpez Tijerinaâs autobiography. In it, he archived his actions during the uprooting of the 1960s Mexican-American Civil Rights Movement. He was the only one of the group to keep a record of his work to explain what brought him and his Federal Land Grant Alliance members to break the law. Challenging the New Mexico and national authorities, reclaiming part of a national forest reserve, and invading and taking over a courthouse won him the admiration of many young activists then and now.
Reies LĂłpez Tijerina currently lives in El Paso, TX with his wife Esperanza where they continue to speak out on indigenous land issues. He has received numerous awards, most recently the Mexican governmentâs âOhtliâ award in 2009 for his lifetime commitment to human and civil rights, and his enduring work and sacrifice to protect and improve the lives of generations of persons of Mexican descent living in the United States. In 2011, the city of Las Vegas, N.M., also presented him a key to the city.

Thank you, RamĂłn RenterĂa and the El Paso Times, for writing an appropriate and respectful obituary for Reies Lopez Tijerina.
Thank you, ABC News and Associated Press, for publishing this insulting and slipshod obituary of Reies Lopez Tijerina on the day of his death, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Powerful photos capture the student protests in Mexico barely anyone is talking aboutÂ
The unfolding protests gripping Mexico began in the small town of Iguala, in the southwest region of Guerrero state, where the disappearance of 43 student teachers on the night of Sept. 26 has sparked outrage amid allegations of collaboration between local police and organized crime.

US history, in which every single word of that sentence requires scare quotes.
I'm pretty sure some Anglo guy carefully planned National Hispanic Heritage Month so we start off mid-September celebrating Latin American independence movements and end mid-October on the note of cataclysmic mass genocide.Â
Happy Birthday Jaime Hernandez!
          Greatness.
Jaime!
do you have any morel inks about what's happening in mexico? im part of a club at my school where we focus on international affairs and problems and id like to present something about it but i feel like i dont know enough yet
yes absolutely
What is happening in Mexico?Â
How it began
On September 26, students our age (~19-22) were attacked by the local police and gangs in Iguala, Guerrero in Mexico. They were studying to become teachers at Escuela Normal Rural de Ayotzinapa. I have read many articles about how the students were in the town to ask for money to help pay tuition, to protest discrimination of rural school teachers, to travel to commemorate another student massacre of 1986, etc., so I am unsure of what is what here. But the students were on the buses and police blocked their way to get the students out. When they did, they opened fire on the students at once. Some students threw rocks back in self-defense, but the students were unarmed. Six people died and 17 were injured. Three students died, a taxi driver, a woman in a taxi, and a football player that was just 15 years old (x). The injured were taken away by an ambulance, local journalists came, etc but it was not over as more men came in plain clothes and rifles (x). These men are apart of Guerreros Unidos and work for the Beltran Leyva cartel. The students were forced into police vans and have since disappeared. 43 students are missing.
Some of the students escaped by hiding in nearby houses. One terrified student tried running away, but he was found later yet with his eyes gouged out and his face completely sliced away to the bone. A YOUNG MAN only 19 years old suffered through this. (As a warning, be aware that there are photos online and that while searching deep through articles and tags, they are present.) A survivor of the attack says this is âsymbol of the cartel assassinsâ (x).
22 local policemen have been detained for suspicion of working with Guerreros Unidos. This is how authorities were then tipped on what has happened to some students. (x) (x)
The Mass Graves
~ More than a week later, on Saturday, authorities found mass graves nearby that has 28 burned remains with the tips (x). We fear that this may be some of the students. We wonât have DNA analysis to confirm anything for another two weeks, if not longer.
MORE mass graves were found yesterday, but it is still unknown about how many remains these graves have (x).Â
Keep in mind that the CITY MAYOR AND HIS WIFE are on the RUN. No one knows where they are.Â
We still donât understand the reason behind this violence. Why kidnap and kill these young men? There are several explanations online, but how do you explain something like this? One story is that the mayerâs wife was giving a speech that day and did not want to be disrupted by the students. Keep in mind that the wife is the head of the cityâs family welfare department and also has family connections to cartels (x). There are other alternatives online, but I donât know. I just donât.Â
You cannot be silent about what is happening in Mexico
You canât. You just canât. Social media has a big impact and this story has to spread. In the last 24 hours I have seen an incredible boost in coverage about Ayotzinapa.
