ruth bader ginsburg has died. call your senators and remind them over and over and over again of mitch mcconnell’s own rule to not replace supreme court justices in a presidential election year. call them as many times as it takes until they agree to not fill the seat until 2021. 202-224-3121
Absolutely do this for both Senators in every state.
But ESPECIALLY do this if one of your Senators is a Republican up for reelection in November and is currently close or behind in the polls for their seat. There are 7 of them:
Susan Collins in Maine (she has already said earlier this month that she wasn’t comfortable with the idea of filling any vacant Supreme Court seat before the election)
Cory Gardner in Colorado
Martha McSally in Arizona
Joni Ernst in Iowa (she said earlier this year that she would vote to fill any vacant seat, regardless of the election, so she’s a piece of shit but if she gets harassed about it and her polls look bad, who knows)
Thom Tillis in North Carolina
David Perdue in Georgia
Lindsey Graham in South Carolina (in 2018, Graham said that if a seat opened up in Trump’s last year in office, he would not vote to fill it until after the election. He’s also the chair of the Judiciary Committee, which would be the group to initially vote on sending a Supreme Court nominee to the full Senate vote. Graham is rather terrible but he is facing a tough race and has already said he wouldn’t fill the seat in an election year so, he could be pressured.)
Those 7 need all the votes they can get in their Senate races. So even though they’re garbage, they’re garbage who want to win their own elections. Which means overwhelming pressure might actually carry weight this year (but also, even if they miraculously do the right thing with this Supreme Court seat, still vote them out in November because again, they’re garbage).
Add to that list:
Lisa Murkowski (Republican from Alaska). In addition to the fact that she has a history of breaking party lines to side with Democrats (voted against Obamacare repeal in 2017 and voted “present” rather than Yes/No on Brett Kavanaugh in 2018), EARLIER TODAY (before news of RBG’s death broke), Murkowski said she would NOT vote to fill any Supreme Court vacancy before the election. So even though she’s already said she won’t fill it and she’s not up for reelection, she needs to get phone calls supporting that choice (to ensure she doesn’t buckle).
Lamar Alexander (Republican from Tennessee). He’s a moderate Republican (he voted to confirm Justice Sotomayor for Obama in 2009, which was very uncommon for Republicans) but most importantly, his term ends this year and he’s NOT running for reelection. Meaning he’s retiring. Meaning he might be more willing to do the right thing here. Call him.
Mitt Romney (Republican from Utah). Another one of the more moderate Republicans, he also has not shied away from taking stands against Trump (including voting against him in the Impeachment trial and actually showing up to a Black Lives Matter rally this summer, most notably). Mitt’s not up for reelection until 2024 and he’s probably safe in Utah forever anyway so this wouldn’t be that risky for him to do.
Rob Portman (Republican from Ohio). Again, he’s “moderate” and safe in his Senate seat for another 2 years. Worth a shot.
Joe Manchin (Democrat from West Virginia). He voted “yes” on Kavanaugh (like an asshole), so he also needs to get phone calls to ensure he refuses to fill the seat and doesn’t fall victim to his more Republican tendencies.
Realistically, all 45 Democratic Senators, both Independent Senators, and FOUR Republican Senators will need to stand up, for this to work. 51 is the magic number.
If Collins and Murkowski follow through with their statements from the last few weeks (and that’s a big “if” with Collins, who infamously changes her mind after appearing reasonable), that means only two more Republicans need to be persuaded. I listed 9 above.
Republicans generally still have no spine or morals but it’s worth a shot to call.
