#tfw you meet a guy who wont stop talking like a pbs kids presenter and it turns out hes in charge of the nukes round here (@startingatmidnight)
weight of the world.
⦠PROJECT HAIL MARYĀ byĀ andy weir āin the style of a 70s sci-fi novel.
she's platonic about it but in my opinion, stratt 100% treats grace as her dead wife. she keeps a tacky fox trinket in her coat pocket. there's a framed photo of him in her study . he's grinning goofily in it (bc he's a dork). new guy like: is that her husband? / no, dumbass, it's dr. ryland grace, 1/3 of the hail mary mission. / oh, fuck. were they... ? / yeah, it's unclear. black-and-white montages of grace messing around in high-level meetings play every time stratt contemplates committing more environmental crimes. she looks up at the night sky and vaguely wonders if he's enjoying his space ramen. that's her dead wife. she killed him.
glad to see we're all on the same page
rocky fix.
a friendship so epic that it saved stars
hey don't worry? completely unrelated giant dump of heartwarming PHM doodles ok??
once again these are all from like the same two canvas files in procreate judging from the same color background. also straight up had a dream where grace and rocky figured out how to make gnocchi out of taumoeba hence the making gnocchi over a bunsen burner
waiter, waiter! one me burger with a side of awesome sauce! five stars!
Sacrifice for human kind
furthest we've ever been
I like to think that Grace's house in the biodome eventually becomes the Earth's embassy on Erid :)
The reunion scene in the PHM movie is amazing and makes me cry every time, but I think everyone should know that in the book Grace:
did a bunch of complex maths combined with a long and kinda inefficient scanning the space with his petrovascope to find Rocky; reacted to success with a fist-pump and a "yes! I'm definitely going to die!! :D". yes, this is a direct quote.
"all I see when I close my eyes is Rockyās dumb carapace and his little arms always fidgeting with something."
briefly questioned himself on putting so much effort into something that is going to kill him, then promptly dismissed that and rushed to (the thing that he wasn't even sure was) Rocky's ship.
"whenever I think about my impending death, I think about Rocky instead."
spent nine hours cleaning up on the way there because hey, he's going to have a guest again!!
briefly panicked about the possibility that Rocky might be dead; immediately rejected the thought with a "nah, he's too smart for that".
jumped towards the Blip-A way too hard and slammed into it so badly he couldn't grip onto anything and started to float away.
tried to catch onto the ship by yeeting a lasso made of his tether at some kind of antenna.
NAILED IT ON THE FIRST TRY.
was so excited for Rocky to set up the airlock tunnel again that Rocky had to remind him to go back to Hail Mary unless he wants to look at the tunnel from outside.
Like. my guy was stoked.
thinking about how the Book!Hail Mary has about 15 meter+ sized holes cut in the hull. Grace plasmacut a man-sized hole in literally every single fuel tank. Rocky bust a hole in the side to connect his own tunnel to the Blip-A. Grace cut a chunk out so Rocky knew what his ship was made out of. If the Hail Mary ever made it home I genuinely think anyone left alive who was part of the construction would have an anyeurism.
#convinced the hail mary is held together with the equivalent of eridian flex seal#its literally two liquids in the book#to showcase the power of xenonite#i sawed this spaceship in half!
Ryland thinking Rocky is happy with being back on Erid vs Rocky putting on a brave face because he has to give 20+ eulogies and he's desperately trying to prevent one more by keeping Grace alive.
ky should be thrilled to be back home#but the horror of it all can finally hit him in the safety of his home#20+ eridian families waiting for them to return and all that's left is rocky#i think ryland and adrian both can tell that something deeply shifts in rocky after returning home#he's no longer running on fumes just trying to stay alive in space#people praise rocky as a hero. and he knows he's brave for going and doing it. doesnt change the fact he feels horrible.#rocky coming back from his fifteenth eulogy and seeing grace has barely moved cause he doesnt have the energy#and so hes trying not get anticipatory grief but its hard. thats why he works madly at finding a solution.#i love you rocky sorry buddy
I truly truly truly think that Grace would have gone voluntarily.
If only Stratt had let him go, let him walk out of that room, let him cross the threshold. Given him time to let it sink in.
Grace, or Book!Grace at least, didn't last a full day back to his normal life after his first foray with the astrophage. He didn't manage to get through five minutes of his class. He stumbled out of his classroom, had a panic attack and ran right back to Stratt.
His kids were going to die.
If they would have given him just a bit more time, just a little more, I'm dead certain he would have turned around. He would have gone willingly to die.
But that's the whole point. They didn't have the time. Time had been running out before they even noticed.
if the airlock (or just any of this) looks inaccurate, excuse me, Iām an idiot
warning: blood, and Grace frying the ever-loving heck out of his arm