On Wednesday, thousands protested the disappearance of the students in Mexico.
Amounting pressure is being put on the Mexican government to find the missing students. There is also added outrage and demand âto punish politicians linked to organized crimeâ. It is no shock when considering the police corruption and brutality in Mexico. As Mexico bleeds, we all bleed.Â
Americans cannot ignore the violence of drug cartels and place it as just a problem in Mexico. There is too much innocent bloodshed. And because BILLIONS AND BILLIONS of dollars are collected in the United States by Mexican drug cartels, it is a shared responsibility (x). CHILDREN ARE DYING. Do not skim over these articles, do not just read them and do nothing, you have to act and spread the information. Do not be silent. Please, please, please help and pay attention.Â

2 Years Later: JosĂ© Antonio Elena RodrĂguezâs Mom Still Wants Answers
âWe want the U.S. government to stop killing our kids.â - Gabriela LĂłpez, JosĂ© Antonioâs aunt
Just after 11:30 p.m., two years ago Friday, the shots rang out.
A Border Patrol agent, aiming through a narrow opening in the border fence, emptied all 12 rounds from his .40-caliber pistol. He reloaded and continued firing, riddling a teenage boy in the back and head, leaving him face-down in a pool of his own blood.
The Border Patrol said the agent fired at rock-throwers; witnesses say the boy killed was just walking down the street.
During the two years since JosĂ© Antonio Elena RodrĂguez, 16, was shot to death, much has changed. New policies inside Customs and Border Protection, federal court rulings and public pressure are combining in ways that may help prevent similar contentious deaths.
But some things remain the same.
Two years on, Araceli RodrĂguez still seeks to know who killed her son and why.

THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW IN MEXICO
25 students where hurt and 43 disappeared in México because they where protesting on the streets. It is well known that the police was involved on the disappearances !!!!!!
Police isnât killing people just in Ferguson, its also happening in Iguala, Guerrero, MĂ©xico! HELP US SO EVERYBODY KNOWS HOW THE FUCKING GOVERNMENT IS CORRUPT AND THE MOTHER FUCKING PRESIDENT ISNâT DOING SHIT AT ALL!!!! PAULINA PENA, THE PRESIDENTâS DAUGHTER, IS ON VACATION IN EUROPE USING ALL OF OUR FUCKING MONEY WHILE THIS IS HAPPENING IN OUR COUNTRY!!!!!
For people in the US who may not take the term âdisappearedâ seriously. Authorities have now accounted for all 43 victims burned in 10 mass graves according to La Jornada. The story hasnât really made headlines in the US despite the size of the protests. You can read the story in WSJ and Aljazeera. You can also read Leon Krauze in TNR calling out Peña Nieto for inaction and saying helpful things like â[Corruption in Mexico] is a cultural matter.â
If the subject isn't drugs or immigration, the U.S. news canât be bothered.
Ayotzinapa somos todosÂ
It's important to pay attention. Â
All these gringos want to âhonorâ our rich cultural heritage but they donât even know who Los Bukis are. Â
Thatâs because these things didnât have basketball shoes and you canât rape them.
^^^^^^wouldja look at this racist fucker???
Yup. you started it. I can be racist too if thatâs the game you wish to start.
lol as if a minority calling out problems with an oppressive society is equivalent to perpetuating negative stereotypes about a diverse group of people who already suffer from racism and oppression on a daily basis lol man
As if couching the diverse white people of America as people who steal culture or countries isnât perpetuating a negative stereotype? What country in the world didnât take their land from someone else at some point? When America was settled, the Indians didnât even have Horses - the Spaniards brought them. And, the Indians were battling each other for land that was yet to be fully claimed and put on the map. Iâm not sure what religious figure we stole. The western white man has created culture and, especially now days, every culture except for Americanâs white culture is appreciated and encouraged. The only group on earth that is discouraged from, and called racist for, celebrating their own culture is the white people in America. Finally, the factual crime statistics clearly show the most crimes - including murder, store robberies, and especially rape, are committed by black people. So, the most controversial thing about what I said, is that it is true.
