@fuckyeahgalekatniss
We moved as two parts of one being.
Do you think in mockingjay 2, they portrayed gale differently then he was in the book? Personally I think in the movies they made him more (trying to find a different word, but) edgy or very distant from Katniss. And also when Katniss and him say goodbye she seemed a lot more angry and from what I remember in the book she was much more torn about her feelings, to where she wanted to forgive him. anyways point is do you have any input?
I definitely think the films portrayed Gale differently from the books. I’ve probably already been a little too vocal about how transparent Flaw was in turning Gale into this one-note soldier boy, but it just frustrated me so much. There was also a clear disconnect between Gale and Katniss throughout MJ 2 that was very jarring.
I only read Mockingjay once, and that was years ago now. I do remember that SC left it more open for interpretation. It was also made very clear that even though Katniss could never be sure whether the bomb was Gale’s design or not, that uncertainty was still too much for her. To that point, I don’t believe Katniss even got to make a real choice between Gale and Peeta, because in the end, it was made for her. I guess that could still stand to reason in the film, but I just hate that Flaw and co. misrepresented the true intention of the ending by taking such transparent liberties with Gale and villainizing him to the point of no return.
How would you have liked Gale & Gale/Katniss's story to play out/end? Also what makes you ship them/their journey? :)
Obviously, I would’ve loved them to end up together. The set up was always there. At the same time, there was something truly tragic about Gale and Katniss from the very beginning and the way they ended almost seemed fitting. I’m talking strictly about the books, mind you, because the film franchise really became an entity unto itself and Gale/Katniss’ relationship was severely mishandled.
But I digress… I guess what really makes me ship them is the fact that they were best friends. I’ve always been a sucker for two people who have grown up together, who know each other inside and out. Gale and Katniss’ situation was obviously heightened in the sense that they not only grew up as best friends, but they relied on each other to survive, to keep their families alive. That only made their bond stronger. Gale understood her better than anyone else in the world. They were two halves of a whole. So, I guess the hardest part was seeing that get slowly dismantled as the war essentially tore these two people apart.
You and I were, you and I were fire, fire, fireworks I said I’d never miss you But I guess you never know…
hi love you i don't think your navigation page links are working okaaaaay bye :)))
I’m too lazy to check or fix them right now bc I’m on my phone but I’ll post this as a reminder to myself lol... thanks for letting me know, though. <3
I just think it's sad people take this "love triangle" to be the only thing that matters so they get happy when they see the movie because they completely ruined Gale and his dynamic with Katniss to the point of no return. It's a disservice to the story. It cheapens it. The tragedy of it is that Katniss lost the one person that was there for her and her family when no one else was. She was heartbroken about it. She still missed him in the end. It's not about who won, but what she lost. Tragic.
The THG fandom is one of the most frustrating fandoms I’ve come across. The marginalization of Gale (and even Liam to an extent) was evident from day one, and the films only exacerbated it. The love triangle was a huge component of the books, and I get that people will become attached to one side or the other, but there is a huge faction of fans who feel the need to demonize Gale just for the sake of securing their own couple. :\
If I’m being honest, Mockingjay was not a well written book, and the love triangle definitely fell apart in a particularly unsatisfactory way. That being said, it was the journey along the way that made me fall in love with Gale and Katniss - and it was that journey that Flaw managed to completely butcher. Like you said, the real tragedy is that Katniss didn’t only lose her sister that day, but her best friend as well.
When they said that there would be two parts of mockingjay I hoped that they would tell us more about what happened to Gale at the end, not just 'he's in district 2'
You and me both. Flaw sucks. That’s all there is to say, really.
OMG DO YOU HAVE FOOTAGE OF THE GALENISS KISS IN ANY WAY
No, I don’t sweet, excitable anon! The best description I can give you is this: they are sitting on the bottom half of a bunk bed. There’s some talking about Peeta’s situation. Gale tells her that he wants Peeta to get better, because he knows that she can’t choose either of them until it’s a fair fight. She initiates the kiss. It seriously looks like their second kiss in CF but less pretty open fields and more of a dark bunker. Sitting side by side. Heavy with angst. Kisses. She lingers, but he pulls away. It’s good.
It's been a long time since I read the books, and I'm having a hard time remembering if there's any mention of Gale at all in the epilogue of the books or anything that alludes to her remembering him in the epilogue? Do you know? Thanks!
I don’t think so? I’m pretty sure the last mention of Gale is Katniss finding out that he’s in District 2 with a fancy new job and thinking that he’s probably kissing a pair of lips that aren’t hers... that’s somewhere near the end. I don’t think she alludes to or thinks about him at all in the epilogue. I always felt like Mockingjay, especially the last third of the book was rushed, and the way Gale just disappeared and the limited amount of information we were given about what happened to him only highlighted that fact.
