there are many reasons that I prefer fma 2003 over brotherhood (beginning with I watched it first and ending with it's more similar to the type of stories I prefer) but one thing that interests me so much is how it just smacks you in the face with how 'monsters' are just people, people that you like even, and you have to find a way to settle that within yourself. Of the two examples that spring to mind, only one is actually in the show. Having it have been Roy Mustang who killed Winry's parents is inspired. The audience is, ultimately, supposed to like him. We know he did horrible things in Ishval but we can put that aside-those are faceless people and we see Mustang try to make up for it and we see him be a person, we are more likely to be sympathetic . But Winry, we know and care about, we know how her parent's death affected her. And she's right there with us, she likes Roy despite herself, and needs to find a way to reconcile him and the monster she imagined. Even more striking, though, is the Conqueror of Shamballa movie, where Hughes is strait up a nazi. And you have to realize, he always was. He worked for a genocidal regime, even if we can look past that because its fictional and he's so nice and overfriendly. And you have to come to terms with that you liked a nazi--because of course you would. Monsters aren't real, truly awful things are done by people who love their families, laugh with friends, help out kids they don't know. Is it ok to like them, they are just characters? But then in the real world, is it still ok? That's something you have to decide. There are a lot of reasons people do bad things, and some people are almost certainly worse than others, but we can't forget that they are just people. We imagine there is a clear line, we would never like someone who could do bad things, but that's not true.
