It’s heartbreaking that she deems herself almost unworthy of happiness because she’s been slighted by so many people in such a short period of time.
All she ever does is help other people and any time she allows herself to be selfish (which if you ask ANY therapist who deals with people pleasers, they will tell you that being selfish “for once” is highly encouraged [in healthy ways obviously]) people come after her or something out of her control goes wrong and somehow she’s the one responsible or to blame because she allowed herself a tiny sliver of happiness.

Wanted to give Adrien a special birthday gift to show her care for him? Nathalie removes the letter stating it’s from her.
Wanted to give Adrien a Valentine? Everything else going on that day distracted her from signing it.
Wanted to give Adrien a gift for his 5th names day? She gets turned away by Nathalie and uses her powers to leave it for him in his room and ensures she signs it, leading to him discovering her identity, Hawkmoth discovering Chat Noir’s identity, Chat Noir getting akumatized because of his father’s actions and then destroying the world in a fit of confusion and anger. Traumatizing her after she has to confront and him in a differing timeline and give up getting credit for another gift she’d given him to prevent it.
Wanted to finally confide in someone she trusts that literally couldn’t be Chat because she feared the possibility of another Chat Blanc situation? Alya gets targeted and Marinette has to keep Chat away so he doesn’t accidentally blow her cover, angering him.
Wanted to keep Alya on the team so she had backup for every scenario possible to protect her and the other hero’s identities? Alya tells Nino who tells Adrien who gets upset at Ladybug. This also leads to Alya, while saved from Strike Back by Nino, getting her cover blown, leading her to have to give up her Miraculous causing Marinette to return it to her yo-yo where it gets stolen by Felix.
Needed an ally that wasn’t influenced by Risk to help her with her plan to deakumatize him? Felix tricks her into believing he’s Adrien.
Wanted to confess her feelings to Adrien before he left? Every chance she gets, someone gets in the way and when she has a good opportunity, she consoles him instead of confessing because she recognized he needed support.
Marinette has barely (if ever) had things go her way when putting herself first. She’s literally 14. Not an adult who has a fully developed brain that can manage stress and more responsibilities better. She’s never not taken responsibility for things when they go wrong. She admits her faults. She takes blame when she shouldn’t have to. She should be allowed to make mistakes.
She’s human. No one, not even the people who criticize her, could EVER handle the kinds of things she does and not slip up once in a while. She deserves to be selfish and love a boy who’s done so much for and with her. I’m still learning new things about my husband EVERY DAY. We’ve known each other almost 10 years now. Real love is accepting that you can’t possibly know everything about a person. Real love is accepting that sometimes you or your partner or going to be different than the other expected. People grow and change all the time. It’s a part of life.
Marinette Dupain-Cheng deserves to be unabashedly and irrevocably in love with Adrien Agreste and not suffer because of circumstances beyond her control making her feel like she can’t love him. End of story.
