“Sam,” Bucky says, shoulders tight. “I need you to say what you wanted to say yesterday. I need you to say it. All of it.” He ducks his head, giving it a slight shake. “I need to hear it. I need this—I need to know, alright?”

Bucky’s eyes are a beautiful blue glow in the early rays. Sam lets out a shaky sigh, a defeated, soft laugh. 

“Had it all planned out yesterday, you know? Gone and lost the nerve now,” he says, raw and honest, more so than he’s ever been, closer than he’s ever been to admitting this.

“Sam, it’s different now. Look, I know what I told you back then, but this is different. You think I didn’t see the way he always looked at you?” Sarah smiles suddenly, licking her lips in the way she does when she’s trying to hide it. “The way he’s looking at you right now.” 

Sam’s neck flushes hot. He can’t help but look, and when he does, Bucky whips his head away.

“I wasn’t gonna let you ruin your life. Because that’s what would have happened if you kept on the way you were keeping on. Sam, but I know what love looks like. It was love then, and it’s love now.”

“I, uh,” he says, closing his eyes tightly. His tongue sticks to the roof of his mouth. “I just need to—I need to shower.” He rubs his hands together, feels at his neck, feels the dried blood crumb against his skin. “I need to get this off. Need to get this off me.”

He shakes so violently he feels weightless, floating. Feels like he’s vibrating above the ground in utter terror because the more time passes, the more reality sets in. His husband is dead.

In the mornings, after coffee, he goes for a run all around the lake and back. He cooks dinner most nights and later watches the news with Sarah and Cassius on the porch while sipping on ice-cold beers.

One such night, early 2011, news breaks that Captain America has been found alive under the ice in the Arctic.

"Huh," Sarah says. "Ain't that a thing."

And Sam thinks, what a goddamn miracle for someone to come back from the dead like that, what a tragedy that all Steve Rogers had once known is now long gone.

It’s about as cool as it gets in Louisiana most days—a brisk fifty-two—and Sam’s bundled up like he’s back in Washington, DC in the middle of January. 

All those years away from home, and he still never had managed to get used to the cold.

Bucky’s only in a slightly thicker leather jacket, lined with some kind of fleece, mostly because the boys had warned him to bundle up. Bucky’s sweating now, but Sam knows their earnestness in trying to keep him warm means he’ll keep the jacket on all night, the sheer amount of heat his body puts off like a furnace be damned. 

It’s become a nightly routine, these walks, first starting during warm, wet, and hazy summer nights and continuing on even now, when the sun dips past the horizon entirely too early each afternoon. They never stray far from home, walk mostly in laps near the house, but tonight, Sam takes Bucky’s hand and leads them out a little farther. 

The Christmas lights are out on all the houses Sam knows are going to put them up, and he’s feeling a little nostalgic.

Hi Sam Wilson nation, this is a bit last minute but a few of us have decided to get together to make samtember2022 happen. YAY!!!🎉

The fan event will be running from Thursday, September 1st to Friday, September 30th and it is meant to be a celebration for Sam Wilson’s birth-month✨

Given the late notification, the prompt for tomorrow will be free choice, while we are still figuring out the prompts.
