Cities in Blight, by Dathon / Lie Low

5 track album

Here is the culmination of three months worth of long-distance improvisation with my good friend Dathon. The entire EP is a bleak look at the changing landscape of the cities we each live in, most notably the effects of gentrification. 41 minutes of pure duo guitar improvisation that borders on noise, jazz, and ambient. This was just released on Meat for the Machines, a digital label out of Chicago. There is also a limited edition cassette available via the bandcamp if you are into having a physical copy of things.

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted anything here. Well... it’s about time... and I’ll start off big, okay? Since February I have been doing some long-distance improvising with a friend in Chicago (his solo project is called Dathon, if you want to check it out). The result of these improvisations is a five song EP titled “cities in blight.” The video attached is a sample song off of the EP called “runoff.” It is a bleak, but interesting, sonic journey that brings to mind images of the ever changing landscape of the cities we all know and love. Many of the tracks, in fact, were influenced (at least in part) by the gentrification we have both been witness to in our respective cities. Arabi Shakes, by Emperor Sumo

Hey folks! My improvisational noise duo, now called Emperor Sumo (instead of Gathered/Gathering), has just released our first official EP, Arabi Shakes. Four tracks of subconscious musical exploration recorded live to digital 8 track in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Please give it a listen. It’s a FREE download. But, if you really like it, please consider paying a couple bucks for it to help us offset the costs associated with recording our next piece, a full length which will be our first major release.

The first look at the now completed prototype Giant Leap: Command Module Double Delay Unit! Two separate (and different) modulated delay circuits run one after another, one with tap tempo... and many more features! After spending about 30 minutes with this thing last night... I can say the options are pretty much limitless. Very pleased with this thing!

Two Giant Leap Modulated Tape Echo Style Delays done this weekend -- one for myself (finally) and one for a customer. One more standard Giant Leap to go... and then I start working on the Giant Leap: Command Module, which will be a standard Giant Leap running into another tape echo style delay with tap tempo, a footswitch to put the feedback on max, and modulation. it's going to be like 11 knobs, 5 toggles, and 4 footswitches. It's really going to look like dashboard of the lunar lander or something.

Awesome.

I love NOLA - the music, the food, the architecture - but one of my hesitations when I think of moving there is the lack of a noisy/heavy/experimental music scene. Good to know that I might be wrong.

While I can't say that the experimental scene is necessarily booming or anything... it does exist. More so, in fact, that I thought it was when I first got here. There are noise/experimental shows almost every single week... and that includes straight noise, experimental, noise rock, guitar driven free jazz, etc. There are a lot of different sounds coming out of New Orleans right now... and there is a lot to really dig into!

AND... I think it's only really starting to grow. More venues are beginning to allow for a steady weekly improv/experimental showcase. We've got a Monday, a Tuesday, and a Wednesday night now, all at different venues around the city. 

I've been in NOLA for almost a year now... and while I can easily find things to hate about the city... I love this place. Food, architecture, music, and a collective zero fucks given/weird as you want to be mentality makes it the best place I've ever called home.
