Love Like You (Who is Being Sung To)

Any Stephen Universe fan knows the ending title song “Love Like You” by now. Many fan theories have sprung up about who is singing to whom: Pearl to Rose being a famous one.

However, I wanted to add that the song, along with the whole series, is dedicated to Rebeca Sugar’s brother Steven Sugar (yes, the person Steven is based on). In countless interviews she mentions this fact along with the amazement she has for her brother’s unconditional love and support (”I could even learn how to love, like you”). So, the truth is that this is Rebeca singing to IRL Steven.

But wait! It gets more fun. Rebeca Sugar has also mentioned that Peal and Amethyst are each parts of herself she had growing up with IRL Steven (Garnet being the cool she could never be). Additionally, both Steven and Rose are representations of IRL Steven. Hence, other fan theories of the song being Pearl singing to Rose are still true symbolically speaking!

Anyway, I love relating artists real lives to their work and it really makes a difference in this example.