reverse racism isnt real bro im sorry
ur not actually discriminated against ever for being white bc u r part of the oppressors bro
u complain abt ur problems but u r only seeing symptoms of real oppression that u perpetuate that happen 2 have a negative effect towards u in addition 2 their devastating effects on minorities & women but u actually have it better than every other race/gender/nationality
u have privilege bro
dont b a crybaby
use ur privilege 2 help others
(native americans were doing fine w/o the horse btw that was irrelevant to the devastation that the europeans unleashed upon an outwardly peaceful group of people. also the europeans didnt think the native americans had souls so they would torture and kill them like animals unless they agreed to convert & abandon their own culture. also later the americans effectively committed genocide & stripped away the rights of the native americans bc they had no way to stop the us govt)
Well you make some interesting suggestions but Iâm not following all of them. Perhaps you can answer a couple questions - sincere questions, not being a smart ass.
regarding minorities getting preferential admittance into college and getting most the government contracts because minority status and female status are given priority when it comes to contracting with private enterprise. The only way I as a white business owner would get a government contract, at city, state, or Federal level, is if no minorities are women show up to claim it. So, based on what you said, how am I doing anything to cause that and how can you say that Iâm not hurt by such reverse discrimination?
How is it fair that there was a city who had a policy to hire the top scoring (however many) trainee fireman - a test given to them at the end of training. Well, all white guys were the top scoring and no black guys that took it even passed. So, the city lowered the standard and still, no black guys met the minimum requirement. They sued, and as a result, the black trainees were given the job and white guys that had already gotten hired were let go. How is that not hurting white guys?
Finally, our white American culture only fades away - we hardly have one and arenât allowed to cultivate one. You see all the time in clubs or communities âAfrican Festivals,â or âAfrican Dance Party,â etc. You see equivalent type cultural events for every group. Yet, thereâs some unwritten rule that white Americans cannot have activities, pastimes and events dedicated towards celebrating and cultivating their own culture, like âCelebrating the innovative white male of the west festival?â Perhaps Americans would be less anti-Immigration if we didnât have this inclusion and diversity bullshit shoved at us, where even non-citizen minorities enjoy certain affirmative action privileges that the white men, who build this country and this would for the most part, do not. which reminds me, on a side note,
I became anti immigration, when I saw illegal, bean eating, Mexican fuckers raising the Mexican flags at American schools, and marching around American streets with their flags, making demands about their rights. So disrespectful. Iâve been to their failed, shit ass, filthy, uncivilized country many times and would never even think about waiving an American flag around their country, let alone violently rant about taking back or taking over their country while at the same time begging for and demanding welfare, education and a free, fully funded life. these scum bags flood into America, live off white manâs taxes, shit up every home they move into. You can have the nicest neighborhood, and if someone sells to a Mexican family, theyâll be junked up cars on their lawn, trashed landscaping and property, and frequent police visits answering disturbing the peace charges and what not, with drunk, unknown, Mexican scum rotating in and out of the house.
Then you go to any area where Mexican neighborhoods are, and the restaurants are shit holes with large families making the white Americans feel like they arenât even in their own country, meanwhile we pay for this - we are forced to finance the downfall of our country, the loss of our contracts and spots in college, and the trashing of our environment and neighborhoods. Not good. what will happen when the White man is fazed out because we are the only group that procreates responsibly? Is there just going to be one ghetto or hood after another, where anywhere you go it is either a dangerous black neighborhood or a trashed, filthy Mexican one, or a terrorized Muslim enclave?
everyTHING YOU SAY IS SO REPULSIVE IâM GOING TO VOMIT AND THEN IâM GOING TO SCOOP UP MY VOMIT AND DUMP IT ON YOUR IGNORANT, EVIL HEAD OH MY GOD I CANNOT EVEN BREATHE
White people in a nutshell.
-m
What's going to happen to the white man? Â Nothing except maybe him finally learning to shut the fuck up for two seconds about things that don't concern him, things like, you know, running this beautiful multicultural fucking country. Too bad two and a half centuries weren't enough for you guys to figure this all out a little better. Â You should probably get over it already. Â
P.S. Â La Raza *spooky ghost noises*
