Marvel Comics Meme: Characters [5/10] ā³Ā Mary Jane Watson
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 arrives in a mere three months, but it feels like the web-swinging reboot-sequel keeps expanding its cast every day. Just yesterday,ā¦
"Consider this: We now live in an era when Mary Jane Watson canāt make it into a Spider-Man movie, but Alistair Smythe can.ā

Mary Jane Watson (particularly her movie incarnation) - Flawed? Yes. Broken? Yes. Called a bitch by fandom? Yes.Ā
Amazing? So much yes.
Amazing Spider-Man annual #19
The issue written by Louise Simonson and drawn by Mary Wilshire, and while MJ never gets into a Spider costume as teased on the cover, it is nice to see MJ as a the star in an action-oriented book produced by two women. MJ is a captive of Alistair (along with her aunt) for most of the issue, but she still manages to stay level headed, delaying him and doing what she can to attract the attention of Spider-Man and/or the police.āSuperMegaMonkey

In this comic adaptation of āSpider-Man 2ā ā a cinematic adaptation of, well, a comic ā Mary Jane Watson calls off her wedding to John Jameson and arrives at Peter Parkerās doorstep in her wedding dress, just like in the movie.
However, unlike the film, she says her famous line (or a variation of it) from the end of Amazing Spider-Man #42. You know which one.
Spider-Man 2: The Official Comic Adaptation. 2004. Written by Roberto Aguirre Sacasa. Pencils by Staz Johnson, Ron Lim, and Pat Olliffe.
PETER (narration): Which is why a few days later, while Mary Janeās getting married across town, Iām in my apartment, finishing up some extra-credit for Dr. Connors.
[Knock knock]
PETER: Come in, Mr. Ditkovich.
MARY JANE: [off-panel] If you think Iām your landlord, Peter, then believe me when I say ⦠[appears at Peterās door-step in her wedding dress] ⦠you just hit the jackpot, tiger.

Nineties comics fashion never gets old.
Thank you so much for running this blog! I enjoy every post and your commentary is always amazing. Thanks for giving me hope for ladies in comics!
Glad to be of service. :)
New York is overrun by demons, Mary Jane has a daring plan, and Peter has exquisitely unfortunate timing. Oh, and there's this guy named Hal who repeats himself a lot.
MJ: Come on, guys, break those pipes.
HAL: What now, MJ? MJ: Hold off the slime stuff with the camera flash until we get out of this tunnel, Hal. HAL: Yeah, and then? MJ: Then with luck the tunnel will fill up with gas pretty quick. HAL:Ā Yeah, andĀ then? MJ: Then I'll set fire to this scrap of cloth from my dress. HAL:Ā Yeah, andĀ then? MJ:Ā And then I'll toss it back in the tunnel and we'll allĀ duck for--Ā Omigosh!
[Spider-Man and Hobgoblin tumble out of another tunnel, mid-brawl.] HOBGOBLIN:Ā My demonic powers make me stronger than you, Spider-Man! You're as good as dead! MJ:Ā NO! [She throws her improvised match at Hobgoblin.] SPIDEY: [in thoughts] Mary Jane? HOBGOBLIN: My cape! Stupid woman, you set me on fire! SPIDEY: Good thinking, lady! That distraction helped me break Hobby's grip! Let's give him a chance to cool off... [He throws Hobgoblin down the same tunnel MJ was setting to blow.]
MJ: No! The tunnel's full of gas! SPIDEY: Gas? Uh- SFX:Ā *THAWA WHOOM* SPIDEY: --oh!

AUNT MAY: You should be ashamed of yourself, young man. I havenāt a very high opinion of Spider-Man⦠but at least he has manners. SCORPION: Why, you oldā AUNT MAY: Watch your tongue, or Iāll slap your face!
I donāt understand people who think that Aunt May is boring. Really, truly donāt understand.

MARVELOUS MARVEL LADIES MONTH: Mary Jane Watson
alright youāve seen the raimi spider-man movies and you know about mj and her wanting to be an actress and that sheās married to spider-man, and you probably know the āface it, tigerā you just hit the jackpot!ā panel. Ā aside from that, itās probably a little spotty, right? Ā iām going to do my best to give you a relatively brief and painless intro to her. Ā

After being completely forgotten by Peter when Gwenās clone appeared and being ditched by him several times since, MJ starts seeing Flash to show that sheās not hurt (even though she is) and Peter gets upset and demands a conversation. It ends up being one of the deepest, most honest ones theyāve ever had.
Peter: Glad you could make it, Mary Jane. Mary Jane: I didnāt have anything else to do, tiger. Peter: What, no heavy date with Flash Thompson? Amazing! Mary Jane: Peter, that was really cruel! Flash told me that you two had talked ā and he told me a few other things ā not all of them very polite! It took more courage than I thought I had to even show up here tonight. Peter: He tore into you that badly, huh? I wish I could be more sympathetic, redā- but what did you expect when you started playing games with peopleās emotions? Mary Jane: I never thought of it as a game, Petey ā not really. Peter: Then what did you think you were doing, lady ā besides churning up my guts? Mary Jane: I⦠I just donāt know. Peter: You donāt know a lot of things, do you, MJ? But then⦠neither do I, I guess. What are we these days, red? Who are we? Mary Jane: I honestly canāt tell you, Petey. It started out so simply between us, tiger. You had lost Gwen Stacy and you needed a friend⦠Someone to lean on. But then you kissed me goodbye when you went to Paris⦠And suddenly you were something more! I suppose I just didnāt know how to handle a relationship like that, Peter. All my life I had been happy-go-lucky Mary Jane Watson, queen of the swinging set⦠No strings⦠No obligations⦠No responsibilities⦠I didnāt take anything from anybody that they didnāt offer me first. Peter: But thatās just the point, MJ ā You really didnāt give anything to anyone either! Mary Jane: So what do we do now, Peter? Where do we go from here? I look around and see all our friends getting together⦠Ned Leeds and Betty Brant married⦠Harry Osborn and Liz Allan starry eyed⦠And you keep running out on me to take your precious photos! So I get possessive and I hate myself ā and I hate you for making me hate myself⦠And all we do is go around in bigger and bigger circles! Peter: Yāknow, MJ, maybe weād be better off if we let things ride for a while⦠Let water find its own level and all that. Mary Jane: Yeah, tiger⦠Maybe we would. Peter: Psssst⦠Hey, red⦠no matter what finally happens, Iām glad we had this little chat. For the first time in months, it seems like I can see a light at the end of the tunnel. Mary Jane: Yeah, handsome⦠So can I. Amazing Spider-Man #165
