Steps to return to Gaza through Rafah Crossing

1. On Egyptian side, your bags are searched, passport stamped, and then you proceed through the crossing.

2. Once through, you find Rafah completely razed. Paths are sandy with fences on either side. Armed militia take your passport and phone. You are instructed to leave your belongings outside and brought to wait in a makeshift room lined with plastic sheeting.

3. An Israeli soldier forces you to face the wall. Your wrists are bound by handcuffs. The soldier blindfolds you and leads you through winding corridors to an interrogation room.

4. In the interrogation room, you are told “Gaza is ours — if not today, then in twenty years, in thirty years. We own Gaza now. Not a single Palestinian will remain. You will all leave, and it will belong to us.”

You are asked why you want to return to Gaza. You are asked what you did on October 7, and where all of your family members were. You are interrogated about every person connected with you, and whether they have worked for Hamas. The same question is repeated over and over and over. You are accused of lying. The soldier bangs on the table, berates and insults you.

Another soldier enters feigning concern and presents you with one of two "generous offers." They might offer to secure you and your family a job and home if you all leave Gaza and never return. Or, they might offer to recruit you as an informant for the Israeli military.

If you refuse these "offers," the other soldier returns to inflict verbal abuse and torture. If you are cold, they remove some of your clothes and spray you with water. If you recently had surgery, they kick you repeatedly on your surgical site until you're unconscious.

5. Eventually you are led out of the interrogation room and handed over to Red Crescent. You are led to a bus and transported home to Gaza.

My friend Mahmoud has been separated from his family for years, waiting for Rafah Crossing to open. Return is only permitted for 50 people per day, and there are thousands of people waiting.

He misses his family so dearly, but he is terrified to go through Rafah Crossing because everyone who has already returned to Gaza reports stories of being beaten, tortured, and humiliated. Yesterday he told me, "I swear it's the hardest thing imaginable; they torture us in every way and every form."

She was his caregiver while he had dementia and she was obviously not able to work very much while taking care of him.

He passed away recently and the family is struggling to cover the funeral costs since they were already on the verge of homelessness. They shouldn't have to worry about money on top of grieving. My friend also lost her son a couple of years ago and I know how badly that affected her mental health. Please donate if you can, even just a small amount helps a lot. you guys remember when I said white people didn't care about any of this until it started impacting them and that they would continue not to care until things like this happened and everyone was in my notes ripping me apart saying they Always cared. it is just crazy to me that as tragic as these deaths are and that we should be talking about them ICE has been doing this to latinos and native americans since their inception and this has never been seen as astonishing and shocking as this when it absolutely should've been.
