BBC Merlin is insane as a show. Its an adaptation of Arthurian mythos. It's inspired by CW's Smallville (this is 100% real look it up). it stars 4 unknown 20 somethings and British acting legends. It's aimed at kids and families. its a tragedy. Its campy as hell. It will make you cry. It asks you, like Merlin, to believe in the Golden age of Camelot. It never shows you that Golden age. Everyone in the show is the most beautiful person you'll ever see. people will clown on the CGI. Its one of the most homerotic shows of the 2000's. Its an on purpose allegory for queerphobia, but those allegorious queer characters are largely villains. If you watched it when you were 12 you will never quite be able to let it go. This is a curse. This is an experience you wouldn't give up for the world.

Totally agree that this whole Rookie collab has been blown out of proportion, but it's also a misrepresentation of people's concerns to say that everyone's just suddenly decided all cop shows are bad without any further thought.

This cop show in particular has direct ties to the LAPD. Plenty has been said before about the way the show attempts to rehabilitate the image of policing through the "a few bad eggs" narrative.

Just some context for you. As I said, I think you're correct that people are massively overreacting. But people's disappointment isn't totally baseless either.

I will absolutely admit I haven’t seen The Rookie save for a few scenes when Watcher guest starred, so i definitely hear your point. I think you can be critical of shows like that, also enjoy other “cop” shows, see that this is a left field decision, and believe the reaction is over the top.

Yknow I think I’m a little lost as well, but I think I can point you in the right direction.

The main article people are referring to is the recent Variety article, I’ve linked it at the bottom of this post.

From my understanding of the general situation, ABC’s show The Rookie is crossing over with Game Changer for an episode coming out relatively soon. The Rookie is apparently funded by the LAPD, which I didn’t know but makes sense. This is actually not the first time this tv show has done an internet crossover, there was one with Ryan and Shane from Watcher (and I don’t believe I ever encountered this volume of hate when that episode aired which is interesting to me). There was some unfortunate timing as they just sold out of merch that featured Brennans “laws are threats” speech from Fantasy High.

This along with general understandings of Dropout and Sam Reich’s political standings has led to a massive out cry from a pretty large section of the fanbase. Honestly, everything from hypocrisy to money grabbing to abandoning fans for mainstream to not having trans femme representation has been called out, it’s all very varied and I have my personal thoughts on the matter which I expressed some of on a post earlier today.

I truly understand people are upset, but I think it is misplaced anger, and people are now placing that anger in my inboxes, but honestly I think it’s funny that people respond to something they don’t agree with like that, so I’m all chill over here.

Hopefully lukewarm take but given the state of the internet I doubt it, i don’t get why everyone is so pressed about the Rookie x Dropout crossover.

Before I say anything, none of you have seen the episode, so you have no idea what it’s about or how they include either show into their respective lores, this could very well be a game changer bit I wouldn’t put it past Sam

But maybe I missed the part where everyone in the world decided cop shows are inherently evil and any interaction with them makes the person automatically disgraced, and everyone starts declaring “I never liked them anyway” and “why would they do this to us”. If that’s the battle you want to wage, I feel like it’s possible to put that energy towards the multiple other mainstream cop shows rather than a relatively smaller media company still trying to get their name in that same mainstream

I fear there’s a sense of nuance that is missing and the performative shit coming from a section of the fan base especially on here is concerning me. I hate to say this in this political climate but not everything (SPECIFICALLY RELATED TO THIS SITUATION) is an attack on you. Sam Reich doesn’t know you or your preferences, he’s gonna make content that makes him money first cause Dropout is a company first. A good company yes, we like them a lot, but if you all are just now coming to the realization that the company Dropout isn’t your best friend that caters to you and your ideals only, then there are some parasocial tendencies you might want to address.

Reading the reactions to the announcement actually make me want to puke and I’m tired of people virtue signaling and cancelling over normal shit that they blow way out of proportion

Genuinely BEGGING anyone who loves Dimension 20's A Court of Fey and Flowers season to get into Bards of New York's current show, Gilded Thrones.

Instead of DND, they mixed good society mechanics with kids on bikes and some extra homebrew to make a VERY smooth game. While I will accept NO Aabria Iyengar slander in this house, I think we can all admit there were times where the good society and dnd mechanics and vibes seemed to be fighting each other a little bit. This is NOTHING against that cast or creative team surrounding that season, I just think it's the truth. But Bards have really developed on the idea to make something special.

You like romance? Boy do we have many options for you! U haul lesbians, seemingly doomed pining, we've got it all.

You want political intrigue? OH BOY DO WE HAVE IT! Nation against nation, all striving for the same goal in different ways, attempting to unravel ancient history they don't understand.

You want fey vibes? BABY YOU HAVE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE!! While our cast are not fey themselves, Arcadia is a land full of magic and most of our pcs have very different manifestations of it!

You want combat? We have it, but it's different. Arcadia is a world where you don't solve your problems merely by fighting. Combat rules were used in the Mage's Duel (which is an incredible batch of episodes and often referred to as the soft magic olympics) but nobody was aiming to kill and that's not really how this game is structured.

You want INCREDIBLE HEARTWRENCHING PERFORMANCES???????

HELL YEAH!!!! With a table full of mostly trained theatre professionals and the implementation of the monologue tokens, used to get a peek inside a character's head that anybody can play at any time, the Bards are here to stomp on your heart all day long!

This is my impassioned plea for y'all to give Bards a chance, because this is currently their ongoing campaign and can be watched, TOTALLY FOR FREE, on their youtube channel!!! If you decide to get really invested in the Bards, check out the Regolus: Dark Age campaign to watch guest of the century Aabria Iyengar herself play one of THE pcs of all time.