I love both peeta and gale with Katniss, but gosh I wish gale and her could have had a better ending. I can't believe that was gales last scene. He was so broken and she was as you said cold and indifferent. It's not fair, all he ever wanted was to protect her and her family. He deserved to be happy. And their relationship will always be tragic and unfair to me. :(
I think because these books are from Katniss’ POV, it’s so easy to forget everything that Gale went through. He had the burden of feeding and keeping alive two families during the first games and basically saving his entire district during the second games. He saw things that no boy of 18 should, all the while knowing his best friend - his other half - was off, god knows where, fighting for her life.
And what pissed me off the most was that Flaw gave so much screen time to Peeta’s pain from the Capitol torturing, and what he went through and how that affected him and how lost Katniss was without him. Meanwhile, Gale’s horrific experiences are reduced to a 30 second monologue in Part 1, and about a minute of dialogue in Part 2 that is basically setting him up as a “cold-hearted soldier” anyway.
I will say that Gale and Katniss have always been tragic, it’s one of the things that makes me feel so much for them... their story really can’t end any other way for me... but the way Flaw chose to get them there was not true to the characters or the story.
Hi , I wanted to say I am obsessed with your blog. I love Gale and Katniss so much ever since I read the books and I think Liam and Jen have incredible chemistry. Thank s:)
Aw, you’re welcome! :) Liam and Jen do have great chem… which makes it even more annoying that Flaw refused to let them showcase it to its fullest potential.
hey I saw you mentioned Gary Francis is your post about about the movie and you seem to have liked him. He only did the first film or was it catching fire as well? Do you think Mockingjay would have been different if he had stayed?? Btw I love you blog. I check it every day :)
Gary understood Gale as a multi-faceted character. He didn’t just relegate him to an angry soldier with zero compassion. He appreciated how protective Gale was for all those he loved, how passionate he could be, how deep his connection with Katniss really ran and how much they relied on each other. I think he would’ve given a lot more POV to Gale and why he wanted to fight in this war so badly and why he hated the Capitol so much. I also think Gary was a huge component in helping Liam understand Gale’s motivations and the complex dynamic between Gale/Katniss, especially in the last book. Flaw managed to erode that away and I saw a huge difference in how Liam talked about Gale in the last two press tours vs during the first two. I can’t say definitively whether Mockingjay would’ve been different if Gary would’ve stayed… but I think we would’ve gotten an infinitely more interesting and honest portrayal of Gale Hawthorne.
I resent the end of the movie, she didn't choose Peeta, the choice was made for her. She didn't end things with Gale in the books, he never came back to her because he wasn't sure if he was responsible for the death of her sister and that was even years later in the Epilogue showed us that she still care for him and was bitter that he was able to build a life in district 2 without her. They made him some kind of pet of District 13, he saw her because he was ordered to tell her to see Coin.
I couldn’t agree more. The ending in the books was far more - I guess you could say - open for interpretation. Flaw made it the complete opposite. He literally went out of his way to make Gale the bad guy, and tried to ruin everything sacred between Gale/Katniss. Their last scene was absolute trash, and like you, I hated the fact that Gale had only come to see her because he was ordered to. It’s just a real shame that Flaw could never appreciate what Gale and Katniss truly meant to each other and give at least some sort of gravitas to the monumental loss Katniss would feel for the rest of her life from losing her best friend. Like I said in my previous post, I really think Jen managed to slip some of that emotion in right at the end while Peeta was reading the letter, but other than that? There was little I could grasp onto in the film and say that I liked, or believed as a true representation of Gale and the Gale/Katniss relationship.
Mockingjay Part 2, Beijing Photocall. (Nov 13, 2015)
Ooh was the smooch long 😏
Haha, it wasn’t thaaaat long but I still enjoyed it. It actually reminded me of their kiss in the fields right before she went off to the games again. In terms of length and even their body placements. But there was this lingering moment when they broke apart and it looked like she wanted to keep the kiss going but he kind of pulled away. sigh.
are there any other good galeniss moments besides that one moment you mentioned? i am supposed to see the film next week and i want to prepare myself.
Honestly, there seemed to be a real disconnect between Gale/Katniss throughout the entire film. There were a few nice moments, but nothing that really stood out, unfortunately. Flaw was clearly trying to drill it into the audience that Gale = bad, Peeta = good. He was not subtle about it.
It’s not all total crap, though. I mean, if I didn’t care about Gale (and Gale/Katniss) so much, then objectively, it’s a solid film. The sewer sequence is amazing, and the Finnick/Annie wedding was very sweet.
Hot new couple alert! Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth will reportedly take their romance off screen after promoting The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2.
